  1. No, but you might want to ask for heavier duty paper if the ceiling is not reasonble. Or go to night school and learn to DIY. In one respect ceilings are easier as you are just doing one plane, with no things like light switches or door ways to go around. Do you want me to PM you a recommendation?

Ironic that Theresa May campaigned to change the image of being the 'nasty' party, which is exactly what BJ is doing now, whether by clever design or blunderbuss (or a mixture of both). Quite liked that Rory Steward.

What a loathsome man. That's BJ not Trump or Jezzer. To be correct I should say what a loathsome person, although he is displaying many characteristics or a boorish male from the upper echelons. Struth, Dave and Theresa ended up as disasters but they had some civility and class. As for Jezzer, far more transparent and an easy target for many of us and the right wing press. Just amazes me that middle England can not see BJ for the duplicitous, self-serving, arrogant human being he is. Rest of his family seem quite nice!
  4. Time Out would not take adverts from married men on their lonely hearts page in the 1970s. Times have changed. For younger readers Time Out was a compendium of weekly activities in London, the size of a telephone directory. Oh, what is a telephone directory...

laserdiscs? Did anyone ever have a player? They came and went in about a week. We had some GIS's at work (Google that too - I came up with this

Neither a party nor a special viewing - one crisp each and a glass of wine. But in my short time there it was interesting to hear how many of the big draws are now ticket only. Old Bailey apparently sold out in ten mins. Next year as said I will go somewhere very different.
  7. Odd thread. I changed all the bulbs in the house with LED ones from Scfewfix a two years ago. Light much better than those dreadful CFL ones - now there was a mistake from the EU (although I wouldn't leave because of that). The LED bulbs were not one of the big brands. If you've used in incandescent bulb in recent times you'll realise why they were banned. You can cook toast bread on them and you can smell the stink as they burn through the light fitting. Someone before the referendum complained about not being able to use coloured incandescent bulbs any more. Surprise surprise you can get coloured LED ones. I'm sure that someone will still complain about the quality of the colour given out.
  8. The Master Shipwrights house in Deptford where I volunteered was most wonderful. I popped into a studio for five mins on the way home but most places seem to be kitchen extensions on Victorian properties. I can see plenty of those at artist's Open House, but avoiding the architect, I'm a regular at Walters Way and also visited the Segal house itself in Sydenham on one Open House. I'll go well out of borough next year.
  9. Any tips near by? I'm volunteering but feel I've seen many of the interesting places in nearby boroughs, and all the new ones seem to be trendy extensions in Victorian houses which is now getting a bit dull. I did do the CHP place (interesting but pooey)
  10. To digress 20 years ago I was knocked down whilst cycling on Red Post Hill at some speed (separate to the box van on Kirkdale above). I was fortunate not to be killed let alone seriously injured. The Motor Insurance Bureau got involved and I received compensation for a hit and run. The owner of the parked car that I was knocked into kindly told me not to worry about the dent in his bumper and drove me and the bike home. Another driver was a witness. The police called and were friendly. Whilst I was being helped up another driver turned up in a flash Merc, asked if I was alright and said he'd seen the whole thing. And then drove off. I'm convinced that he was the person who hit me. But no proof. Imagine my surprise when I see an old Merc in the area nowadays matching the one that turned up at the time. Obviously I have no proof or took the registration at the time - the person who hit me sped of PDQ and I didn't take details of the person who turned up whether they were or weren't the perpetrator. Anyway could all be a coincidence and nothing I could do about it in any case. No BBC documentary with Ross Kemp for me.
  11. My understanding is that you did need to provide your details in an accident. Highway Codes states: If you have an accident causing damage or injury you must give the following to anyone with ?reasonable grounds for requiring them,? for example an insurance company: your name and address the vehicle registration number You must report the accident to the police within 24 hours if you don?t give your details at the time of the accident. I assume that the other party involved, where they are not at fault, has reasonable grounds. I got knocked off my bike years ago, the driver stopped, told me I was OK and then drove on. The Old Bill got quite excited when I told them and were upset that it wasn't a hit and run.
  12. Damn, you were making a statement of fact Hemingway not expressing an opinion. Apologies. I saw DHFC vs Millwall in a friendly about 16 years ago, about 2000 there, mainly Millwall, with a jolly enough atmosphere. One of the Dulwich players upset the Millwall fans who started goading him. Good, they have someone to hate now, said my Millwall mate. It was a comedy moment, not nasty. It is a stonkingly wonderful sunset tonight. Reminds me of my only trip to the Old Den, a 1-1 draw with Wolves (they had the Tipton Skin aka Stevie Bull to hate that day with a twice taken penalty). The highlight of that November match was the wonderful sunset. Trouble not a patch on what it was 40 years ago. I managed to sidestep most of that, and generally the stuff in the ground, and from my experience all the big London teams did it most, was a 100 or so trendily dressed guys (casuals with no colours) in their twenties, would stand in the home end, look for a chance to make some noise and then get chased by the home fans. Again I'd side step it. Be led round the pitch to receive a heroes welcome from the away end. Much worse things happened elsewhere. But then again when I first came to London there would be regular punch ups outside pubs in Streatham and Sydenham. Society has changed in many ways. From that time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Firm_(1989_film) Steve McFadden is in it, whilst the other Mitchell brother seems to make a lot of dosh doing fly on the walls on football firms when not playing with his brothers in Spandau Ballet (Ross kept a low profile unlike Gary and Martin).
