  1. Greenwich then onto Woolwich along Thames, foot tunnel, onto Greenway (with a nice view to the airport), over to Olympic Park. River Lea to the Thames, through Wappping, onto Tower Bridge then back via Quietway 1, canal path and into Peckham

Rough only had a number of days storage, with the medium and short term storage facilities this would keep us going in a severe shortage for example in the past when we lost some North Sea production in extreme weather. In this situation high wholesale prices would lead to some businesses ceasing production, and ultimately there are those on interruptible contracts that can be temporarily cut off. This was from a good ten years ago before the whopping great inter-connectors were built with Norway - who has huge reserves and we are a natural customer. I was involved in planning for shortages but this was another decade and of course very different to 2021. Personally I'd never privatise anything but plenty of my friends did well as Thatcher, then even more under Major, and continued by Blair, sold off our national industries. I used to work with people in the old CEGB, and those building our new power stations, and recall some lovely redundancy deals in the 90s, when the UK decided (or the market decided) we didn't want this capability. Rough was filled at relatively low wholesale prices and used when prices were high. But this is all 30 years ago and I don't know how it would have all panned out if we hadn't sold off our state owned enterprises. The work that I did considered large disruption and keeping essential services going, and stopping people freezing to death. We are not in a three day week situation quite yet but I am surprised there is not more resilience in CO2 supplies.

Well I believe in both causes - reducing transport emissions and reducing emissions from our antiquated housing stock by improved insulation. Not the means for insulate, and I will let the rest of you discuss Southwark's means as my principle view is there has to be some pain for motorists. Roll on COP 26.   6. Still felt happier when the energy sector was run by the state. So strange that the state operator in France (EDF) is providing much of our energy both as a generator and retailer. Such a bad decision by Thatch to turn her back on nuclear (big supporter of nuclear in 87, in 89 announced we were a country of clean energy, we were a country of gas - so little of this in our history books but I was there as the time. And after 35 years of telling us that we must have competition, shop around for the best deal as this would lead to more efficient supply of utilities, now many of us have the issue that our supplier has or will go bust (any views on Zebra energy?).
  7. To try and bring a bit of balance there will always be some subjectivity in a consultation. Do you want to reduce pollution/address climate change (overwhelmingly "yes"). Are you prepared to be inconvenienced (overwhelmingly "no"). I'm not going to change the minds of the masses, but have avoided personal comment throughout this debate (but have been subject to many against me), so please respect my point of view even though very different to most. Separately there is a lot of passion here, and at times I think that this could be directed towards much bigger issues - inequality, social justice, the environment (please add additional wider issues, we are living in challenging and volatile times geopolitically.

