It IS crap in the way it indicates tickets are available then says "No" at payment. However....I managed to get 2 good tickets on it yesterday afternoon to the womens soccer gold medal game at Wembley on Thurs night. Not a prime event granted but sold out last week. And if the unthinkable happens and Canada beat the US champs tonight the missus will love it. Secondly, I'm reliably informed of the time that all new tickets are added to the system is approx 11.30 - 12 midnight which explains the above. Worth a try later tonight?

Concrete House Lordship Lane - Public Inquiry

Otta Wrote: > Oh, and for the most part the buildings in > Sydenham, Penge and Forest Hill are far superior > to anything in East Dulwich. Spot on. Especially for the old stock (pre 1930's). Some lovely houses Sydenham/Penge way. The better Victorian /Edwardian builds in East Dulwich are areas closer to the village on the Estate (Druce, Desenfans) but even then they are smaller than Sydenham's finest. -
Application for extended late licence at the Great Exhibition
MrBen replied to BigED's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Notwithstanding I do like The Great Exhibition - but as has been said above that's not the point. I reckon all live music in neighborhood type areas after 11.30pm should be confined to the main/high streets. That still gives enough time for any band to get a decent set in - and a few beers after. -
Application for extended late licence at the Great Exhibition
MrBen replied to BigED's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have also objected to this application - for all of the good reasons listed above. However, there seems to be a problem with the Southwark website and I got several script errors when trying to access the information. This means last minute objectors may not have been able to lodge an appeal due to not being able to access the requisite info. I have made Southwark aware and instead objected by straight email.... -
?120-?250k+ depending on spec and footprint size to fully restore and convert a 4 bed terrace with loft and extension properly. If you want to slap lipstick on a pig and cut a few corners you could do it for perhaps ?90k minimum. Or you could do it yourself if you had the time.... I now know this to be true.

Glastonbury - pre-fence wild and crazy rock n roll... now Wayne Rooney, Orange mobile and Jay Z. Carnaby Street- Recent makeover has helped bring it out of 80's leather jacket hell but it's 1967 heyday has long gone. Adventure Bar - vs before it was Adventure Bar. Granada Service stations - perhaps it was because I was a kid in the 1980's. But they seemed like places of dreams. Now overcrowded Moto KFC toilets with people in there that you never see anywhere else.

I might stand alone, but I've never understood the fuss about Brighton. I like a stroll down a faded 1920'a pier and bracing sea air like the next man but cant understand the crap restaurants, pubs and shops selling crap + general druggie decay.

And my missus hasn't run off with him....yet...

I'm about as deep into it as you can get. A complete renovation of a 4 bed ED terrace. By that I mean stripping back to the joists, raising chimney breasts, new extension, loft conversion, new roof. With 4 weeks to go it's been amazingly easy. Our Polish guys are living up to the cliche - everything has been done on time, quality higher than expected and it's been the tidiest site I've seen and when there are problems they just get on with the most cost effective solution (and most times haven't charged more than cost). The main problem is most folk don't realise what it actually costs to get stuff done properly. Foundations that meet building regs, proper insulation, drainage, DPC's etc - all have their short cuts or you can invest in doing it right. Bottom line is that it IS totally unregulated industry in the UK so you're always taking pot luck. We got ?50k variation in quotes which tells you a lot. Build standards in Germany and Switzerland ARE way higher, there's more generally a better work ethic and more craftsmanship all round.

Little things that help when you are fed up of rain
MrBen replied to womanofdulwich's topic in The Lounge
The chalkstreams....for trout and flyfisherman. They are fed by deep underground aquifers which are normally recharged by winter rain. That natural process hasn't happened properly over the past decade, and only has recently as April, the Env. Agency was predicting disaster for the rivers, flylife and fish. All until this summer's rain. Ditto British Salmon rivers where higher summer water levels allow more salmon returning from the Atlantic to evade predators and spawn safely. -
Ted. Claw hammer please...

