This morning was strange though - there are still traffic lights on East Dulwich Grove but there was much less queueing traffic this morning than normal - only a few cars by the lights - perhaps I was a little earlier than usual and it doesn't back up until 8:30 but its the first day in weeks it hasn't been queueing back to Melbourne Grove and beyond.

Play Streets - interested in setting one up on your road?
goldilocks replied to bels123's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Play streets = limited frequency residential street closures. Not related to schools. Usually monthly / quarterly or similar. Groups of residents getting together to close the streets for their children to play out for a few hours. Lovely way of meeting up with neighbours and increasing community involvement. School streets - Bessemer is the first one in Southwark. Limited hours closure of a street for the hour around school starting and ending. Street open at all other times. Intended to reduce pollution and risk of accident at drop off and pick up. Notice these are still being mixed up so thought it might be worth clarifying. The OP here is about Play streets - so the first one. Nothing to do with schools! -
You have thought that, but it?s strange how the tailbacks coincided exactly with the closure of the champion hill / grove junction isn?t it? charter East Dulwich opened after Christmas so the timing doesn?t line up! Is there any more we can do about dog poo?
goldilocks replied to aandl's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oblivious owners is a massive issue in the parks but think on the pavements it?s more that people are choosing not to pick up. Reporting to the council is key. Particularly bad when it?s on grove vale and it gets trodden everywhere by people heading to the station. -
James - there have been various roadworks along ED Grove for months now - these particular ones may have started on the 24th but over recent months there have been many traffic light controlled roadworks on this stretch (as you'd expect with the school and health centre works). The point of my clarification earlier was that for the first week of the Champion Grove trial there were no roadworks on ED grove and the tailbacks were longer than when there were (pre trial). Obviously roadworks exacerbate the problem, but it doesn't detract that in making changes to the traffic flows around champion hill /Dog Kennel hill, traffic has built up unacceptably along East Dulwich Grove. Whilst this was always a busy route, the queueing is now excessive along a route with 3 separate schools and a route to many more!

Nope, not in the slightest. I think that having and maintaining carparks comes with a cost and the council have decided to charge for this. My point was more about the alarmist 'local people will be locked in their houses' response to this. Yes, its a charge for something that was previously free which is annoying, but its not something people 'have' to pay - there are other alternatives.
-
If you are local, your children are school age and have no disabilities, then driving to the park really shouldn't be something you'd consider. We really all need to be trying to use our cars less. There are occasions where the benefits of using the car will be greater, but driving children to a playground doesn't seem to be one of them - even just when you take account of the pollution your own children are exposed to in car journeys in congested areas, and before you take account of the impact on others as a result of that journey. I know that no one wants to hear that their behaviours aren't sustainable but trying to claim that not allowing driving to parks will 'trap families indoors' is just alarmist. The options available to you will be to travel there in different ways, or carry on as you were, for which the cost will now be ?2 per hour to park.

Is there are summary anywhere of the key points for SE22 and immediate vicinity re City, like there has been for the Heathrow consultation, in terms of the factors that lead to more planes flying over our airspace that could be referenced in our comments please?
-
Also - the roadworks don't 'long predate' the trial - they're sporadic - there may be an order for the whole period, but they're not always there. There was a week or so with none before half term. We travel along this route every day (though try to avoid walking along the main road for obvious reasons!)
-
James - just to clarify there are some roadworks this week, but there weren't the week before half term and the tailbacks were just as bad. There has been a significant step change in the level of queueing traffic ever since the champion Grove closure has been implemented. Whilst it seems a large diversion - there are only so many routes available to Herne Hill and beyond given the playing fields between the top of Dog Kennel Hill and ED Grove so its not implausible that this change is caused by the road closure.

June 3rd will be the last day of The Palmerston

I think that Jamie owns the freehold but entered into a long lease (lets call this the primary lease) with Enterprise Inns. EI agreed to grant a sub lease for a term back to Jamie to run the pub. This secondary lease has now expired, but the primary lease is still running and during the time of that primary lease, EI 'control' the pub. The situation is made more complex with beer ties in terms of whether its more economically viable for EI to sub let to a different tenant. This might not be the whole story, but thought it might help! -
They have permission to turn the upstairs into hotel type rooms rather than a hostel.

