The tanner (6d/2.5p) was removed from circulation in 1980. We still used the old shilling and two shillings until they reduced the size of the 5p and 10p in 1990 and 1992 respectively. The old shillings before 1947 I recall were worth more in the silver content then monetary value and therefore effectively removed from circulation many years earlier as they would have been melted down. There was a strong case for moving to a new pound that was half the old pound to make it easier when we went decimal, but the government at the time (Wilson) shelved this as it would have been a PR disaster.

I was taking stacks of change to the bank before lockdown. I know many who used to empty their pockets into a bowl, but never cash it in. There must be ?100 millions like this across the country. Bring in back of the sofa..... Car..... fallen behind the drawers.....

Which begs the question why don't you all vote with your feet and join anther practice? Simples.

help! fine for parking in Tessa Jowell Centre!
malumbu replied to Huggers's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sorry for your distress Huggers. And thanks for keeping your post rational and factual. From the perspective of someone who has had a few tickets over the years I found that you have to be philosophical and take it on the chin. But it took me decades to reach this position! I've fought tickets in the past but never won - went through to an appeals to be told that they agreed with me that it was an innocent error (signage, ownership of the car park, time of day, weather) it was still properly issued. If you consider that the signage could be improved contact them with positive suggestions - whilst old fashioned from time to time I still send a letter as unlike web based/e-mail more likely to be read (I'm talking about you BBC). My personal view also depends on the size of the penalty - up to ?40 it is "oh well", above that I question whether it is proportionate. Contacting the health trust, MP or whoever could be worthwhile. There was a commitment in the last Cameron manifesto to tackle excessive parking fees, I expect that this was aimed at the private clampers. I was clamped once, I digress. Writing to your MP asking them to take action about penalties that are excessive may be worthwhile, although not sure how high this is on the political agenda at the moment. Lot of interest on NHS parking fees before election. There is a political point on proportionality in that a bigger agenda should be ensuring better driving standards - it's 'OK' to drive dangerously but if you park in the wrong place, woe betide you. I separately had a battle with another local authority about parking enforcement - most seems to be 9 - 5 Monday to Friday, allowing those on a night out to park where they like. Yes, the Banqueting Hall in Forest Hill, I am talking about you (noting this is aimed at the customers, as the business do have signage saying there is a free car park 3 minutes away). -
Reminds me of a chat I had with a colleague a few years ago. Oh we had to move our of this area due to the schools (whilst admitting both partners had gone to a modest state comp). And then we weren't happy with the state schools in our new area (Greenwich) and ended up sending the kids to Alleyns. That was a sample size of one so I expect not everyone who goes to Alleyns lives miles away.

They are filming in Peckham near to the station and one of the bargain shops is having a makeover. Advertising products in the window in pennies, circa early 70s, but a big historical mistake as they have forgotten the 1/2 penny. Which reminds me of how backward we are in getting rid of unwanted denominations. The pre-decimal ha'penny dropped in 1970 would now be worth about 8 pence. So forget the emotional attachment, ditch the copper. I'd say it was again about Island mentality, but the US cent is even more worthless, and ditto the Euro countries (although in Ireland I understand they round up and down to the closest five cents.)

It's a social network/chat room. That's the whole point - discussion and debate. Not sure what your problem is with expressing different experiences. Hopefully we can all come up with a more informed view rather than keep our entrenched views. If we have a problem, then the first people to complain to should be the service provider, rather than be a keyboard warrior. The title of the thread attracts both good and bad experiences. I try to add some balance, even if I play devil's advocate at times. I'm not accusing anyone of lying, but it is always good to challenge views both of ourselves and others.

Some good suggestions but again I don't know why posters have to use some emotive/inflammatory language language. I've never had a surgery where everything ran like clockwork. Memories of a child waiting an hour plus. A walk in service at another surgery not so far away where it could be two hours. Spend anytime in Day Lewis (you'll have to wait in any case for your prescription!) and listen to the chatter with local people. A lot are very fond of the staff there. I understand that some of the difficulties are due to workloads - not an excuse - and I wonder how may rude and impatient clients. Back the suggestions: [bLOCK CAPITALS FOR DIFFERENTIATION, I AM NOT SHOUTING!] 1. Take blood samples rather then all sending patients to Kings or Tessa Jowell. If other local practices can offer this service, why can't FHRGP? THAT IS A NON-RUNNER AS YOU HAVE TO CENTRALISE THESE SERVICES. VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SERVICE AT TJ 2. Offer a walk-in service on a Saturday morning. THAT WOULD BE GOOD 3. Make available more appointments to see the nurses. DITTO 4. Have more Nurse Practioners who can do more than just nursing and can make clinical decisions, they can at the Tessa Jowell, why not at FHRGP? DITTO (the above three will depend on regional and national approach I expect, so suggest you submit views to the practice manager) 5. Offer Vulnerable Patient follow up visits, it can be done elsewhere, why can't FHRGP offer this service? DUNNO 6. Make more use of the local District Nurse service. NOT HEARD OF DISTRICT NURSE SERVICE SINCE I WATCHED OPEN ALL HOURS 7. Don't be so reliant on technology that doesn't work. IN DEED FRUSTRATING 8. Be more flexible, listen to patients and their concerns. AS COMMNENT ABOVE, WRITE TO THE PRACTICE MANAGER 9. Improve communications and sharing of information with Specialists at Kings, Guy's, St. Thomas's (i.e. blood test results) GENERALLY PRETTY GOOD 9. Don't leave the sample collection pot in front of the radiator adjacent to the front door so that it "cooks" the samples. DUNNO

I bought a wood burning fire cowl from Westcombes on Lee High Road. This was before the LTN when I used to rat run between the Ladywell and the A20. I'll just join the traffic on the main road now. Obviously you don't have my sympathy.

