Boris Johnson moving to Dulwich Village? What have we done to deserve this? ;-)
malumbu replied to MrsR's topic in The Lounge
Is this post relevant to East Dulwich, will he be seen in the Cheese Block, North Cross Road, Sainsbury's or DHFC? If not perhaps move to the Lounge or hyperspace. What a killjoy I'm being on this lovely morning! -
You've lost me here. There is a photo of Dulwich village with some traffic on it. As it always has in rush hour. It doesn't appear to be bumper to bumper but if it is, this simply shows that many motorists will drive whatever. If you have a point to make then please explain it rather than leave it vague/cryptic

Anyone with an actual long term vision/plan for the UK?
malumbu replied to TheCat's topic in The Lounge
Starting to get my head around things. So the Johnson government proposed a radical approach to land management and improving biodiversity. Truss is already getting the bulldozers ready (fast tracking commercial and residential development in investment zones). We will all be promised the opportunity of high paid jobs. Who is going to do the low paid ones? -

Not that I like the bloke but clearly Sunak had a much better grasp on economics. A bit of a lose lose situation, in the likelihood of long term economic damage it's depressing. And should the gamble play off similar thoughts. -
As a general point most find their respective GPs problematic. TJ is fine, get referred there by Forest Hill Rd Group Practice and can't think of any issues.

Anything that gives youth active things to do can help reduce crime. Perhaps go over there and chat to them to challenge your views.

Friends have one and rave, tea spoon if olive oil and hey presto lovely and healthy chips. But similarly very interested what others think

Durex Industrial metal and number steel punches- any ideas of the company?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
What an informative and interesting thread. I wonder where the idea for the original UK brand came from. Obviously in modern times it became synonymous with the principal product. I've got some nice old British tools and there is a stall at Hayes boot sale that sells refurbished ones. Always worth Tring Posh Junk too. These punches seem OK but don't know how durable they would prove -
Advice Needed - Monday to Friday lodger

He/she without sin cast the first stone. I've made mistakes, obviously those of you on their moral high ground haven't I was a great Landlord/lady but not always an ideal tenant. -
I witnessed a women verbally abusing a shop assistant in Lidl, Sydenham. I gave words of comfort to the assistant, who said she was OK. A few weeks ago near Ladywell I asked a woman not to swear in front of her young child. What is the world coming to?

Durex Industrial metal and number steel punches- any ideas of the company?

I think they are cheap imported products that you would have bought in street markets forty years ago, the quality of the printing on the box is poor. On closer reading, the font on the warranty is tiny, made in Taiwan and a PO Box in Montreal. Well that was a nice distraction from the current situation. Wonder why the importer selected the brand name though. -
Advice Needed - Monday to Friday lodger
malumbu replied to HeadNun's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Wow, not a lot of sympathy for the lodger who may have good reason to occasionally need some flexibility. The whole concept of having a part time occupant sounds strange and potentially awkward to me. FYI I did the lodger thing yonks ago, I made some good friends but others I was less fond of. The best was the chap who as well as being in arrears didn't have great personal hygiene. I also lodged with married friends in Havering when I moved to London, not the most harmonious of arrangements and asked to move out after a few weeks. So have seen it from both ends -

Letter stamps -
At the risk of getting myself a yellow card I'm trying to find out who manufactured some metal letter and number punches that I have been given. I know that the London Rubber Company (LRC) made many more products than the well known condom brand (now in the hands of a separate company) inlcuding marigold washing up gloves. From memory they also made rubber 13 amp plugs (obviously electrical ones), the brand now owned by MK electrical. But a steel prouct doesn't sound right, There is a Durex Industries in the US, but they are electrical control equipment in manufacturing. Not got any further on Google beyond interesting reading on the LRC product they are most well known for (an exemplory employer onced manufaturing in Chingford). Plenty of opportunities for meriment. Although not my intention. They are 1/8 inch, I'm after 6mm or quarter of an inch for a classic car commission number plate, if there are any of you with a set in your shed. You are welcome to my collection! Is there a prize for the most surreal or unusual thread?

Lime bikes (and other hire companies) left in middle of pavement
malumbu replied to first mate's topic in Roads & Transport
And a third of the Pakistani population being subject to biblical flooding us not a bigger issue? If you are truly worried about the blind, disabled and elderly's welfare then surely ban everything that moves. -

Anyone used one? I am sure that there are many responsible users and it would be good to hear from one of them. Personally I have bigger things to rant about such as climate change. If e bikes are one of the solutions I'm happy to put up with some teething problems. E scooters also have a role to play but difficult to integrate on our current road network. -
It's the Express, it's not a serious paper, nobody important reads it and it has little influence unlike 80 years ago. The Mail, which happily turns on those it once supported is another issue feeding Twitter, Facebook and the like, so touches many who never read old school media. Still an amusing post though!

As said this thread was future proofed. Well at least for the while. Going back to the outgoing PM, he had a wacking great majority, he had the opportunity to bring the country together, he didn't No great expectation that the incomer will change this.

Had a rare drive yesterday. My friends on other threads know that my main form of transport is pushbike. On my scientific study of one sample I'm struggling to understand what the fuss is about

Wow, with the Tory media, most of her MPs and the accepted view that was a foregone conclusion hardly a landslide.

Whoever is buying gas wholesale has to pay the market price whether it be government or the energy suppliers. Ofgem is there to make markets work. National Grid to ensure security of supplies. It works that is why your lights stay on and your boiler works. It would only make sense to nationalise production and supply if the UK was self sufficient which it hasn't been since the mid noughties. As far as I am aware the state hasn't owned North sea oil and gas, rather it licensed exploration and extraction. Britoil was a national company but privatised in the 80s. The mistakes were made over many successive governments as I have harped on about, starting with Thatcher. Coal was being phased out due to sulphur dioxide (remember acid rain?) Requiring old stations to need expensive modification and her hatred of the NUM and its members. She was passionate about nuclear, planned four new state built and operated nuclear power stations, only one was built, Sizewell B. The heavy capital costs, long return on investment, waste disposal and management and other liabilities meant the private sector would not take this on without a large bung. So hey ho she saw gas as the quick fix. Many of the population agreed as their share portfolios went up. Successive governments did not help but the seeds were laid down by her. I wrote to government, even before Ukraine, asking ministers to admit to Thatch's mistake, but only got a response after I went through my MP. I felt a bit bad for the civil servants drafting the reply as I know more about historic energy markets and of course they have to use the standard anodyne response bigging up Johnson. None of this helps solve the problem but I wish Panorama or similar would run a story along these lines. Hydrocarbon production isn't a free market as most is owned by dodgy states, dodgy Princes and dodgy Oligarchs.