  13. Humdinger - not sure if this is supposed to be ignorant or humourous. You really do not want to be in the bother at a Millwall match, such as not the battle of Green Street Market. Certainly not amusing. Hemmingway - this came across as rather pompous. They are a really working class team, supported by working class people. Not the up your rrrrssses DHFC (counting me too). Plenty of Millwall round here, just not ones who post on this forum. Have you been (I have). And the bloke is probably either the ghost of Harry the Dog or Roy :Larner, not a pleasant guy https://metro.co.uk/2018/01/29/lion-london-bridge-spared-jail-racist-rant-labour-mps-office-7269248/ (according to the link of course). https://metro.co.uk/2018/01/29/lion-london-bridge-spared-jail-racist-rant-labour-mps-office-7269248/
  14. I find it difficult to entertain moving to the outer boroughs, both politically and culturally. Do you need to be in London or perhaps do the countryside proper? I lived in the London Borough of Havering just out from Dagenham and still shudder at the memory.
  15. When it happens it is very quick, gaps opening up in weeks. Otherwise it is movement, few old houses are square. Bomb damage has also contributed. Keep your fingers crossed as it is a pain sorting, a pain insuring, and a pain selling. Other sources are nearby trees etc, roots go further in dry weather. The clay is horrid. cracks in summer, water-bound in winter, breaks gardening tools etc etc.
  16. Jenny Jones campaigned to leave Europe as (1) the EU is responsible for much of the environmental mess - support to agro business, monocultures, inefficient farming etc (2) who it treats the developing world (3) neoliberalism and supporting economic growth. As with Lexit there are some good points here. The idea of a controlled recession and return to more sustainable production is a more difficult one. But I see the EU as generally a force for the environment irrespective of how clumsy, bureaucratic, and heavy handed it can be. Separately I like car free days irrespective of tokenism. I liked the reclaim the streets. Just an old punk at the end of the day.
  17. Spoke a bit too soon. But on reflection say compared to 2005 and 1981 where I'd dip in fairly often, and was glued to the telly with Botham's innings and Willis's bowling it's not the same. But there again sport (jumpers for goal posts) isn't. Just to show I am not a total grouch I was down at Beckenham a few weeks ago, and as well as TMS from time to time listen to my county on local radio (with a few farmers and retirees I expect).
  18. I think that that is part of us taking responsibility. Birth rate is fairly stable in Western Europe and once we get over a bulge as we live longer that shouldn't provide too much pressure. But big families are still common in other cultures/countries/religions but then again population control takes us back in history to some pretty authoritarian governments. And fratricide. And the nation of spoiled only child Chinese families. Factual observations not opinions!
  19. You could go onto Norwood Juction as slightly closer and a min cab firm there. Black cabs from Croydon are pretty expensive.
  20. Why don't I care about England any more? Is it because I am getting old and grumpy. Or I've lost interest in cricket since it was lost (live) from terrestrial telly? Or a reaction to the superiority complex of the media and many of the fans. Perhaps I was far more bothered when we were underdogs. Open question, discuss....
  21. And the personal attack on Thunberg was unnecessary.
  22. She's raising the profile of the environment. They are raising the profile of the environment. Us humans need to change - the rich west expecting the developing countries to not develop is a separate issue, and we start in our own back yard. But on the rapidly developing (or developed) countries India and China have the technical capabilities to be leaders in environmental/alternative/sustainable technology. Or shall we just ignore it and it will go away. None of this is the barmy Jenny Jones view of controlled recession and return to growing our own flax and weaving our own linen.
  23. Means to an end, doesn't matter about her flaws. Loads of pampered middle class children marched past my office. Middle class pampered kids. Means to an end. Bump it up the agenda, raise the profile. Who cares about their flaws. Net zero is written into our statute. CCC will bring it forward. Parties will fight general elections over it. We will have to change. Bring it on. Chinese and Indians are 2nd and 6th largest economies in the world. Improving the standard of living is nothing to do with burning coal (by all means have a pop at Germany and Poland). Sod the anti-green wash. Sod Trump. Sod Bolsonaro

UK to reject high speed rail (damned continental idea) and with the reopening of the pits move back to steam power. Gunboat diplomacy next. Hopefully there there is also dynamite strategically placed in the Channel Tunnel too.
  25. The coalition government tried it with the Portas review. It failed. Well at least they tried. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11/08/mary-portas-save-high-street-scheme-has-failed-1000-shops-have/ Shopping and eating habits have changed. Brand recognition is ever more important - see the queues outside of Pret, and one or two at the independent sandwich shop near where I work. Brands of course get it wrong too don't they Jamie. Perhaps Corbo will take us back to the 1960s with price controls and other restrictions. Still happens in France. Doubt it though. The one thing though is the disproportionate impact of rents on the indies - addressing that I can agree with.
