Southwark School Street Closure Scheme
tomskip replied to Passiflora's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Really, I think Goodrich School do their best with inconsiderate drivers and parkers but they don't have the resources to police the streets every day. The problem at Goodrich is exacerbated by having two nurseries almost directly opposite one of their main entrances. -
No water Underhill Rd (Horniman end) - anyone else affected?

None here, top end of Upland Road towards Lordship Lane. -
CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich
tomskip replied to dulwichresident01's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not at all. I live at the furthest outpost of SE22 so it is a good 20 minutes walk for me to get to LL. If I want to do a food shop at the Co-Op or M&S plus a potter around all my other favourite shops and the market that's another 20 minutes walk back up the hill with a load of shopping bags. I'll still nip down to LL for the odd thing from Greetings or Farmers, no doubt, but can see myself otherwise driving to Crystal Palace for High Street type shopping. As an aside, I'd suggest you don't accuse people you don't know of being lazy - just incase they have a disability of some kind, or are maybe in the 70+ age bracket. That would be embarrassing for you. -
Care home fees when savings run out - any advice?
tomskip replied to Minitoots's topic in The Lounge
When this happened in my family my mother, on behalf of her 93 year old mother, had to get in touch with everyone in the family - all cousins and inlaws - and ask for contributions towards keeping our grandmother in the same care home. Just an absolutely bog standard care home, nothing fancy. Sad and shocking. -
CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich
tomskip replied to dulwichresident01's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I will definitely go elsewhere to shop if I have to pay for parking on or near Lordship Lane. Such a shame for our local independents. -
I have my doubts about these two businesses so close together too. I never see posts on the EDF "Help, I just can't find anyone to supply and fit my new windows and doors" so am not sure there is a shortage of supply in the area. Most of the Victorian housing stock in SE22 has been renovated fairly recently by now?

Recommended Primary Schools in East Dulwich
tomskip replied to sarahguha's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm not an expert but I'm not sure you can apply to a school unless you live at the address which will be your home address on the school application form. In other words you have to find a house before you can apply for a place at a local school. Although, as I said, I'm not an expert. But that was always my understanding. -
I've often wondered why there are such strict laws around the safety of children in cars and yet there doesn't seem to be the equivalent for children being transported on cycles. I've seen a person cycling with their newborn strapped to their chest in a sling.

It was there yesterday, but damaged.

Gently bumping this post for the New Year. Still hoping to add to our group to get together and support each other in moving onwards and upwards in 2019. Please let me know via pm if you would be interested. Thanks! Jackie.

Charter school East Dulwich opening date
tomskip replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Charter School (original) ceased to be an East Dulwich school a very long time ago, if it ever was. Geographically it is in SE24/SE21 (I haven't googled the post code). Even when it was in it's infancy, most of SE22 was excluded. To the untrained eye the intake seems a bit random due to sibling places carrying on for 15+ years, accepting students from families who rent in catchment for a year or two, and all their other flexible entrance criteria. Charter ED is so close it more or less shares a catchment and maybe it possibly relieves a bit of pressure on Kingsdale places but as Kingsdale accepts students from all over London, the relief of that pressure in SE22 might not be particularly noticeable. -
I tip the junior who washes my hair and takes my coat. Not the hairdresser who charges ?50 for a 30-40 minute job. As a woman I can never get away from the feeling I am subsidising the price of men's haircuts in the salons I frequent. Yes, I know business premises and overheads and everything else but I'm not sure hairdressers are particularly poorly paid - or are they?

Charter school East Dulwich opening date
tomskip replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Monkey, according to a friend loads of girls from Goodrich school got a place at Sydenham Girls this year. So don't assume you won't ... I would have thought on Dunstans Road it would be pretty certain? But of course disappointing if you wanted a co-ed school. Charter ED all very well but it is annoyingly close to the other Charter and doesn't really help children around the Nunhead/Peckham Rye/Forest Hill Road/Upland/Dunstans/Overhill/Underhill Roads areas. -
Wow, how low can you go? Trying to embezzle money out of a school fair? I don't know if I find that sad or outrageous.

Hello Forum, I thought I?d see if there?s any interest out there in forming a group for women to meet and support each other in achieving goals in improved fitness, physical well-being, mental well-being and weight loss? My thinking is that there are proven benefits to working in a group to achieve goals like these, but the more prescriptive commercial groups like Weight Watchers and Slimming World just don?t suit some people (me being one of them!). I?m imagining a group of, say, 10/15/20 women meeting once a week for a couple of hours, for mutual support and encouragement, ideas swapping, finding exercise buddies and so on - with the focus on improving all round physical health and happiness (weight loss being a definite aim but not the overarching focus of every discussion). I am female and middle aged, generally pretty cheerful and healthy but would like to get rid of some of the poundage that has joined me since I was 40. If you feel you might like to meet up with me and similar women (all ages!) and get a group off the ground then please get in touch via PM. Many thanks, Jackie.

Just wondering how come wood burning stoves are an AOK desirable home addition in London, and no doubt other densely populated cities, when open fires (coal or wood) are not? When I'm outside in the early evening at this time of year it always strikes me how much everything stinks of wood smoke. It's probably the same late in the evening but I'm mostly hunkered down by then. Surely it can't go on?

HE'S HOME! - One last push for lost tabby cat Cheetah
tomskip replied to AdrianB's topic in Lost, Found or Stolen
That's fantastic! So happy for you. In the days before the Forum, I found a ginger cat crying and frightened in my porch on the night of a terrible storm. I took him in and fed him and gave him a box and blanket to sleep on in our lean-to. I let him out the next day but he just hung around our house. So I made found posters at work and traipsed around the neighbourhood putting them up (I was 8 months pregnant at the time). Lots of people rang me and came to see him but sadly he was not their cat. He was still turning up at our house every day so of course I felt I needed to feed him and look after him as best I could, even though our own cat was not keen! I became very fond of the little chap and secretly hoped no one would claim him and we would keep him and our cat would eventually deign to accept him. But after another couple of weeks someone else called me, she came round, it was indeed her cat Seamus and there was a happy reunion in our garden. I was really sad to see him go and still think about him! He was three streets away from home. Hopefully Cheetah has had someone looking out for him in his time away. -

Nico replied to our enquiry after a day or two ... we just thought he was probably too busy to answer right away! He came and sorted out our problem quickly and is coming back to do a different, larger job soon. And no, Sue, he did not ask us to put a review on the Forum for him. I just thought I would do so now having seen your questionable comment.

I think I prefer a more old fashioned ?5.00 per adult kids go free type of event. I mean they are just fireworks! Was mighty pissed off to be woken from my slumbers at 11.55pm to fireworks going off near the top end of Upland Road. It's not bloody New Years Eve. Set them off at a civilised time ffs.

Just to be a bit doom and gloom for a moment I have never forgotten this amazing tale written up so brilliantly by Decca Aitkenhead, from the days when I would enjoy a read of the Saturday Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/nov/13/filmadaptations
