    Theresa May PM

"My worry with May is that I suspect she is/was a secret Brexiter" She's been a senior member of Cameron's government since 2010 and I'd have thought even he would have realised if she had Brexiteer leanings. She may have been Cameron's fall-back in the event he lost the referendum. It's like watching a huge game of chess unfurl. Never been one for conspiracy theories before but we know very little about all the hidden wheeling and dealing within Parliament.
  2. So if Jeremy Corbyn remains, which seems more than possible, and has been revealed as a closet Brexiteer, he may attract the votes of those who voted Leave. I would prefer they voted for him and a Labour Party led by him than many of the other alternatives on offer. At least we're not thinking about Trump any more.
  3. You've missed out Teresa May and Liam Fox. Speaking as a non Tory, the first is the least horrendous but Liam Fox?? No, no, no.

I find her reasoning convincing. What would you have done if you were in her situation?

Cameron has said a lot of things since 2010 where the opposite has happened, the most recent being that Article 50 will be invoked immediately upon the result of the Referendum. So that's not necessarily that.
  6. I have received an email from Helen Hayes in response to one I sent her expressing my concerns about the result of the referendum. It was a long reply and sent also to the many people who have contacted her so I think it is probably OK for me to reproduce some excerpts here: "The blatant dishonesty of the Leave campaign, combined with the closeness of the result and the exclusion of 16 and 17 year olds from the ballot, to my mind create a very strong case for a second referendum. This second vote should give electors aged 16 and above the final say in accepting or rejecting a detailed proposal on the terms under which the UK would leave the European Union, a decision the consequences of which would reverberate for decades. I will do everything possible to ensure that Parliament explores this possibility to its fullest extent and would of course once again strongly campaign against these proposals to leave the European Union. "I am afraid, however, that despite my very strong support for the Remain campaign, I cannot back the proposal for Parliament to reject the referendum result. Support for the Remain campaign was highest in London and Scotland, while devastatingly low in many other parts of the country and I don?t believe that a plan to override the expressed wishes of voters in large parts of the rest of the UK would be credible. "I also believe that the strong support for Leave in parts of the UK was as much a vote against the political establishment as it was a vote against the EU, and for a part of the political establishment then simply to disregard the result would be highly divisive and potentially dangerous. We need to work instead on a vision for the country which addresses the concerns people have been seeking to express by supporting Leave, which unites our communities and which offers hope for the future. I will campaign for a second referendum based on honesty about the consequences of leaving the EU, but the decision about whether to Leave or Remain must continue to rest with the British people." I'm impressed

Agreed. And this whole miscalculation by Cameron has made me realise what a beneficial check Clegg provided during Cameron's first term.
  9. Shows an immature lack of judgement on her part and she'll probably live to regret it, but this does not invalidate the whole petition.
  10. I'm wondering whose bright idea it was to hold the referendum at the same time as the Euros, at a time when feelings of national identity run high.
  11. Though the Leave campaign won by 52%, this momentous step is based on the wishes of only approximately 37% of the electorate. This isn't democracy.
  12. I'm an older person and pleased to say I voted Remain. Will not be there on Tuesday but my spirit will be.

    EU Petition

So the petition was set up by a Brexiteer. Seems like a lot of players in this referendum have had their actions backfire on them. http://news.sky.com/story/1717815/second-referendum-petition-was-set-up-by-outer

At the moment, comments coming from the EU are being made by individuals, albeit powerful individuals, which may not become fact when the EU as a whole become involved in negotations. There's an awful lot of dust to settle before we can see the way forward with any clarity.

    EU Petition

Good article. What I am uncertain about is can the new prime minister, whoever he or she may be, trigger the Article 50 process without a debate and vote in the Houses of Parliament. I am asking this as a separate issue to the Petition calling for a second referendum. Parliament is said to be sovereign, is a Prime Minister able to bypass their authority? Blair did not receive Parliamentary approval for the Iraqi war but a Prime Minister is able to act this way to declare war.

    EU Petition

The news item was in The Scotsman and on rereading it, they seem to be putting words in Corbyn's mouth, not reporting what he actually said. Still think he should go as leader of the Labour Party, need someone with more balls. Metaphorically speaking!

Jeremy Corbyn is reported to have rejected the petition for a second referendum. What planet is he living on?

    EU Petition

No, the deal is not done, the referendum held on Thursday isn't even legally binding. As far as the other EU members wanting us gone ASAP,it's not up to them.

Very bravely said Louisa. If the petition for a second referendum gets debated, and with the number of signatures now it really should, this is just the kind of information that Helen Hayes (I'm assuming she is your MP) would find useful.

    EU Petition

It will give the opportunity for the many, many Remain MPs to argue against Brexit and against the whole validity and truth behind the Brexit campaign. I'm not sure of the numbers but if there's a cross party vote then the motion for a second referendum might be carried. (Difficult tactical choice for the SNP)

Signed - I'm not leaving quietly Approaching one and a half million
  22. Glazer Delmar's sign didn't bother me but the Winkworth one is hideous. Being at high level seems to make it more intrusive.
  23. The Co-op that used to be on Lordship Lane where the Haart and the other estate agent next door are did not survive the advent of Sainsburys in the 90s but Somerfield did. For a while the former Co-op premises became a Job Centre. Co-op returned to Lordship Lane when they bought out Somerfield in 2008. I hope the Co-op survives, I'd miss it more than Iceland, but I guess time will tell.
