Annoying words that have cropped up in our language

Net zero -
And take the wheels off so they can't clamp you.

My initial response was feeling rather underwhelmed. I need to digest this further. I see it has already been bumped down the BEEB's on-line headlines, as Mo Salah's late goal is more important than the climate crisis (interestingly of course he presented one of the awards on that Climate Change Challenge) Transport seems a rehash of the 2018 Road to Zero strategy - still relying on electric cars rather than reducing demand and more efficient use of vehicles. The middle and upper classes have benefited from subsidies to the cost of EVs, and we no longer need to throw money at reducing the purchase price to grow the market. Maximum average CO2 emissions for the manufacturers, set by the EU, are the way to push manufacturers harder, but we have opted out of this now. Funding is small say compared to how much was spent on test and trace If a bi-product is more jobs/greater wealth then great, but don't make this a pre-condition of tackling the climate crisis. As Stern said 30 years ago if we don't tackle climate change we will not have an economy. I'll need to find out what they said about building insulation - nowt in the BBC report. Go to Scandinavia where they had high standards on insulation tens of years ago, and it is shocking compared to the vast majority of our properties which have very poor insulation. I'd love to know if anyone has insulated their older property, it feels like a massive step, and the houses I have seen are poorly finished so you can see all the joints in the external cladding. From the CCC (albeit a few years ago): In 2012, direct buildings emissions (mainly from the use of gas for heating) accounted for 37% of UK greenhouse gas emissions (91 MtCO2). Buildings also were responsible for 67% of electricity consumption and related (i.e. indirect) emissions. In our 2010 advice on the fourth carbon budget, we suggested that the cost-effective path to the 2050 target involved direct emission reductions in buildings of 36% by 2025 and 53% by 2030 from 2007 levels. Measures to achieve these reductions included increased home insulation (in particular solid wall insulation), widespread deployment of heat pumps in both residential and non-residential sectors, as well as bioenergy and district heating from low-carbon sources. Edited - the Heating and Building Strategy is not a strategy, it is long winded (200 pages) and anodyne - bit like our PM! https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1026507/heat-buildings-strategy.pdf There is brief mention in the even longer net zero strategy, but no apparent commitments (I have seen somewhere about a ?400m fund for houses, but again no detail). https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1026655/net-zero-strategy.pdf It's enough to make you want to superglue yourself to the M25

Shredded paper in garden recycling
malumbu replied to oimissus's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It shouldn't go into your recycled waste bin as the machines don't like it - something about sipping through the gaps when the paper is being processed. I put load of brown cardboard, tissues (which shouldn't go into recycling) and my personal papers into the compost bin. There should be a fair amount of this sort of stuff in there anyway. If you leave paper in the garden for a couple of weeks you will see how much the snails and slugs like it. -
Rye Lane reopening to buses, but permanent closure still looms
malumbu replied to IainJ's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've not taken a lot of notice recently bur I cycled down Rye Lane today and there were buses on it. Brief thoughts. 1. I liked the idea of vehicle free but it needed to be made more like a pedestrian precinct, businesses out on the street and the like. There would have needed to be some way of demarcation of a cycle lane, and traffic calming (as much as I hate this for bikes). I think this is a missed opportunity. There could be solutions for getting those most in need from the displaced buses to the station. 2. Funnily enough it felt safer with the buses, as I kept pace with them and pedestrians were no longer walking out in front of me 3. This depends on other vehicle using the Lane. I commuted down in for 20 years and it continually peed me off that there was so much double yellow line parking, and what appeared little parking enforcement. Buses would not be able to pass each other delaying bus times, and making it slower and more hazardous for cyclists. I hope it continues to be largely free of other motorised vehicles. 4. The clever clogs amongst you talk about parallel routes for cyclists. I don't know what these are (back to my 20 years of commuting). I could go via the Rye and Nunhead if heading, say for Queens Road Peckham Station, but don't see any advantages of going via Bellenden. Do educate me 5. In my early years in London I never went to Peckham. I had this real dodgy route via Loughborough Junction and the Brixton Road (far more dangerous than the OKR) which I learned when I first moved here. It was only when one of my colleagues left for work at the same time and beat me in I checked out my current route, and found it was straighter and flatter (hardly surprising as much of it follows an old canal). And I discovered that Peckham was not the dangerous place I was led to believe and have grown to like it since. -
Ah, so you are saying that if cars have jumpers then they will not get caught by the cameras. Nice one. Those identifying themselves with the male gender could have B011OXS on the car jumper - that will confuse TFL as I know that the killjoys at DVLA never released this registration for sale Those identifying themselves with the female gender could have B008IES on their car jumper, I saw a similar plate in a car park once, but again it seems as if the killjoys didn't release this either Others could come up with registration numbers for other choices of gender (or sex if that is how I should have termed it).

