E.D.Station controlled parking zone
peckhamboy replied to joobjoob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I assume that the controlled time would be 12-2 but that (without a permit) parking is limited to 1 hour, and no return within 1 hr or similar. That would seem like the logical solution but then I doubt whether a huge amount of logic has been applied to this idea. The consultation document certainly seems to suggest otherwise. -

That's my problem with it - the introduction of the CPZ itself creates the need for an extension due to the displacement of the parking. Looking at the 'initial plan', I cannot understand why Oglander Road is left completely uncontrolled despite being within a 3-4 min walk, whilst the far ends of Ondine Rd and ED Road are in the proposed zone but must be around a 10 min walk to the station. As far as I can see, the current plan would simply concentrate all of the commuter parking from quite a wide area into the very convenient triangle of Oglander Rd, Oxenford St and Everthorpe Road. That seems incomprehensible to me. -

Maybe garnwba - except the proposed zone cunningly and inexplicably leaves several uncontrolled streets within very easy walking distance, whilst controlling streets much further away that almost certainly have no commuter parking. If there is a genuine need for a CPZ to deter commuter parking (and I am yet to be convinced that there is) then: - the CPZ should be designed to actually achieve that - an all-day exclusion is unnecessary since even a 5 minute controlled period at 10am would be sufficient - the CPZ should be designed with residents' interests (rather than the council's revenue raising interests) in mind - the consultation should have been aimed at a wider audience than just those whom the council hopes would be broadly in support -

From the information on that link, it looks like the council is only consulting the properties within the proposed zone (which looks to be somewhat arbitrarily drawn in any case - I can't believe that there is much commuter parking for ED station at the far end of Ondine Rd, for example, whereas we live much closer and are outside the proposed zone yet likely to be much more significantly affected by it). The consultation appears to be fundamentally flawed in not taking into account opinions of people affected by the zone but not included, and gives no information on how it is proposed to fund the CPZ. Presumably residents' permits will be available only for a fee, but there is no indication that is the case or of how that fee will be calculated, for example. Edited to add: The consultation response can be filled out by anyone here (it's just not been publicised to anyone other then those in the proposed zone) Additionally, the council state that their studies show that "20%" of parking during the week is attributable to "commuters or non-residents". That seems to be a very low figure to be used to justify a CPZ, not least because it does not distinguish between non-residents (presumably people visiting residents, and not necessarily taking up parking space at peak hours or for long periods) and commuters (whom it is justifiable to deter from parking in residential areas). All in all, I would prefer to see some more objective justification of the need for a CPZ before the council can seek to impose one. -
James Thanks (and for the PM). Since there is a community notice board on that junction that magically appeared a couple of months ago but never seems to have much in it, perhaps the council could find a spare copy of the leaflet and stick it in there? It just strikes me that closing a fairly busy junction for a week might merit a little more publicity than simply sticking a note through the door of the nearest 5 houses.

James - what is "local"? We've not had anything but live within 100m of the Copleston Rd/Grove vale junction. We did have a consultation leaflet about a cycle contra-flow though, including a shared pathway across the pedestrianised area at that junction.

Bizarrely, having switched us to a Wednesday collection (and collecting brown and blue yesterday), a truck came round to collect the green bin waste this morning, which isn't due until next Wednesday. When I asked the chap what was going on, he said the dates were all messed up and we wouldn't have another collection for three weeks!

Turning right out of Elsie Rd is a bit dodgy now - the main road narrowing has reduced visibility to the right (meaning you have to accelerate quite hard because you can't tell if something else is about to appear) and they've narrowed the left hand carriageway immediately opposite so you have less room to pull out (making you hit the brakes again). Which bunch of geniuses came up with this ridiculous layout?

There's nice bits of SE15, not so nice bits of SE22, and vice versa. Choose a place you like and don't be put off by the postcode - houses in SE15 (even those in excellent locations) tend to be slightly cheaper than their SE22 equivalents, but that's probably a good thing. Copleston, Oglander, Ondine roads etc, up towards Bellenden Rd, Choumert Rd, PR station are all very nice. Typically, houses closer to ED station and Goose Green will be marginally more expensive than those towards PR station. There's been a fair bit of discussion on here before about this, so you might be able to find more views if you do a search.

