  1. Mr Kurt is a delight, and I can second the positive recommendation made my Huston, but for a 5 year old? Really? Surely they're only just learning to read & write? Unless she's a child genius, in which case ignore my surprise, and I hope you'll accept my apology as it's based only on my perception of an average 5 year old, which largely features mud pies not extra maths tuition. It doesn't include child geniuses.
  2. My personal favourite: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fly-London-Womens-Chelsea-P143195002/dp/B00LD38S20/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1420987986&sr=8-17&keywords=fly+london+ankle I also really like these as a waterproof alternative to converse, though I'd pop a sheepskin lining inside for warmth. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Camper-Portol-46620-009-Ankle-boots-Women/dp/B00HZQU2AK/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1WZ1VQ4T8JW3N
  3. Cute info-clip
  4. Thankyou Mong17, Your original post sounded as though you were connecting the chances of having a caesarean with attendance at NCT classes - obviously something I would need to challenge as there is no evidence for this. You have clarified for me, and for anyone else reading this thread that it wasn't your intention to state that so that's good - Thankyou. To answer your query in return. Yes, all NCT teaching is evidence based. There is a lot of confusion about what's taught as NCT signature teachers are not given a course format to follow, rather we are trained to teach responsively so that we can teach whatever the course attendants want/need us to - so the course you had will be different from the course I cover, which will be different from the course Saffron had etc.etc. Anything we teach though must be evidence based (up -to date evidence too, ideally not something from more than 10 years ago) and you can always ask your teacher to back up anything she tells you. It's very sad that you didn't feel you got what you needed from your course. In defence of your teacher (though I don't know who it was), and all antenatal teachers, I would say we have a limited amount of time in which to cover the entire range of situations, and people you might encounter in labour and birth, and of course all the post birth essentials too. Something of an impossible task, but we do try! I won't put more, as I feel that I'm highjacking the thread about birth experiences at Kings. I will say that I had all four of mine with KCH midwives, and have had a mixed bag of care, with some amazing community midwives; one utterly awful birth experience; and some 'meh' midwives. On the whole I think KCH is fab, with many, many dedicated, women-centred midwives and doctors (Dr Penna being something of a star). We are very very lucky indeed to live so close and have it as our local hospital for care throughout our births - however our babies come out. And thank you for that lovely comment midivydale :) SWx
  5. mong17 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What the NCT and other proponents of active birth don't make clear enough in my opinion is that it is no guarantee the birth will go faster or smoothly. The concurrent rise in women going to NCT classes and ending up with emergency cs makes this pretty clear! Mong17, as a local NCT teacher I am alarmed to see this posted on an open forum. Please can you supply me with a link the research to back up your claim that emergency caesarean is concurrent with attending `NCT classes? I have never come across any studies that suggest such a link, and my personal course statistics do not bear out your comments. I have a feeling that this statement may just be your personal opinion and not evidence based at all, if so please could you make this clear? Thankyou.
  6. I think Southwark will come and collect it if you call them - don't know how ethical their recycling is though?

We moved here in 95 & started having children shortly after - I spent a lot in Binester toys and was sad to see it go (not as sad as I was to lose Woolworths - still in mourning - but that's a whole other thread sure.

Will it encourage him to pick it up in future though? If this man couldn't be bothered to see the impact his selfishness has on the community before, I sadly doubt a fine will change his ways.

  10. I'm very glad that ED is get another much needed primary. I remember thinking 'how short sighted' when they sold off the one of Northcross rd. What a waste that was.
  11. Yes, we've noticed more parakeets roosting in our trees, and a comparable decline in smaller birds. It does make me wonder whether there's a connection?
  12. Another ice-cream shop in ED?! Goodness, that's two very specialised businesses within quite a small area - I hope they've done their homework round sustainability.
  13. I'm a nivea girl or Boots no 7 - with SPF. I tried the Neals yard frankincense stuff once, but it smelled so rank that I had to give it away in the end :( Each to their own I guess.
  14. Sol, I think Buggie is trying to highlight the inappropriate use of your term "they make you wait'. The staff in A&E don't 'make you' do anything. After triaging (prioritising) you can chose to wait until a doctor is free to see you (which might be 10 mins, or indeed 3-4hours), or you can chose to try elsewhere. Either way it is your decision, and no-one 'makes' you' wait. A&E staff get enough flack for little recompense, I think it's important to be mindful of not using emotive language when describing your view of their care. I'm with Elm Lodge too and very sorry to hear of your trials with them recently. Their system has always worked exceptionally well. I hope they haven't changed it for the worse?
  15. Came on ready to recommend a Vespa, but see my interpretation of 'scooter' is a little out of kilter. :D Still, the thought of Kes's 5yr whizzing round on her Christmas Vespa tickled me - hehehe. Maybe in Italy eh?
  16. The other difference to consider when booking is whether it's important to you that the person leading the course is local themselves. Traditionally the advantage NCT classes had over other private providers was the local knowledge of the teacher e.g. What it's actually like to be a user in your unit (has the teacher on your course used any of the local units herself?); how to get the best out of local Midwife services; where to park for the hospital; baby friendly cafe's to meet up in; where to get good local information; the best baby classes to go to; the good local nurseries and schools even! In recent years with changes in the structure of the charity this has changed & you can no longer assume that your teacher is from the area and will have this knowledge. If it's something important to you please check with [email protected] to see whether the teacher is local before you book. In ED & Nunhead you have two teachers, both running signature courses, who are living here, raising families here and using all the local services here so this option is still available to you should you want it.
  17. Bloomers on LL, or Fitting Room in FH.
  18. Someone I knew used one of those travel neck cushions from Sainsbury's for the first few months. She swore by it, and was particularly pleased with how portable it was. It might be a useful temporary aid if nothing else? :D
  19. Lewisham, their Birth centre is second to none. It really is a lovely, tranquil place to have a baby, and staffed by amazing, supportive midwives. Having said that, I imagine it kind of depends which hospital the Midwives at your local GP practice in Penge are allied with?
  20. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Philly with different food colourings. Kids love > that shit. PMSL Gotta love Otta :D
  21. Another Mirena fan here. I'm on my second now. Each time I have bled for a few months almost continuously, but nowhere near as heavily as a period - a two pantyliner per day issue and nothing overnight (apologies if tmi?!). With the first one it settled after a few months and I had no periods at all then for the duration of having the coil in (4 or 5 years - can't recall exactly?). Am in the bleeding phase with this one & waiting for it to settle, but even with the bleeding it's nothing like having periods - nowhere near.
  22. I understood that Oakwood are for women registered at Forest Hill road group practice, but if you've had a previous woman with them they'll try to accommodate you on their caseload. You can however self refer to the Brierly.
  23. 1st birthday? Your house. With help. :D