Revenue from Fixed Penalty Notices is small compared to overall council spending and you could apply accusations to say parking fines too. There is a bigger discussion about proportionality and leniency - I can get stopped by the police for speeding but let off with a warning, but there is no such thing for camera enforcement of any kind beyond speed awareness course. I've fought a few FPNs in the past, many I thought were unjust or for relatively benign offences but in more recent years done my damned hardest to avoid them. This thread of course is very helpful for knowing about new restrictions. There are other threads about people receiving fines and challenging them. It's also good to get alternative views, I think most of us who support the principle of measures to discourage driving are no longer posting as this thread is dominated by those vehemently objecting to them.
  9. It's cost not supply - we produce about half our own gas and are plugged into the Norweigian fields through interconnectors. The Norweigians took a stategic decision not to sell or burn or their gas - helped of course by producing their electricity from hydro. It all went wrong when Thatcher privatised the market, but of course many were happy to get rich quickly. She did an about turn on nuclear otherwise we would be like France. Instead we burned much of our gas to produce electricity. We were ahead of the game on renewables 30 or 40 years ago. Privatising the market meant we lost much of our expertise and capability, but some still remains. The Chinese took the opportunity to expand in energy markets. I worked in energy markets a few years ago, nuclear before that, and in more recent years transport. Turned me into a bit of a bore!
  10. Hmmm, HJS retrofit buses, didn't think they had miniaturised the kit to fit to cars but perhaps the Land Rover affords enough space to do this. I'll have a chat to my vehicle engineer mates. Not sure what the other point is - the Euro VI standard for heavy vehicles introduced about 8 years ago sorted out many of the problems, cars were a little later catching up and the VW debacle actually helped in strengthening the authorities' hand. Nice to have a proper chat about pollution and the like!
  11. Have you alerted anyone in authority. OK I don't expect the police to come out, and the council are unlikely to do similar at the weekend, but it would be more useful to do than posting on a community website. By all means start a thread on the lounge, as many of us would be happy to join in with our stories (mine in the banqueting hall on Perry Vale where I have tried directly and through the MP to get better enforcement). By chance I did find a cop car one cay but they were disinterested. Sadly many motorists feel the entitlement to drive what they want, where they want, when they want and how they want. Similar can be applied to parking. You can always leave a note something like subtle like "you selfish barstool". There were some very sticky ones you could buy once but probably all this would do it cause confrontation, no matter how tempting it would be. I've just done a search for an official looking note, but just came up with lots of passive aggressive ones. Presser, the recently coined term for press conferences, urghh But some words quickly become part of our lexicon, I remember stakeholder which I first heard used extensively by the new Blair government. At the time I thought that it meant vampire hunters.

  17. I stopped myself posting this morning as that could pour gasoline on the fire. But two of you have been brave enough to post some alternative views. The question that I was planning to put out earlier - there has been some movement from Southwark, surely there are some elements that are acceptable to some of you? I'd value a measured response to this rather than abuse. Thanks in advance.
  18. The article is about upcycling a hybrid that has been written off, rather than a conventional internal combustion engine car (hence my point about fantasy). I'll get an informed view from my engineer mates, but expect that this is very niche and certainly not mass market.
  19. That's fantasy as well. I went in a converted mini on a track day (the original mini) and this was 10's of 1000s to convert. If there was a simple solution like this, then the authorities would have grabbed it. PS the mini, as opposed to say the Nissan Leaf, was so wrong. It felt like a 50 year old car, which it was.
  20. The link to Brenchley Gardens doesn't work for me. There is already traffic calming which doesn't work. The average speed (26mph) is that at the cameras, rather than the road itself. Most will slow down for the cameras ad many will be exceeding 40mpy. Brenchley Gardens shows that most motorists couldn't give a T about speed limits and safer driving. Average speed cameras are the only solution This is not particularly relevant to LTNs - beyond my point about motorists' entitlement, which I expect does not apply to most posting on this thread.
  21. There was always going to be winners. Some made zillions straight away on the markets. It's whether it is in the nation's overall interests, which covers many factors. Many around here would include softer stuff like being outward facing. Happily having a young mobile workforce, many happy to do some of the poorly paid work, particularly in the capital. I get most of my info from the Archers and Countryfile. The former "oh dear Australia deal", the latter "here are some Eastern Europeans doing the manual work, and here is an Eastern European doing the skilled work". Both programmes are of course gospel.

Two versions on the app, a single QR code for domestic, and a double one for international - if you have a paper copy don;t mix them p, fortunately there was good signal so I could bring it up on the ferry port but squeaky bum time! Funny in this paperless world sometimes you need the comfort of paper.
  24. How on earth did we manage to move to metric units for wine, spirits, mixers, dairy food etc? We even managed to switch from gallons to litres for fuel, cubic metres not feet for gas, Kilowatts/KWh for electricity etc. A couple of exceptions are no case to going backwards. I'll happily live with a half a litre of beer if they put down the prices accordingly.
  25. Oh for christsake. Let this be a wind up. I'm no spring chicken but I learned in the metric system and there is no reason to keep or revert back to some nonsensical system. I've put threads up on this subject before. Surely we are not that backward. If so we may as well go back to LSD, that is the old money not the drug, but I think that I'd need this!
