    West wickham

I grew up in Coney Hall and the denizens of West Wickham looked down on us with disdain from the top of the hill. I would say that proximity to the countryside and open green spaces are the big pluses - we used to love playing on Hayes Common as kids. It's a shame that it is still very monocultural but I think Ratty has summed up the pros and cons. I am not sure why Louisa is so enamoured of Bromley. When I moved there in the late 60's it still had some character but now it's now a soul-less, bland shopping mall. From West Wickham I'd head over to Croydon, which (and I never thought I would say this) seems to be undergoing a renaissance with some decent independent shops and cafes along with all of the larger stores.

  8. 'Of course they do! Any nation state which has refugee's and asylum seeker's inside their borders should be providing basic care and human rights, whatever country that may be'...... 'However, I do agree that all EU states must take their fair share of asylum seekers and refugees. It seems a shame that this country turned its back on the Italian's by not offering to take at least a proportion of those migrants who were rescued in the med.' 'All this middle class do-gooding is all well and good, but would they return the favour if you or your family were desperate? That's what you need to ask yourself. I've had plenty of crap in my life and no one helped me.'

  15. What I find aggravating is that they were supposed to have conductors, be air conditioned and allow hop on hop off from the rear platform. I haven't been on one that has a conductor, the air conditioning never seems to work - and you can't open the windows - and the rear doors are always firmly shut. In fact the drivers tend not to open the rear door at all, even when passengers want to get off. When they do open it, there is now an announcement telling you to move away from the door because it sweeps across the platform.
  16. Does anyone know whether we will ever be rid of these buses? I caught one from Oxford Circus today and it was stifling hot, I got back pain from sitting in the impossibly uncomfortable seats, and from what I can see, very few people tapped in so tfl must be losing as much money as they did with the bendy buses. It was a relief to get on a 40 at Medlar Street