Jolie a pied is closing. Think it was Mr Simms but can?t really remember. Wasn?t excited about it so stopped paying attention.
-
If its the shop that was 'jolie a pied' its going to be a sweet shop - can't remember the name but its a franchise in a chain of retro sweet shops

We haven't been for ages, but dragon castle always used to have great dim sum options. Have also been in the evening but love their lunch menus. Really easy to get to on the bus too!

I think that there is a distinction in that the emissions from the most modern approved burners are much much lower than open fires, and as you note, the frequency would be much less. That said, the whole point of me posting here was to try to dispel the myth that having a woodburner is a wholesome family fun way to heat your home. Unless you're living 'off grid' there really is no need for burners, and realistically they are used as an activity as well as a source of heat. All woodburners, including those sold as 'safe' or 'clean' produce pm2.5 and the effect on people is greater the closer to the source. In addition, the headline emission rates are only achieved where wood is stored in perfect conditions and burned at the right moisture levels. In reality this is not always the case. Its not what anyone wants to hear as people have spent a lot on them and like having them, but ALL woodburning produces carcinogenic matter. There are alternatives - gas fires or stoves although the best heating option is to insulate well and use central heating.

Interesting programme. It seems that the headline figures of percentage PM2.5 as a percentage of overall pollution could be overstated (eg it might not be as high as 30%) - which is interesting, but what is clear is that all burners still do release PM2.5 and that this is harmful to everyone but even more so to those with respiritory diseases. I've seen facebook ads recently where the headline has been around new legislation coming in and therefore upgrading stoves / burners to 'burn wood safely'. I think that the key thing is that if you're thinking of upgrading your burner, its possible to burn wood in a 'less polluting way', but not 'safely' in terms of the pollutants in your home and directly around it. One final point i noticed was that in terms of upgrading stoves, you can also get gas stoves as a replacement. They look the same but don't burn wood - also has the added advantage of not needing to store wood somewhere/ get it delivered etc!

Southwark School Street Closure Scheme
goldilocks replied to Passiflora's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was interested in seeing this in action so went past on Friday. I was a little late so got there at 4:04pm. There was no sign of the road closure at all. So 4 mins after the 1 hour afternoon scheduled closure of the road directly outside the school entrance, there was no sign of it! Am posting this as a little perspective amidst all the talk of sledgehammer to crack a nut etc. It?s a very limited closure scheme for an hour in the morning and one in the evening. The rest of the time the road is open as usual. I?m also presuming that it will also only apply in term time. The point of these schemes are to cut down on the pollution kids are exposed to on the school run, for all the reasons noted above re idling cars, dangerous parking etc. In an ideal world it wouldn?t be necessary because everyone would be very considerate. But that isn?t the case. Also worth flagging that small children are disproportionately affected by pollution as they are closer to the source re exhaust fumes as well as their relative size to amount of pollution. -
As you have noted - the closure of the Palmerston is completely unrelated to CPZ, and seemingly as a result of the landlord not renewing their lease. Either they think they can get someone who pays more (and therefore don?t think that a possible cpz spells economic doom for their location) or they want to change use. Either way I?ll be really sad to see the Palmerston go, but it really isn?t linked to this discussion.

Southwark School Street Closure Scheme
goldilocks replied to Passiflora's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not to detract from the school streets discussion, but the parking enforcement point is an important and very related one. In terms of deterrents to driving school streets could work if it became more effort to drive than to walk, but not if people can park across driveways / on corners/ on double yellows. I?ve seen all these things happen around goose green school at pick up time and the traffic warden being there but doing nothing about it and just waving to some of the parents involved. Even without school streets, proper enforcement of existing rules like not parking right up to junctions or on double yellows would make a huge difference to safety. I think what the school streets add is an additional layer of environmental safety for our children but they need to come with proper enforcement or they won?t work as intended. -
I don?t agree, but not agreeing is a reasonable response on a discussion forum. I?m not looking to stop your posts because of it. But in answer to your question re bonfires in ED (which I?m aware you?re not actually asking) legally you can have them, but from a social responsibility perspective there would be an argument for not doing so (much like woodburners). I think I was clear though that I?m not suggesting wood burning is illegal, more trying to understand if the now well documented if not well publicised harm caused by it even in efficient burners is understood.

Why should it be in the lounge? Genuine question? Thought this section was for ?issues affecting east dulwich?. I think that woodburner usage in East Dulwich is an issue for the local area. It?s not unique to here but it does affect us all and on an individual and collective level rather than theoretically
