  1. Few weeks back when I went in by myself for a quiet pint, the little guy who reads books in the back and who looks like Noddy muttered "police" to the barman. First time I've had that! Sent from the last Eurostar by Crackberry.
  2. If (i) they made great cocktails or (ii) it had atmosphere then it would have a purpose. The barman admitted to me that they "don't proclaim to make the best cocktails in London" but rather want to create "a fun place with fun drinks and fun tunes". Think Tenerife Uncovered. But in East Dulwich.

I did this at Bushells once - Winkworth are clearly the worst for this. I had one outside for almost a year!
  4. As possibly the first pub in Peckham to feature fresh flowers, candles and patterned wall paper, the rye got pent up metrosexual yuppie demand spot on when it opened in late 2004. I believe that the owners other half was/is an interior designer and presenter of quality TV show "60 minute makeover" (last seen on Living). So I expect to see a design that is very post boom "late 2010" and on the money. Good luck to Scott and Diane - they have done a great job in bringing some quality indie pubs to this corner of London.

No Threshers, M&S or Richer Sounds rumours from me... :)) That's not to say this wont be co-op branded by opening which is still a possibility..... I have to say that I'm totally baffled as to why they are opening two sites so close to each other - unless they plan to sell off their current prime Lordship Lane location, take the profit and relocate which would make sense. Prices for commerical supermarket food premises have remained steady in this recession (versus rest of commercial property market down 25-35%) because they are government licensed, in limited supply and people still eat in a downturn (albeit more cheaply) so logically I reckon a sell off of the current site is a high possibility. Bt more to the point do we want two Somerfields? - I think the consensus here is a big fat "NO".
  6. yes they are (see post below)
  7. On a more practical note - Barry Road has now reopened. 12 buses are back running up it. A single bunch of flowers marks the scene. Very sad.
  8. Terrible. I was about 300 yards away walking down the street with my parents when it happened. Talking about what a nice place ED is. This is the second shooting on Barry Road in 3 years....
  9. One of those is my Polish builder! He's totally skint but obviously managed to buy a beautiful single rose. There is a story behind every one of those pics....great stuff.
  10. This thread was started when our three flats were broken into a fortnight ago. All three doors kicked in. The one with yale only - no damage. Mine trashed. New frame and door needed....we are also getting a London bar fitted on the communal door. Doesn't matter what time of day - ours was 1pm on a Wednesday in broad daylight! Anyway....quick update...police recovered a mobile phone stolen from one of our flats from a guy caught breaking into a flat in Brixton. They cant prove he did ours but have charged him with handling stolen goods and breaking and entering. So well done the police for that one. They are on the case for more too.... The burlgar had taken a photo of himself on the phone! His description? 20 yrs old, black, baseball cap. No sign of his mates (as was a group did ours) or all my stolen stuff. Edited to remove potentially in flammatory comments now that I have passed the "anger phase".:)
  11. Indeed... let's see....
  12. We have a new Somerfield opening just down from The Plough. Quite why I am not exactly sure - it will be useful for those of us up that end of the lane but catastophic for the little grocers like Val's and the cheery Seikh chaps that run the great little newsagents opposite Plough DIY. They have a petition on their counter asking all their loyal customers for support and are clearly deeply worried about their future livlihood. Somerfields is rubbish. I have often walked in there and not seen any shrink wrapped crap I want to actually buy. I don't understand why they need two stores in SE22 or if the current site will be sold off / or become a Co op following the takeover. And also not great news for local independents and my 2nd favourite sunday paper shop. Not happy!

OK so "a few inches of snow". As opposed to *SNOW!* Not good enough!
  14. Great - a forum snowball fight! I have went up to snowy Dulwich Park for breakfast in the cafe and it was a fantastic winter wonderland. Everyone smiling young and old.... Louisa - good to have you back. For me the most rubbish thing is weathermen and weather forecasts. Did anyone recall hearing any warnings of heavy snow paralysing London....even yesterday morning ? Rubbish! They clearly dont have a clue! But that is the beauty of the natural world we live in.
  15. Yes you do. Unless you have a helicopter.
  16. No buses running. Southern running emergency timetable only but yet to see any. All day party in the Bishop!
  17. Tony LS, believe me if I had seen them there would have been trouble! We were all out - but a few neighbours across the street saw a white van and heard some noise - strangely no faces though - just assumed they were builders - as would anyone probably. You just dont think about it. Nobody would bat an eyelid at that in ED...I have to admit it was quite impressive. And I thought it wouldn't happen to me!
  18. Coops uses Kosher beef hot dogs for his Northcross Road stall that he has sourced from a butcher in North London - ask him nicely and he might tell you where....
  19. I was also burgled in the same incident this thread refers to. These guys were organised, dressed as removal men, whistling, broad day light (Wed lunchtime) on a nice central ED street before systematically emptying my flat into their van. They'd also been walking around my place with a table leg in their hand...shame I left the 5 shot pump action 12 bore back up north as I would have had no hesitation in using it! A few other details I cant go into on the forum but police have a good lead - problem is they're simply too busy working stuff that matters much much more e.g. our forensic guy was off to do a rape after. It's kind of hard for me to moan about losing my TV, lap tops, 21st birthday presents and the rest when you hear that. Anyway - all communal flat owners - cant stress enough get a bolt thumb lock in addition to the Yale, a note on the inside of the door reminding all residents to keep it locked. And buy an external hard drive to back up your lap top photo's etc...you don't realise what you have lost until its gone. Anyway - instant karma is going to get them. Mark my words....
  20. Lets hear it for Mr Benn
  21. Quite appropriate it was 250 sold - as it is the 250th anniversary of Burns birth. A very special day. Radio 3 has been playing Burns readings and songs all week - a nice touch. Also see BBC 4 at 9pm tonight. Haggis is a actually fairly heathly dish, much better for you than..say....an English sausage. Or chicken tikka masala - which I'm led to believe is your own national dish? ;-) If you have yet to try it...perhaps tonight you should? You will be pleasantly surprised. I raise a glass to the bard!
  22. Do not forget - it is Burns Night on Sunday. The unofficial national day for all Scots around the world. And William Rose have sold out of Haggis! (250 apparently) No idea where I'll get one now and trying to avoid Sainsburys. I will be addressing the beast! I raise a dram to the bard. And to all Scots - happy Burns Night.
  23. Made to measure shirts. And beef monster munch.
  24. Ocean - nice one and well done for picking the Upper East Side. It's a good spot - you're on the park, Peckham /rye Station to whisk you into town (more trains than ED) yet still 5 mins walk from central Mid Town lordship lane, Coopers Nacho stall and you have the Clockhouse, The Rye and The Gowlett as equidistant locals. What more do you want?!
  25. Are you mad? Ordering trout in Hisar is like ordering a steak and chips from the "British menu" at Mr Lieus. Hisar is fantastic - but stick to what they are great at - grilled meat. Their best dishes are grilled lamb cubes or grilled chicken with salad and rice. They also do a special lamb dish with a sauce - cant remember but its the priciest one. The homous and pitta are also good. Not the best wine list but a few cheery drinkable bottles on it. And the most gentlemanly old school efficient waiters that always make any women swoon.....
