  1. She's raising the profile of the environment. They are raising the profile of the environment. Us humans need to change - the rich west expecting the developing countries to not develop is a separate issue, and we start in our own back yard. But on the rapidly developing (or developed) countries India and China have the technical capabilities to be leaders in environmental/alternative/sustainable technology. Or shall we just ignore it and it will go away. None of this is the barmy Jenny Jones view of controlled recession and return to growing our own flax and weaving our own linen.
  2. Means to an end, doesn't matter about her flaws. Loads of pampered middle class children marched past my office. Middle class pampered kids. Means to an end. Bump it up the agenda, raise the profile. Who cares about their flaws. Net zero is written into our statute. CCC will bring it forward. Parties will fight general elections over it. We will have to change. Bring it on. Chinese and Indians are 2nd and 6th largest economies in the world. Improving the standard of living is nothing to do with burning coal (by all means have a pop at Germany and Poland). Sod the anti-green wash. Sod Trump. Sod Bolsonaro

UK to reject high speed rail (damned continental idea) and with the reopening of the pits move back to steam power. Gunboat diplomacy next. Hopefully there there is also dynamite strategically placed in the Channel Tunnel too.
  4. The coalition government tried it with the Portas review. It failed. Well at least they tried. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11/08/mary-portas-save-high-street-scheme-has-failed-1000-shops-have/ Shopping and eating habits have changed. Brand recognition is ever more important - see the queues outside of Pret, and one or two at the independent sandwich shop near where I work. Brands of course get it wrong too don't they Jamie. Perhaps Corbo will take us back to the 1960s with price controls and other restrictions. Still happens in France. Doubt it though. The one thing though is the disproportionate impact of rents on the indies - addressing that I can agree with.
  5. Two questions 1. Why is this on the lounge? Seems more mainstream ED to me. 2. It would be helpful to understand what is Bills, and why all of the excitement. By the power of Google I found out that it was a small chain, but didn't look that exciting. So why all the fuss? An open question. Separately I've heard a branch of the Le Manoir aux Quat?Saisons chain is coming to Dulwich - perhaps Belair? For those not in the know it's a Michelin starred restaurant in Oxfordshire with a good write up on Tripadvisor https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g1096521-d752551-Reviews-Belmond_Le_Manoir_aux_Quat_Saisons-Great_Milton_Oxfordshire_England.html#REVIEWS
  6. Bit of a blanket statement to say that the police aren't interested in crime. Now I am not a fan of the filth, many of the rozzers that I have come across are racist, narrow minded, little Englanders, worse still living in West Wickham, but I am sure that most are interested in nabbing crims.
  7. And now you are patronizing me Sue. Would anyone else like to join in? How about some passive aggressiveness. Thing is about social networking UNLESS YOU ARE USING BLOCK CAPITALS or using proper strong words like "why don't you crawl under the nearest rock with the other low life" (strictly using this as an example) then you can't judge someone's temperament. Sometimes I am smiling and doing it just to stir things up. On this occasion I thought was a pointless thread to troll. I'd even acknowledged this in my first posting with the comment on 'first world problem'. Perhaps ED is being a bit thick this weekend. As my late father would say you may know what x = y = but your university education doesn't mean you have any common sense (spoiler alert I lobbed that one in to stir things up). I pronounce this thread dead. It isn't tired after a long squawk its is no more, it has ceased to be, it is bereft of life, it rests in peace, and this is an ex-thread.
  8. Really? I hadn't noticed. We've never had storms or transport disruption before, how unique. I think you should start your own thread on that rather than trolling this one. Or perhaps lampoon Bob's one on caravaning at the fort - there may be more material there in it for you.
  9. Well this is my shortest ever thread as I've now been refunded. I hope the proprietor has had to pay a service charge, and that the place is now hit by lightening, whilst being engulfed by a plague of locusts. Only joking about the final two. Do share good and bad experiences of Air BnB.
  10. I booked a place yesterday only for the proprietor to message me three hours later telling me it was not available. I expect that she has taken a private booking. She expects me to cancel, and lose the service fee. I've informed her that this is for her to do and opened an enquiry with AirBnB. Her messages decline any responsibility. So I have paid, and have a contract, for a place that I wont be able to take. I'll continue with both the owner and AirBnB but others' experiences are helpful. Sorry a first world problem! It's somewhere else in Europe. Thanks everso My period of grace where I can cancel but still lose the service fee ends tomorrow tea time

Churchill ran a bad campaign and Atlee promised a brave new world. BJ will not run a bad campaign and despite many of the good Labour policies Corbyn will not be trusted by the majority of the electorate, like, ummhh, Blair in 97.....