?70k plumbers? Easily if they want it. Moaning cabbies who bang on about gentrification get me more. I know several black cab drivers who make a relatively easy ?50- 70k a year depending on hours. Factor in it's a cash business, the fact they all seem to have a safe at home and two sets of books and on a net basis it's closer to equivalent of a fully taxed ?100k PAYE wage. The myth is that London is a two tiered teachers/public sector vs bankers world. Averages are massively misleading.

Strafer - I'm not actually talking about everyones favourite SE22 tea shop here. Just making the general point. Which is...there is atill no *robust* legal protection for genuine, hard working businesses who are unfairly targeted by some tw@t with a grudge when it comes to social media. Free speech and opinions? Of course. But in the cases where it's genuinely malicious then what? You "engage" and give it back? Damage is already done. It would be nice to think everyone could apply sensible, discerning criteria and context before making up their own mind but when it comes to Twitter etc millions won't.

Taking a business owners perspective though...you can half kill yourself to build a great business, in a recession and work damn hard for years only to have your carefully built reputation destroyed in minutes because of potentially unsubstantiated, malicious attacks on the web forums. The law has yet to catch up. Flip it the other way and it's a genuine threat. Not justifying their stance but there's another point of view here.

No worsethan me. All my correct score preds and group positions have been way off and my Paddy Power kitty for Euro 2012 is now down to ?25. Not quite sure what to do with it *slopes off to betting thread*

I used to live on the junction of Landells and Sylvester in ED's very own mini version of the Flatiron building. Anyway there are about 30 yards of kerb space that don't have any houses fronting on to the street and it was amazing how many people just thought it was the best place to dump all kinds of outsize rubbish. Almost nonchalantly.

Coronet. I like that venue - not sure why it's not used more often given Elephants accessibility and the zone 1 location. It is intimate whilst having a decent atmos. I saw Primal Scream there in "Country Girl" era and broke my wrist!

Camberwell Grove on Secret History of our Streets Next Week!
MrBen replied to the-e-dealer's topic in The Lounge
What struck me most was the utter folly of so many 60's planning decisions in central London, and how we are still living with the consequences in 2012. Knocking down crescents of 3 story victorian terraces off the Caldedonian Road (of which some remaining on nearby street now go for ?2M each) to put in place mouldering pre-fabs that have half the lifespan was a crime. It's not all about "desirable" period property but you have to wonder if they could have maintained those old properties for less than it cost to build the concrete stuff. And then this weird subscribed view from planners and architects of what modern living was supposed to look like - people stopping for a chat on the subway under Elephant after doing their shopping etc. No consideration of simple landscaping that works and makes everyone feel better about life. As DJKQ says we've almost come full circle. -
Aye, Woodrot just mimicking the usual English media response when ducking out a major tournament. Turnips etc I think Hodgson has done a very decent job though. Most expat Scots wanted England to win (it makes our week easier). No shame in tonight at all.

I think it's just usual EDF sniffy banter Jumpingbean. The world is full of armchair cynics, many of whom won't bother their arses to do anything. Completing a book takes a great deal of time, hard work, motivation and discipline - whatever anyone says and whatever anyone thinks of the content it's a huge achievement so well done (and good luck).

If we're too crap to qualify for anything since Italia '98 then tough - it's a good standard to aim to return to no? We certainly don't need charity and I'd prefer to keep the bar high.

Camberwell Grove on Secret History of our Streets Next Week!
MrBen replied to the-e-dealer's topic in The Lounge
For a documentary I thought both have been excellently researched, produced and filmed so far. I love how they've found and focussed on true characters. Projecting the old films onto a the side of a terrace in Deptford and that sweeping camera sequence of the high street and it's characters against the gospel music before the credits was telling and moving. It's amazing what can be said with a camera without dialogue. Beautiful and almost enough to make me want to start watching TV again.