Just step back please. A bit of an over-reaction. I've probably been insulted more than most, but I don't feel this has been that extreme and I don't find the area an unpleasant place to live (and certainly no more or no less self righteous that it was before - that's a facetious comment before anyone gets uppity.) OK, back to my retirement from this thread. I stay clear of Twitter.

Deffo - I like this but others may not Bostin, one from my youth (again I like it) - means brill (sorry brilliant) -
I think that microchipping people would be the best way forward and understand government is speaking to Bill Gates about how this could be achieved through fabricating a pandemic, and then a national vaccination programme where a chip could be hidden in the vaccine. Remember, I told you first.....

Highest percentage of empty properties are in the City, generally the article gives total numbers rather than proportion. It may be due to Covid or other reasons, rather than money laundering etc. ID cards would make it easier to identify who owned buildings, and could be extended to off shore enterprises. Or an easier solution could be a one party state. Deffo in Lounge territory now.

What you will have to do is drive your car to a one way street that either leaves or enters the ULEZ zone, then push it. Like pushing a powered two wheeler it is no longer a car but a pedestrian so you wont be charged.

I was referring to buildings lying empty when there is a housing crisis. It may be an urban myth that most of the apartments are empty in Vauxhall Cross, the UK being seen by oligarchs and the like as a safe place to put money, but there must be some truth to this. This recent article suggests ?15B of empty property in the capital, some of worst offenders being the City of London and Southwark - I expect for the latter central real estate rather than more suburban. https://www.cityam.com/15bn-worth-of-london-homes-sit-empty-as-londoners-squabble-over-supply/ I acknowledged already that I was straying off thread.

If you need help with house and garden jobs try the charity Linkage Southwark. https://www.linkagesouthwark.org/

It sounds purely civil to me ie nothing to do with the police and as such a highly sophisticated scam. There is stuff on line from the Traffic Criminal Justice Unit - it seems to take forever for them to take any action. We got one once which requested payment for the congestion charge - a smaller amount than it actually is, for a car that had not been in the zone, and not registered in any case to the person they contacted. There's no doubt lots of info on all of us that is sold on to scamsters.
-
In deed, you can travel in and out of the congestion charge zone as much as you like on one day, and just pay the one charge. Some with non-compliant cars may to decide to combine journeys and do it on a limited number of days.
-
If you live within the North or South Circulars and drive you will pay a daily charge of ?12.50, if your car is Diesel registered before September 2015 (September 2014 for a few models). Older petrol cars are free if they were registered from 2006 although some older than this may be OK. Google ULEZ extension and it will tell you all, including checking your number plate if you are unsure if you pay or not.

I'm just a fan of pubs, well certain ones. I don't live in Nunhead but I love the Ivy. The Blythe is terrific. I used to like the Clock and the Dulwich Woodhouse but sadly the Youngs Estate is very different to when they were tied houses. Ladywell is not far away. Antic ran the Ravensbourne so I expect owned it. I don't think that they can be readily compared to the Dulwich Estate even if the impact is the same.

It's the Lounge for discussing wider issues, but even the ED part of this site often goes wider.

The going home for the weekend song thread...come on you groovey foookers
malumbu replied to ????'s topic in The Lounge
And seeing the demo at Court Lane junction today - wish I had been there (Rock Against Racism at Victoria Park) -
Pick your battles - amending the NI protocol was a bit of a damp squib. The Mail and Torygraph will no doubt see this as a great victory for GB (not sure if I can include NI) following gunboat diplomacy. Much of the EU has more important things to worry about.

Perhaps you didn't notice that there were 7399 posts on the thread below, about 95% of them against LTNs. -
But the reality is this country is overpopulated (as the world is as a whole) and to feed billions of people we need intensive agriculture. Growing fodder for animals is another issue. Back to "let them eat cake" discussion (which she didn't actually say....)

You've missed the point of this thread Seabag - the masses cannot afford to source their food from places such as Borough Market. Someone there suggested that government should compel people to do this. On your points food markets in France, Spain (and no doubt some other European countries) seem to have got it right and have mass appeal, it is always a pleasure shopping in these places. Some of our markets and farmers markets here are getting there - Herne Hill appears a particularly good one. I'm still shocked at being 'mugged' at a fresh pasta stall in South Ken, fortunately I stopped at buying sauce, as this is simple enough to make yourself. And based on Gennaro Contaldo recipes I'll be making more of my own fresh pasta and saving myself ?20.