Thanks all for some good posts. Whilst it is recess the new regime are going hammer and tongues at this including the message that it will be the EU's fault for no deal. Daily meetings, departments on full war preparedness. Preparing for the worst and then averting disaster one way or another? May's balanced Cabinet all a million miles away and the last three years conveniently airbrushed out of Tory history. As for Cummings is he now running the civil service?

Have people lost interest? Or just resigned to a disaster. So my reading is that the main reason just over half of the population voted leave was for sovereignty. That is a political not an economic decision. I'm not understanding where the mandate is for this hard Brexit. I see the comments on the BBC which are polarized - you are stupid to vote Brexit vs you sad remainer loser, get over it. No debate on what people actually want. I'm still hoping it is all a bad dream. The other worry is how BoJo has any credibility having no substance or integrity. You could also say the same about the leader of the opposition, although he isn't leading us over the cliff edge, irrespective that he is a big contributor to this friggin mess.
  14. What a right on thread this is. When I moved to the area Lordship Lane was more like Poorship Lane. Since the area has become so gentrified and competition for places in state school I though you no longer had to pay for private education. Mind you Boris will bring back the Grammar Schools. Isn't this more of a discussion for mumsnet (that is not a gender specific comment I hasten to add.)
  15. Malcolm Nash, sadly most famous for Gary Sobers six sixes in an over https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/49178748 but I was there when he took five wickets, with a hatrick, and then two more wickets successive wickets in a JPL match, taking five wickets for two runs. http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1970S/1975/ENG_LOCAL/SUNLG/WORCS_GLAM_SUNLG_07SEP1975.html A great fast bowler.
  16. I'm finding this rather surreal. Can anyone explain. I understand that in Italy they pack up and go for the beach for the summer. And in Sweden they do similar because everyone has a cottage on the archipelago. I'm just confused about spending the summer on the ridge of the Great North Wood.

    Good link. Like it!
  18. No it's not, it'd the organisation. Organisational morons. Don't excuse the organisation. It's like excusing the German people in the second world war for Hitler. It's not snotty letters, it is getting the organisation to take responsibility. Why don't you apologise for every other organisation that has done wrong?
  19. You've got plenty of good advice, and some stupid stuff too. This is not funny. So do all of these below: Clock the registration, preferably video it, and report to Southwark Council as a complaint (polluting and wasting fuel). Report to Southwark Council Environmental Health, and/or Highways, quoting their own air quality policies, and asking what action they will be taking. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/environment/air-quality/what-we-re-doing/what-we-are-doing Also question how on earth they can 'ban' unnecessary idling. Discourage it, take enforcement action yes. Ban? How many enforcement officers would that take? https://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/2018/jan/southwark-launches-new-anti-engine-idling-enforcement Copy in the Mayor of London and ask what action he will be taking Write to your MP and ask him to raise this with the Secretary of State for the Environment. Copy in your local Councillor. The stupidity of leaving your engine running is something I normally associate with the middle classes on the school run, or the police. Those have led to most of my arguments. The more we do to raise this with the appropriate authorities the better. My only facetious comment is to stuff a potatoe in the exhaust so the vehicle stalls. Highy unlikely that this will send carbon monoxide into the vehicle.

Sorry if my sense of humour is too subtle (or SE22 is having a sense of humour bypass). BoJo going on about a million to one chance that we leave without a deal. And that reminded me of Jeff Wayne, and the track Eve of War, from the late 70s concept album war of the worlds. Let's face it you just have to laugh. They could do this in the middle ages with the plague. Although that wasn't self-inflicted. The other track that comes to mind, from the same source, is Forever Autumn. I couldn't find a well-known example of a song about a nuclear winter.

Wow, what a day. I've seen misplaced optimism from a minister with my own eyes - sorry can't say more. And the chances of no deal are a million to one, but still it comes (with respect to Jeff Wayne - sorry too late for the groover flicker thread)

Indeed, I love his stuff and make an effort. People are also speaking well of Chernobyl albeit fact not fiction.
  23. Strewth, I've just listened to this and it was with different words for an American audience - obviously caused offence but I expect most will take that in the spirit is was intended.

I know that there have been previous threads about what ED is watching... I'm catching up on Killing Eve, and a bit worried that it has peaked and now a bit of Emperors New Clothes. I will persist and no spoilers please. What else is worth catching up on? There was a series in the spring on BBC about someone coming out of prison? Is this on i-player? Sorry to be useless. Can I catch up on the Handmaiden's tale? Can't get Channel 4 catch up on me telly, have Netflix but not doing Amazon or Sky. Peaky Blinders is nonsense but entertaining. Thanks everso
  25. Bit late this weekend but here's a great one from Stephen Yaxley-Lennon about freedom, and I think having a pop at the lefty press
