Gyles not Giles. Sorry. I would commit Treason though by refusing to use imperial units. WTF.

It's good to see that we are going to reclaim our rich and diverse language. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jul/26/the-comma-touch-jacob-rees-mogg-sends-language-rules-to-staff A bit of a non-story in that it is right to draft letters properly (even for me as a product of a comprehensive school) and ministers will have a style guide. You can argue about split infinitives but I am on board with removing redundant words, and definitely limiting !!!!!. To like quote Giles Brandreth, like, who was like on the BBC news just now like, like it is not right, to like, use like, all the time like. Innit? Like? He rightly said the English vocabulary is the richest in the world, quoting half a million words although my quick Google only showed 176k in the OED, as opposed to 130k for an unconfirmed source on the French language. Although if we are reclaiming our language we will need to return to Saxon and old Norse, none of this foreign rubbish (ignoring that these were German and Scandinavian settlers) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_language_influences_in_English
  3. If you can wire a plug you can probably fix this - most times a loose wire that needs tightening. Invest in a nice set of screwdrivers (the main thing that can go wrong is damaging the screw where the driver isn't a good fit). It's also totally legal to fix fittings and replace like with like.
  4. I used to get contacted by solicitors telling me I would be taken to court for unpaid debts by tenants. I said good, particularly as I didn't have a contract with the utility at that address. Otherwise to stop sending me threatening quasi-legal letters. It wasn't a scam but I am reminded of that.
  5. We did wiring in combined science when I was 12. Springs on a peg board with 12 v battery and lights. Leaned about ring mains, fuses, two way lighting and the like. Go to Wickes and buy a ?2 tester screwdriver and you can check the circuits with the power on. Trust me I've only had a shock about five times in my life.......
  6. So we have a British Trump now (that's for another thread). A chap who was telling me how good this was also said how Trump is regularly quoted out of context by the liberal media, including his recent twitter storm (go back to your own country). I thought perhaps he has a point and I only saw a selected part of the article. So as someone who wants an objective view I checked. The full quote was: "interesting to see ?Progressive? Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run" I can't see how this was selected or abridged. It appears to be the full tweet. So I expect this chap just followed some right wing news feed and decided that it must be correct.

All to do with the surface area contact with the road and the level of resistance (adhesion). A function of tyre tread, tyre compound, tyre profile, pressure, temperature and the road surface including rain, snow and ice. Not simply size of tyre. Not sure if a patronising or inane comment helps. Safety also depends on the way you ride, where you ride, and the behaviour of other road users.
  8. Maybe just answered my own first question as it looks to have had planning permission. Shame to lose the garage after 50 years... http://councilmeetings.lewisham.gov.uk/documents/s61244/110%20Wood%20Vale%20SE23%20-%20Committee%20Report.pdf
  9. After selling the old coach houses Roy build a nice new garage. Sadly it's been shut for a number of years and a quick peek appears to be being converted to something or other. On the other side a chap worked on cars outside, by some similarly old buildings. Now housing is being built. Any news on either. It was handy to have a garage close to home. Do PM me with the other chaps details as I have lost them. Some discussion from a few years ago https://www.se23.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11858
  10. Dangerous Irish Tenor seen in Peckham Rye
  11. dbboy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why don't you tell us WHAT the march is about > rather than yap on about the when, where and who, > yeah, who are these celebs, never heard of them. OK first part of the sentence true, it is frustratingly confusing what this is about (beyond don't leave Europe and we don't like Boris). Find is bizarre that there is a campaign against him and he hasn't even become PM yet. > > You appear to be a bunch of anti Boris remainers > or is that Remoaners??????? A bit of transparency > (honesty) would help. Well yes, you could say that. > > Have you not heard of democracy???????? The > Govt/Parliament are trying to (badly stop the > outcome of the referendum which a majority voted > for) That's where it gets interesting. We have a government that didn't win a majority and a PM who wont be voted in by the people. Seems a bit of a democratic deficit to me. But hey ho, Boris may improve educational standards and hopefully bring in a law to limit the use of exclamation marks and question marks - and bring in some latin too. I suggest a limit of one ! per post and one ? for every question. I'm planning a march on Whitehall now!!!! Who would like to join me?????? Is this a wonderful piece of digression!!!!!!!!!! Carpe diem!!!!!!!!!!!! Caudices!!!!!! The sun has come out now!!!!!! So I think I will cycle down (very champagne socialist!!!!!!) now!!!!!!!!!
  12. We grew up with mongrels. Dad had a pedigree red setter before I was born and handed it back to his brother who bred it after a short time as he found it too highly strung. Not sure how much this is s general rule but I am sticking to it.
  13. I thought it was a dangerous Irish tenor, referring to perhaps a modern day Joseph Locke https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Locke Do check out the brilliant film too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hear_My_Song
  14. Close https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/58cm-classic-vintage-british-eagle-race-racer-racing-bike-town-bicycle/1346687583 And note a very limited description. The genuine stuff on e bay will give lots on the provenance, reasons for sale etc. I'm of course not saying the one in the ad is nicked but I wouldn't go near it.
  15. Good luck in getting it back. Perhaps it was dumped locally - we put posters up on lamp posts when some yooffs nicked our daughters, it was found in a hedge and the police picked it up, but we were informed by someone who saw the poster. It's a lovely bike but I doubt worth much second hand - you can try the criminal's market place Gum Tree - I can use this description as my stolen bike was sold on this, being put up the evening it was nicked. Barstools. But that was taken by a 'professional' rather than an opportunist. Did you get the security details etched by the police (whatever the scheme is called) - all mine are, but apologies if that is shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. I share you pain. It is so personal. The only people I hate more than the thieves is the rrrrssss who buy stolen bikes most likely knowing they are knock off.
