  1. Shame I had to scroll down some way before I saw the police mentioned. They were very helpful in our one, relatively minor, case and so were the school (Harris), as the blazers tend to identify where the kids are from assuming that the perpetrators are still school age.
  2. Loved Grace and Favour - better cakes coffee and prices than BMC (no issues with the latter beyond their cakes, coffee and prices weren't quite as good).
  3. Got a clear siting, a blackcap (this was the female who's cap is brown) - starting to overwinter here https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gardening-blog/2013/jan/10/blackcap-winter-migratory-bird Blue and great tits the most common. Green sqwaky things yet to fully invade.
  4. Keep them sweet by offering them chocolate - they will appreciate that when they get the munchies. Start having way out conversations with them about the stars and the universe. That will confuse them.
  5. I had some shopping bags stolen in another M&S store once - the company were extremely unhelpful and would not check their CCTV. Hopefully they have changed their attitude. I also got nowhere when a bike was stolen in central London in accessing CCTV. It appears not to be worth the owners effort, or it is being gathered for other reasons - this was not related to M&S on this occasion just expressing my frustration!
  6. It's probably a dunnock - sparrars are more obvious. But it has a very languid style almost being horizontal when it feeds. I think we also get groups of coal tits at time, which get inside the squirrel proof feeder.
  7. I had an appointment with a physiotherapist today. I can reassure you all that it is open and hasn't suffered the same fate as much of the high street. But perhaps they could open part of it as a kebab shop or for cashing cheques. There's is not enough room for a hand car wash.
  8. Ask them nicely to switch from skunk to a less pungent variety.
  9. Brown bird, using a nearby branch to perch on to lean across to feed from a feeder. What is it? Can't be a robin, and surprised if a dunnock or sparrow as they also feed on the ground. Too small for a starling. Not green enough for a green finch. To difficult to make out in the hedge. Help! RSPB bird finder didn't help
  10. ULEZ policy was BJ's, as he announced at Mansion House in 2014, I was there. SQ just bought it forward. Surprised at the time that a Tory Mayor announced an interventionist policy https://www.london.gov.uk/press-releases-6364 BJ also considered extension to the Circular roads, and a possible zero emission zone in central London. DF I've posted this in the past on the general matters site. Average speed cameras are the way forward. Speed traps and bumps just encourage accelerate/break. For fun go down Court Lane and see how poo virtually every driver is (you can average around 20mph by simply using your accerator to gently speed up just before the bump and back off a little way before, not needing to brake once until you hit the junction). I'm also trained in ecodriving. I'm such a friggin tree hugger me. Speeeding fines and trying to get to 130mph on a motorbike are a thing of the past.
  11. Local road policy is poo. Totally unjoined up. No public buy-in. You may as well just unrestrict the speed on Brenchley Gardens. I will get round to bothering Southwark about it sometime. Bus usage reducing, cycle superhighways don't help (as much as I am support of compulsory cycling for everyone) and slow down buses, making people paradoxically switch back to cars. Car occupancy decreasing too ie even more single occupants. ULEZ (Boris introduced this not Sadiq) is heavy handed, and rather desperate. I don't see BoJo doing much as PM putting most of his eggs into electric cars.
  12. Bloody green squawky things - stay out of my garden damn you. Black and pied squawky things are fine. Guardian has an article on them as pests so surprised this isn't echoed more on this thread. Informed (if wordy) (RSPB) view: The RSPB is not in favour of a cull of parakeets at this time, but believes it is important that the spread of the ring-necked parakeet is monitored and its potential for negative impacts on our native bird species assessed. The government is obliged to ensure that non-native species do not adversely affect native wildlife and has developed a policy framework for addressing the possible risks associated with such species becoming established. This includes the production of evidence-based risk assessments of non-native species already in, or likely to reach, Great Britain. Decisions on the type of action necessary is based on the outcome of these risk assessments. Ring-necked parakeets, like all birds living in the wild in the UK, are protected by law. The species can be controlled under licence in England, but only in isolated cases where the birds pose a serious threat to conservation of a native species, are causing serious damage to crops, or for air safety purposes.
  13. SpringTime Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I love swearing ..... Love it. Are you Rude Kid in Viz? As was the mag as a whole, this highly amusing at the start but then it just became formulaic and had to get more and more gratuitous In case you are not familar: http://viz.co.uk/category/rude-kid/ warning - it's a bit rude/puerile
  14. Harry Gl?cksburg Battenberg-Windsor is thinking of applying too. You heard it from me first
  15. There was a actor who performed the Vagina Monologue in the West End who used the term on Breakfast TV, in a positive feminist ownership manor - I recall a clip and the presenters saying "that's not a word we normally use..." Not sure if this article refers to this https://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/mar/11/broadcasting2 It drew a few complaints but if you saw it objectively not so (and quite amusing due to the reaction of the presenters) There is a general point about men's bits generally being 'funny' (dick, willy, John Thomas) and lady's being used in a derogatory way (I've never used pussy as a swear word, more of a Mrs Slocombe sitcom double entendre)
  16. Sexy Beast is maybe Ray Winstone's finest moments but on re-watching it was surprised at the amount of swearing. I was probably just struck by the quality of the acting and scenery the first time, and the language does help define Ben Kingsley's nasty character. I'm a fan of Jason Solomon's reviews but he hates the 'Gentleman' - Guy Richie's London gangster/geezer film which is getting fairly decent (sub Lock Stock) reviews, for it's language. http://www.jasonsolomons.com/the-gentlemen-movie-review/?LMCL=LHvF65 Have you seen the film/s? Views about liberal use of profanities? (or certain profanities?)

