Sinclair calculator I thank you - one of the first affordable mass produced models. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinclair_Cambridge A true innovator, and the C5 was just ahead of its time (sadly neither having the demand, or the appropriate technology)

Well blow me down, the reshuffle has brought in an even worse set whilst keeping the 'evil' one. There are two or three that I don't know but as for the others... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58574180 And for balance I probably couldn't name most of the shadow cabinet. Geof Norcott's poltics are diagmetrically opposed to mine, but a very amusing perspective, including Labour and Starmer being gutless, on Radio 4 yesterday https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000vhln I think my thread title is not the best but it is late

ULEZ - EURO 6 Conversion for Diesal car anyone?
malumbu replied to [email protected]'s topic in The Lounge
No can't be done for cars. The chemistry kit needed to reduce nitrogen dioxide to nitrogen will not fit in earlier vehicles. It is a holly grail. Putting a new Euro 6 engine would be sillily expensive. It is worth doing it to buses as they are on the road for maybe 30 years - I was involved in a retrofit project - and there is loads of space to put in the catalyst. Not sure why it is stated retrofitting started in 2017 as this was three years early. Also don't know why the then Mayor continued to buy Euro V buses rather than Euro VI which were just round the corner. He was rubbish in lots of respects https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/114969/tfl-bus-emissions/ https://www.london.gov.uk/questions/2014/4205 LPG retrofits never took off, there was a company offering it for taxis when they brought in the Low Emission Zone a few years ago. LPG conversions worked for big petrol engines - mainly Land Rovers, which were dreadfully inefficient, but that was decades ago before the new generation of diesels came on board. LPG conversion of diesels is almost undoable as spark ignition is very different to compression ignition. Interestingly enough you can convert older motorbikes to be ULEZ compliant. -

Perhaps reread my post. If I posted something emotive and factual I am accused of being a troll. If I am careful and post something informative and make some sensible suggestions about how we can have a rational discussion I am accused of being patronising and a troll. I can't win! Oh credit to the poster who did read my post, disagree but in a measured way.

Accident on lordship lane today around 4pm
malumbu replied to sweetgirl's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was involved in a hit and run 25 years ago on Red Post Hill when a speeding car drove into me from behind knocking me into a parked car. I was fortunate not to be killed and the bike took most of the impact. The owner of the parked car I hit came out, wasn't bothered about the minor dent and drove me and the wrecked bike home. I think the perpetrator drove round the block to see that I wasn't dead and then drove off again. I've got the first letter of the registration and model, and see a similar (now classic car) in the area. Not that I can do anything. Anyway more importantly you are covered by the motor insurance bureau, a slush fund for uninsured drivers (including those that don't stop). You didn't ask to be knocked down but do seek some compensation. Do PM me about my experience (I was compensated) https://www.mib.org.uk/ I hope there are witnesses. -
I'm not getting any hint of anyone saying that it is not racist, and even better anyone posting their (negative) views about travelers. Yes there is stuff that society needs to resolve, but you can say that about every demographic. Thinking about why it seems to many to be acceptable - (a) it is not a pejorative terms that we 'may' be able to use in banter - eg jocks, limies, poms, taffs, paddies etc, particularly if that group uses the term themselves (b) it is not one of ignorance - in America 'oriental' is a slur word but not so in the UK, and similarly many innocently used the term coloured until a few decades ago again not realising how offensive this was in other countries © how much of a case is this that things need to progress in the same way that it was acceptable to make 'puff' jokes on the media 30 years ago, and twenty years ago 'trannie' jokes. Little Britain being a great case in point where Lucas/Walliams feel some characters are in retrospect just wrong. Perhaps as much as this getting into the national lingo (only gay in the village, I'm a lady). Heavens I am getting a bit deep tonight. But always good to self reflect. Oh and the group also make the odd casual racist comment, and less casual sexist comments. Age certainly is no excuse. I'm now posting on the song for the weekend thread.

Some general points 1. It would be helpful if you didn't quote the whole of a previous poster's message as it clogs up the thread 2. Neither do I go for the like/dislike a post suggestion to get round 1. If you don't have anything substantive to add then please consider the value of posting (oh "I agree with so and so's post") 3. Selectively quoting friends who live outside the area not traveling to SE22 is confirmation bias. I live slightly outside the area (two streets) and I still travel to the area therefore the LTN is justified. Of course if your friends are no longer traveling to SE22 that could be a good thing, showing that the LTN is doing its job - encouraging less unnecessary car journeys, people using public transport more, shopping and socialising locally. That is of course my confirmation bias. 4. Really good points on home deliveries. I detest the 'need it now' (rather than plan ahead) mentality being encouraged by Amazon Prime and some of the new micro-delivery sites. The latter can be a modern day butchers boy thing, which may be a good thing for small local businesses. But "I have no toilet paper and must order now" - for heavens sake, go to your local convenience store, knock on a neighbour's door or use your street whats app. I am sure we are all on one. A separate Lounge discussion I expect.