Assault on East Dulwich Road Opposite Goose Green Playground
malumbu replied to Jan42's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We should all feel safe to go out of our house, and we live in a city and country with relatively low crime rate. We can all do things to reduce the risks of assault and I expect most of us avoid dark alley ways in run down industrial areas. Any abuse is wrong and I hope society can work together to make the streets even safer. Reporting it to the police will enable them to gather intelligence, so whilst unlikely to take action on a single report, if there is a pattern then they will be on the look out. The Safer Neighbourhood Team has always been very helpful when we have been in similar situations. -
Pampas grass is all the rage. Makes me snigger, as perhaps some younger than me don't realise the significance. But not sure if the "playground for the richest, whitest most privileged population in Southwark" was aimed at me. Bit refreshing as I have been going through my life as an inverted snob with a chip on my shoulder, Reinforced many years ago when I Stopped at Hampton International to enquire about flats in the area. Housing prices were depressed so I may have been able to afford it. As I got back on by bike wet, with a snotty nose, I expect that my enquiry was thrown straight in the bin. If only I had realised that I Was one of them, life could be so different.

I have my own silent disco there. Perhaps join me, we could move onto skates if that's your thing.

The sign looks pretty clear. Perhaps you were not aware as you were following other cars. And as a general point I wish people would stop blathering on about this being used as a ruse to collect money. There's so much of that sentiment going on on the other part of this site. It doesn't help debate. Just to add some balance there are no right turns going from the South Circ into the retail park on Catford Bridge. Years ago I was told that the second of these going into the Halfords car park wasn't operational, so I have been using this. No fines to date but always expecting one.

Kryten is a great supporter of electric cars. He'd probably be hounded out of the East Dulwich local threads, in particular when the Mayor introduces a Zero Emission Zone. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzz4CoEgSgWNs9ZAvRMhW2A

No, I'm also not usually a pleasant plucker, but a pleasant plucker's mate. Introduced species (as many are) and primarily managed for sport so not sure if they count as nature watch. Although Alison Stedman did a Radio 4 series on introduced birds, defending them! (the alien Birds have landed) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01m0lgg Don't think urban foxes eat anything that is alive - more likely to be killed by a cat. The foxes round here just seem to ignore the other wildlife.

The Lib Dem councillor states 'In response to the issues that you have been raising with us about the difficulties of making journeys in the local area, we have been in discussion with highways officers, about what changes could made to the LTN to address these concerns, without negating the intentions of the LTN to discourage rat running and unnecessary short car trips.' So good to see that they still support LTNs, and more of a case of fine tuning. Some on this thread just want the schemes removed. To go back, again(sigh), to pollution, it feels as if some of you only became aware of this in the last few months. Others, like me, have been campaigning and taking action for years. If it is important to you, rather than just a convenient stick to beat Southwark/LTNs, then please reduce the amount of driving, unnecessary deliveries etc etc.

Out of interest does anyone posting on this thread have anything good to say about PV panels? It comes across as having an agenda that you are going to hate them come what may. There appear to be a lot around and here's some good advice: https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/advice/solar-panels/ Some of the posts appear to be rather luddite. Or maybe it's the opportunity to have a good moan! Modern life eh? Those young people with their little computers in their hands. Jumpers for goalposts....

If people didn't read it the press wouldn't publish it. If people didn't watch the interview, then there would be no interview. We have the press that society deserves. Twitter and other social media have simply made this worse. Having said that previous generations loved a good story, for examples the Victorians were fascinated by murder. Not sure if that applied to everyone at that time.

Has good days has bad, I've stayed there, others move. There is a complaints process. A general message when discussing any service provided is to avoid comments that could be seen as defamatory. "dissapointed" is fine, "crap". is rather judgmental.

Went on some personal security/safeguarding training when working on the Olympics - Pudding Mill Lane DLR station is in a dark alley and 12 years ago few people around. As construction was 24/7 there were a lot of comings and goings in the wee hours. We were taught on how to avoid risk, rather than punch our way out of it. More relevant was that we were handed out rape alarms - maybe this what your mobile can do now, but it was one hell of a deterrent. Most on the course were hairy arsed builders but I don't recall any talking about punching anyone's light out.

Don't look at Twitter as a rule but Shaun Bailey appears to be another populist. Never mind the quality of the argument feel the width (superficial).

I find that the drugs don't work. Damn, got an earworm now.....

Ted, you sound like a thug. Please give me your description so I know to avoid you. Are you Palace or Millwall? Again useful to know for when the grounds are open again. I too have stories about intervening in similar situations. But I managed to calm things down without having to hit anyone. Although there is the danger that both parties then turn on you.....