I'm pretty ambivalent about whether the ticket office is staffed or not. In 5 years of living here and using the station every day, I've not once used the ticket office (well, actually, I tried to buy a travelcard there on my Oyster once and was told I had to use the machine...) But I'm surprised that ED is on the list of category "E" stations, given that these are "675 small staffed stations which typically have only one member of staff in attendance at any one time. Many stations will only be staffed for part of the day. Trips will be typically up to 250,000 per annum and revenue up to ?1 million." Surely ED has a lot more trips than that? Although I can appreciate that revenue may be less than ?1m, especially if they disregard ticket machine revenue.

Reading your posts makes me think you might be best off avoiding English Language. HTH.

Not sure, but when you figure it out perhaps you could say it in the Lounge?

Those nice people must be the exception that proves the rule. Peckham is a horrible place, where you are more likely to be knifed or mugged than to get a drinkable coffee, and we certainly don't want you 'orrible ED lot coming along and trying to change that. Incidentally, the cafe on Bellenden Rd near the Victoria does a decent coffee (sorry, can't remember its name).

parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park

I assume from his posts that DamianH is self-employed, and has to use free wifi in cafes to do his work because he can't afford internet at home. At the risk of inflaming the situation, may I suggest that were he to spend more time actually working and less time crafting (I use the word loosely) lengthy dissertations on The Selfishness of Parents, he might actually be able to afford his own internet access and thus spare himself the hideousness of daily contact with the food-throwing offspring of The Entitled Middle Classes of East Dulwich? Incidentally, I agree with him that much of the behaviour he describes at great length (blocking pavements, not acknowledging an opened door) can be considered rude, antisocial and possibly even in some cases offensive. But in no way can it be considered the sole preserve of parents of young children, and in no way can it be considered a feature of parents of young children. Ultimately, there are rude, antisocial and offensive people of all shapes and sizes and they will behave that way irrespective of whether they have children. Perhaps if Damian were to aim his fire at rude people generally, he would get more support on here. There is of course a risk that he would have to turn his fire on himself if he did that though. -

James See thread here about the new crossing by Denmark Hill station. Because it's been moved further from the bus stop (heading towards Camberwell), and in fact means that to use it you have to pretty much walk past the station and then back again, it's basically redundant. I have yet to see a single person use the crossing, but whole bus loads simply cross through traffic instead. Any chance that pressure could be put on TfL to show some common sense and put the bus stop on the sensible side of the lights? It's only a matter of time before someone gets knocked down there. -
Yes - they've moved the lights not the stop but it has the same effect. People getting off the bus now have to walk back past the station in order to cross the road at the lights, which is rather pointless, so instead everyone just crosses the road through traffic at the bus stop. If TfL had any sort of common sense at all, they would resite the stop before the new lights, which also reduces the chances of the bus getting held up in traffic and making people miss their train.

Yes, there's a secure buggy park area in there, with bike lock type things. I assume you'll need a coin or two but can't be sure... -
Set up a login on the Sky website and you can record programmes through that.

Townley green, you've got the wrong end of the stick I'm afraid. Please re-read my post. I never said teaching was easy. In fact, I am quite sure it is every bit as difficult and stressful as my job, and any number of other jobs, in different ways. The difference is that I and the vast majority of the population don't have 16 weeks holiday a year. Anyway, I have no intention of hijacking James' thread so I will say no more on the matter. -

Sounds great, James, but is a sabbatical really necessary or even going to help? Surely that's what the summer holidays are for? What makes a teacher more susceptible to burn-out than any number of people in the private sector, who don't have the benefit of 16 weeks holiday a year? My suggestion would be that perhaps (like many in the public sector) it's not so much burn out as the comfort of being in a job for life that leads to an erosion of performance over time. And I'm not sure there's many teachers out there who work for 60+ years... -

James - do these proposals appear on the Southwark website anywhere, and if so could you please post a link? I had a look but couldn't find anything. -