  16. I've had a couple of scrapes with Clarkes when cycling but no worse than any other operator - just more of them than most coaches. The run into the depot in Lower Sydenham sounds a bit of a race track - but there again Royal Mail vans going back to depot eg Bricklayer Arms or Herne Hill way seem to race each other. I expect that they will not give you access to CCTV and their schedule nor will the police take action even though the driver did not stop. Could hire a private detective but that is cloud cuckoo land. And before I am seen as libeling Clarkes would they really risk their reputation and fib. Apols that this is not more constructive....
  17. My point was the American 'craft' ales exported here which are (or were) all the rage are not made by artisan brewers. Goose Island - Anheuser-Busch InBev. Anchor - Sapporo. It's like drinking Leffe and thinking that it is made in a small monastery. Another inBev brand. Think it is safe to say that American craft ales are bottled, pasteurized (someone will prove me wrong) and strong flavoured. My other point for the pedants out there is that these sort of beers take beers popular in Europe and often concentrate the flavour - super hoppyy, malty, stouty, sweety, thicky, strong, reddy, dry-y. Craft means nothing in our consumer law but for many the sort of American style beers referred to above. Perfectly good beer for my tastes at Brockley, Canopy, Southwark etc, and long may it stay that way, and a lot cheaper too. And as for the history of beer? Wasn't it Egypt. Didn't we adulterate our ale centuries ago by adding French hops? I recall a 'Tudor farm' reenactment series on BBC where they made beer for the workers by gathering wild yeast with their own malted barley, what would this have tasted like?
  18. Interesting about American beers. I remember being in Colorado in the late 90s and being impressed by their small breweries and bars. And then similarly so at the Greenwich Union in the early days of Meantime. But then a mate said to me that they took European recipes and then simply went over the top, which now seems like some of our craft ales. And my brother out there said don't be fooled, most of the craft ales are made in beer factories owned by multi nationals, again feels a bit like what is happening here. Anyway I'll watch this space with interest.
  19. I think that there is a broader discussion on tastes. I've seen the whole lot from the death of ale as the big brewers wanted a uniform national product cold and under pressure (keg), the rise of the regional brewers, the fall of the big brewers begetting the pub chains, the consolidation of the regionals as they have created new monsters (in descending order Greene King, Shepherd Neame and Marstons), the rise of microbrewers and their acquisition by the mega brewers. Meanwhile I sense Emperor's New Clothes as beers get hoppier, and more bizarre in flavouring (peach, grapefruit or banana has a novelty but not on a regular basis). From time to time subtle is good, please! And is home brewing getting a bit too sophisticated nowadays and perhaps even cheating a bit. Anyway what to I know, views please. And yes, Firkin, what great memories! David Bruce, a hero and anti-hero.
  20. Motorola G7 - which I see is first to feature in the link above and I also like this teccy site https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/moto-g7-review
  21. greetings Jenny, you will see that I have a pop at most people who just give a link (in fact I thought I was being quite gentle - I'm far worse with those who put up links to tweets but don't have views). Here's the artcle (just cut and past the whole thing with http in it as well) https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/jul/15/invasion-electric-scooter-backlash It seems to want to cover everything and does not live up to its title. There are interesting studies in Copenhagen, which has the benefits of less cars and more space for bikes, and in Germany where they seem to be used when you are drunk. There is also some discussion about hire schemes but concerns that they go the same way as our yellow bike scheme. Some of the debate on this site is more illuminating. Greetings Sidhue - I certainly wasn't having a pop at you. I do think it will be a shame if some give up the conventional bike for the e-bike due to the health benefits. I could certainly have a push up the hill by an electric motor. Greetings fishbiscuits - I overeacted to a post which I thought was having a go at cyclists, which you normally get on this sort of discussion. But I didn't read it properly and jumped to the wrong conclusion. And thanks for the amusing comment on petrol engines. Made me smile. And greetings to the rest of the EDF.
  22. I think the purpose of social media is to discuss issues and enlighten ourselves. So if you refer to an article you may wish to explain what it is about, give an opinion and perhaps share the link. Otherwise it is like saying "there was a dog turd on the pavement" - which the questions are - where did it come from, what did it look like, why is it there, who is going to clean it up. My apologies as I just found it very hard to not make these comments rather than look it up. So back to the discussion. Well not really further digressions. 1. Don't you just hate it when people go off topic. 2. Don't you just hate it when people have to have a go at cyclists even though this thread is not about push bikes 3. Interestingly I have seen two push bikes with petrol engines in the last week. (here's a kit you can buy in Amazon although I can't recommend it) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stroke-Motorized-Petrol-Bicycle-Engine/dp/B071DQXPNT Back on thread - issues I have with electric scooters are that they suddenly come out of nowhere, cut me up and I doubt if the users have any training. But there again am I being selective in my views, and the same (ignorant) arguments are made about cyclists. Anyway perhaps you forgot to finish off your post Jenny. I look forward to hearing more! (that sentence was not supposed to be sarcastic, clearly my earlier words were very pompous)
  23. The chat with the police was about the mob, not the police's political leanings. I know a few coppers some of whom I count as friends s0 comments about sympathy are there to provoke views rather than a black or white impression. It would be great if some cops joined in, but I expect that we are too far away from West Wickham for them to be on this site. Sadly I have now digressed into Anti-fascists Police sympathies The history of the 1930s But please do join in.
  24. Apparently the battle of Cable Street was not a historic alignment between the left wing and Jews, as official representatives of both sides refused to support this.. This is all an urban myth as Europe turned towards communism after the war. https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/the-battle-of-cable-street-and-other-british-jewish-myths-1.5446805 However 20000 ordinary people, many East End Jews and many left wing, opposing the British Union of Fascists who were supported by 7000 police, is good enough for me to keep this description.