    Iran

There's a debate on Jermemy Vine at around 13.30 today, but difficult to listen as both the 'experts' are talking over each other - one does appear more obnoxious than the other. Who are they by the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000d1ht
  18. Perhaps one for Robert Elms in his notes and queries. Oh, I forgot, he doesn't do SE post codes. Thinking of books, Cobbs Corner (the former Cobbs Department store) in Sydenham was referenced in the book and radio series the Penge Papers. It's not a best seller, being almost two millionth on Amazon in terms of popularity. More on this from our country bumpkins down the road https://www.sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2970

    Iran

He (Trump) seems to have taken a leaf out of Putin's book by ramping up military aggression to increase his popularity. And an election year too.
  20. Love that insult. Cold over-stewed tea can be lethal and the dishwasher wont remove those tannin stains. I think my issue was as much about the irrelevance of the comments as the videos were nothing to do with the videos. I don't really have a burning desire to post hateful comments on celebs on random sites. I got a similar casual racist comment from an AirBnB host in Canada, originally from Woking. I'd manage to avoid Brexit conversations but he still had to make a remark about London's ethnic make up. I couldn't think of a subtle enough comment on my review so didn't leave one. I did say something at the time about the inappropriateness. Anyway I've invited ridicule of myself as a pompous snowflake so looking forward to hearing a counter argument about speaking your mind and avoiding censorship. Perhaps Alan Carr would be quite proud about attracting such attention, being called a BB on a little viewed YouTube vid and get a t-shirt made up.

    Iran

I followed both the six party talks (North Korea) and the nuclear deal/P5 +1 for Iran with some interest. Hillary Clinton was particularly active in the latter and something she may be best (most favourably) remembered for. Things are very different now. Is Trump leading on Brinkmanship, seeing through the veneer of the regime? or are his moves in Iraq/Iran and the region as a whole leading to a worsening of the situation?? I was struck by his comments on the assassination of Suleimani that the Iran general was responsible for millions of deaths (really?) and that his death would save numerous American lives (the rest of us don't matter). I've got a mate from Iran, got stuck at university in the UK after the revolution, and I understand that it is a wonderful country to visit, with generally lovely people. But I wont be visiting quite yet (and direct flights were discontinued since Trump got in)
  22. I while away some of my time on Youtube, bands that I have seen/liked, special times. I rarely look at the on line comments but a couple left me in despair. Casual racism, and homophobia (the latter aimed at Alan Carr, someone whose style is not to my taste but his sexuality doesn't come into this). I've responded in kind and this is as much me thinking why on earth do people feel they need to make such comments. On both occasions totally irrelevant to a rock music video. I expect these fall short of the definition of on-line hate: (from a useful website) 'Hate material online is recorded by police as a 'hate crime' when a crime defined in law is committed with hate motivation'. http://report-it.org.uk/reporting_internet_hate_crime Is this me just being a precious lefty urbanite? out of touch with half of the country with some of the views on excessive political correctness? trivial (sticks and stones will break my bones)? first world problem? a waste of my, your and the authorities time? or a sign that things still need to change and perhaps could be getting worse? The first few suggestions are rhetorical.
  23. Administrator can you put this on the song for the weekend please. Dying with shame in embarrassment....
  24. I didn't expect to find this and not a term I would usually use....