I've got a group of colleague who constantly use this term referring to Romany/travelers and the like - very much in a pejorative way. At times it feels like a talking black top newspaper. I'm increasingly more uncomfortable with this - questioning whether it is casual racism and of course why I am not challenging this. I was at the Oval last week for the test match and impressed with their list of groups where 'hate crime' was not tolerated. I didn't do the "oh political correctness gone mad" but considered it right and appropriate. So a quick Google search brought up two links which suggest the use of this term is racist. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7446274.stm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikey Although I also understand that when Clarkson was reported for using it, an investigation found that it wasn't racist. There is of course no smoke without fire, and some of the traveling community have not endeared themselves with middle England. Me? I think that the problems are overstated and some seem to be very preoccupied with this, when there are bigger issues to worry about in our society. Serious views please, don't make light of this.

Enjoyed match and very joyed by the result. the Oscars stuff at the end was awful, and the presentation of the billion pound cheque crass. Both players spoke well, the whole presentation could have been made short and sweet.

And we can't be London United as that is a bus company and was a tram company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_United_Tramways

Hmm, I don't think cross dressing exists. People can wear what they want - unless functional like a jock strap or a bra, and even then it is not wrong, just different. The term transvestite is from the last millennium, and/or the Rocky Horror Show.

Getting out of hand? You mean over 6000 posts, the challenges of having a rational discussion without people going off on one, throwing round the "T" word and the like. Sorry I've just added another unnecessary post, maybe I am 'T'ing myself.

Good CCTV at Lidl in Peckham. No signs up either saying that there is safe bike parking, or that this is at the owners own risk, but a camera and a sign (not aimed at cyclists but conveniently where they are parked) is a good thing. Shame more shops don't have some sort of secure bike parking, there are ones where I take it in with me (thanks places such as Wickes and Decathlon). Sorry Sue for hijacking but in my defence I did have a thread at the beginning of the year about the ULEZ and private car ownership.

Hopefully the Outer boroughs would stay in the Union - England and whoever is left. Whoops, strayed into controversial territory.

Ahh Fernox, always keep some with me but use it on leaking copper pipework.

Abe rather than slinging the T word at me why not get some bike training as I suggested. Not sure of the age of your kids but they can do Bikeability through school from Year 4. The more safe and confident cyclists on the road the better.

Not really sure why a number of you are going off at a tangent and talking about cycle safety. So LTNs are to discourage driving, reducing the number of vehicles and in turn carbon emissions (climate change) and pollution emissions (improved air quality). If successful they will make those areas more pleasant for other road users. By all means discuss whether they work, the downsides/unintended consequences, alternatives and the like. The main danger for cyclists is other drivers. If drivers had it beaten (metaphorically) into them that the Highway code gives equal priority to all road users it would be safer for cyclists. I've cycled in the area for decades but not noticed any step change in driver behaviour. Many are of course respectful and courteous, and as pointed out many cyclists are also car drivers. Yet many consider cyclists don't have the same rights. The 20mph should have been that step change but yet to be convinced. No excuse saying - oh they were angry due to traffic controls and delays so accidentally drove into a cyclist. My view is that there should be much better sharing of space and not the need for more segregation. Although I have long lost that argument with the authorities. Happy to chat in more depth on the Lounge if you would like to join me there. My mate failed his driving test at the age of 18 one reason driving too fast in a pedestrian area (within the speed limit but the examiner considered that he was not being courteous. My instructor embedded give cyclist 6' (2 metres) in my mind. If you are a cyclist concerned about cycling in traffic, want to be generally more confident or get back on a bike there are free lessons in Southwark and other boroughs. Fully recommended https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/free-cycle-training-for-all-is-back/

Raising NI is preferable (or does less political damage) than raisin income tax. It may be wrong, but that wont nake any difference unless there is a significant rebellion.

Fibreglass will do it - get some from Halfords - you can use a tin with acivator or be more sophisticated and use the mesh. https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/fillers-and-preparation/davids-isopon-p40-kit-250ml-194746.html You wont get a pretty repair. You can get repair tape from Toolstation etc eg https://uk.gorillaglue.com/gorilla-waterproof-patch-seal-tape/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_9-A7uns8gIVj5ftCh3WMwz3EAAYASAAEgL7u_D_BwE And this looks the best value https://www.screwfix.com/p/self-amalgamating-rubber-tape-black-3m-x-25mm/2115v Tape less messy than fibreglass

My word First Mate, we seem to be on the same page. I hope you didn't call me patronising, but I know others did, after a very careful factual post I made a few weeks ago. Perhaps reread your response at the time. I'm not sure what the point about a cyclist misbehaving is or whether it is better of worse that the road rage I have experienced in the past both as a pedestrian or cyclist. The thread moves on so quickly. Sorry I have not added any substance on this occasion. OK, back off to the Lounge to discuss cricket and music.

Did get in today, a few tickets went of resale, had an excellent seat, dead excited but now totally deflated at the nature of the defeat. I'm normally more philosophical about cricket but had anticipated a great escape... Good that they played that wonderful socialist anthem Jerusalem though.
