  2. I think that someone who appears to be trying a little too hard to be alternative may in fact be just that -trying too hard. It's not necessarily the case, as I already said- but by the time you get to middle age, most people have realised that it's not as important to scream your specialness, your unique quirkiness as maybe they thought in their youth.
  3. ... I should add however, that I've no problem with a 'parlour' opening in ED. Good luck to anyone looking to set up a new business (and to anyone wishing to get a tat for that matter).
  4. I can get the appeal of a tattoo when you are young. There is something rebellious about a tattoo don?t you think? The fact that some people dislike them, that they mark you apart somehow. Getting one when you?re older though - it just seems a bit try hard to me. As with any overt fashion statement born from a desire to be cool / rebellious there is something implicitly adolescent and incoherent in the message ? ?look at me, I don?t care what you think... but do look at me?. That?s forgivable in the young, but a bit sad when you?re a 40 year old. Sure, a middle aged man with green hair and a goatee could be a really fun and interesting character, but I bet it?s more likely that they?re just a bit of a dick. Having said this however, there is something in the argument that the old perceptions of tattoos are out of date. They?ve become so ubiquitous as to be barely remarkable, certainly no longer very dangerous or rebellious. Personally I think this may be the worst thing about them for me. They?ve lost any power they may have once claimed. Tattoos are ?trendy?, merely another adjunct to the ultimately vacuous world of fashion. Just more ?stuff? that?s been coopted into the mainstream, sanitised and repackaged for a mass market (with Robbie Williams and David Beckham as sponsors). The fact that people have already been discussing it?s monetary value, how this may be what gives (or takes away) from it?s meaning, says a lot. Consumerism :(
  5. I don't understand why unsolicted door to door sales aren't simply outlawed. Does anyone at all appreciate this type of 'service'?
  6. Blimey Pugwash, sorry to hear this. Hope you're not too spooked by what happened.
  7. It's a bit of a conspicuous way to sell drugs I'd have thought.
  8. It may not be crack exactly but those magnums are pretty moreish.
  9. Was just watching these from the bus. Lovely.
  10. Interesting article in today's Guardian, re. faith schools
  11. At my previous surgery in camberwell, the group of receptionists would stand around chatting with a queue formed in front of them. If you timidly attempted an "excuse me" they would mace you. There were some rough types attending the surgery, but if you politely spoke to them in a gentle voice they'd have a security guard rugby tackle you to the ground then continue talking about who got off with who at the club last night, to a chorus of "is it".
  12. When it comes to sexual matters, I think it's best to consult a celibate man in a dress. Or one working for an organisation engulfed in multiple child abuse scandals.
  13. Walked past today. The beautiful old bar has been ripped out. It is now open plan and I am a bit sad.
  14. There can be nothing more to say on this topic. Just want to see the thread tip over into 29 pages. must be a record, no?
  15. I think most people in ED would be delighted if a Waitrose opened up in Honor Oak... it's only up the road after all.
  16. It's all an inevitable part of the gentrification of ED. Give it ten years and we'll have pheasants and peacocks mincing about. The pigeons are simply being priced out of the area.

  18. I saw a flock of them swoop down and pick up a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
  19. Please don't rip out the bar, or any of the original features... That is all.

Was this around the time of the riots? You may have misunderstood his meaning.

Totally agree. A major improvement to Peckham (and the Elephant) would have a huge knock on effect to the wider SE area. They are the two big centres for this part of London and both have seen better days. It's a shame that the E&C regeneration has gone so far off course.
