East Dulwich Pub Quiz Recommendations
tomskip replied to camillasanger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi, we've been to quizzes at The Great Exhibition, Watson's General Telegraph, The Herne Tavern, The Clockhouse and The Picturehouse (for a rather niche movie quiz at which we performed dismally despite having some proper movie nerds on the team). Of these I think we all rated The Clock House as the best - for having an entertaining quiz master and interesting questions. We quite liked the quiz at Watson's but the drinks prices just seemed crazy there. Perhaps we were glugging more than normal that night. -
3 dogs poisoned and others very ill - Brockwell Park
tomskip replied to beansprout's topic in The Lounge
How awful! Those poor dog owners. -
Many cyclists come to a point in their lives when they need to transport 2 or 3 children and a partner around all at the same time and find that a car comes in handy for that. Or, they may have done a lot of car driving and enjoy the solitude that a lovely long cycle ride provides. Or they may be car owners but commute by bike because it's quicker and cheaper than the bus and congestion charge. In any event, I find it entirely plausible that a significant majority of cyclists also hold a driving licence and drive occasionally or frequently.

Man stabbed killed lordship lane / East Dulwich grove

The thread might not be helping anyone, but do all threads on here have to "help"? At the very least it is a place where people can express their sorrow and condolences. -
Man stabbed killed lordship lane / East Dulwich grove

I'll admit to feeling less secure knowing that this man has not yet been arrested. Is there even a description? CCTV? It feels odd that there has been so little information shared about the suspect. Perhaps there are reasons for that, I know nothing about police procedures. I was at Finsbury Park tube station the night Jonathan Zito was killed and it was the most shocking thing you can imagine. Everyone knows random murderous attacks are very rare but that doesn't mean it isn't disconcerting when it happens on your doorstep. -
Man stabbed killed lordship lane / East Dulwich grove

A crowd of Mr Anderson's family and friends were gathered outside the shop this afternoon. Heartbreaking for them all. I can't see from any of the reports, or have I missed it, but has there been an arrest? Or is the murderer still at large? -
Maybe something to do with the murder in ED last night.

Southwark School Street Closure Scheme
tomskip replied to Passiflora's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Really, I think Goodrich School do their best with inconsiderate drivers and parkers but they don't have the resources to police the streets every day. The problem at Goodrich is exacerbated by having two nurseries almost directly opposite one of their main entrances. -

CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich
tomskip replied to dulwichresident01's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not at all. I live at the furthest outpost of SE22 so it is a good 20 minutes walk for me to get to LL. If I want to do a food shop at the Co-Op or M&S plus a potter around all my other favourite shops and the market that's another 20 minutes walk back up the hill with a load of shopping bags. I'll still nip down to LL for the odd thing from Greetings or Farmers, no doubt, but can see myself otherwise driving to Crystal Palace for High Street type shopping. As an aside, I'd suggest you don't accuse people you don't know of being lazy - just incase they have a disability of some kind, or are maybe in the 70+ age bracket. That would be embarrassing for you. -
Care home fees when savings run out - any advice?
tomskip replied to Minitoots's topic in The Lounge
When this happened in my family my mother, on behalf of her 93 year old mother, had to get in touch with everyone in the family - all cousins and inlaws - and ask for contributions towards keeping our grandmother in the same care home. Just an absolutely bog standard care home, nothing fancy. Sad and shocking. -
CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich

I will definitely go elsewhere to shop if I have to pay for parking on or near Lordship Lane. Such a shame for our local independents. -
I have my doubts about these two businesses so close together too. I never see posts on the EDF "Help, I just can't find anyone to supply and fit my new windows and doors" so am not sure there is a shortage of supply in the area. Most of the Victorian housing stock in SE22 has been renovated fairly recently by now?

Recommended Primary Schools in East Dulwich
tomskip replied to sarahguha's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm not an expert but I'm not sure you can apply to a school unless you live at the address which will be your home address on the school application form. In other words you have to find a house before you can apply for a place at a local school. Although, as I said, I'm not an expert. But that was always my understanding. -
I've often wondered why there are such strict laws around the safety of children in cars and yet there doesn't seem to be the equivalent for children being transported on cycles. I've seen a person cycling with their newborn strapped to their chest in a sling.

It was there yesterday, but damaged.

Charter school East Dulwich opening date
tomskip replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Charter School (original) ceased to be an East Dulwich school a very long time ago, if it ever was. Geographically it is in SE24/SE21 (I haven't googled the post code). Even when it was in it's infancy, most of SE22 was excluded. To the untrained eye the intake seems a bit random due to sibling places carrying on for 15+ years, accepting students from families who rent in catchment for a year or two, and all their other flexible entrance criteria. Charter ED is so close it more or less shares a catchment and maybe it possibly relieves a bit of pressure on Kingsdale places but as Kingsdale accepts students from all over London, the relief of that pressure in SE22 might not be particularly noticeable. -
I tip the junior who washes my hair and takes my coat. Not the hairdresser who charges ?50 for a 30-40 minute job. As a woman I can never get away from the feeling I am subsidising the price of men's haircuts in the salons I frequent. Yes, I know business premises and overheads and everything else but I'm not sure hairdressers are particularly poorly paid - or are they?

Charter school East Dulwich opening date
tomskip replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Monkey, according to a friend loads of girls from Goodrich school got a place at Sydenham Girls this year. So don't assume you won't ... I would have thought on Dunstans Road it would be pretty certain? But of course disappointing if you wanted a co-ed school. Charter ED all very well but it is annoyingly close to the other Charter and doesn't really help children around the Nunhead/Peckham Rye/Forest Hill Road/Upland/Dunstans/Overhill/Underhill Roads areas.
