It's the high prices at times of high demand that allows companies to sell things cheaper when demand is lower - Amazon, Uber, airlines - all the same. It may not seem fair at times like this but we benefit from it at other times. True and always good to understand supply and demand (price control generally a dirty word). On a separate matter the mark up for hotel rooms at Bilbao for Euro 2020 was phenomenal. I'll get great pleasure in cancelling my overpriced tiny AirBnB room for three. Got to snatch some glimmers of light from this situation. Like all markets where there is under-supply things can change or someone can come in with an innovative product (Japanese toilets or bidets?) and you are left with warehouses full of a valueless commodity.
  2. Thanks for putting me straight. I've attached the website as a link so others can go to it. https://www.canigotothepub.co.uk/
  3. Thanks, a good thread, and a bit of humour too which I always appreciate. A self-inflicted crisis, but interesting to hear as we are now supposed to shop less frequently that this will encourage bulk purchases. I've enjoyed switching to a more frequent shop started well before this situation, trying out new places, and using less of the main supermarket chains. But I've had more time on my hands in recent months. Will our shopping habits change once this is all over?
  4. Can someone substantiate this please. My brain was giving me warning signals. There is no introduction just click on a text box. Sorry to be suspicious but alarm bells were ringing. I don't usually get drawn into conspiracy theories. Apols Neila - you've been posting for some time so you don't come across as a scammer.
  5. We've been buying less and simply running down some of the stuff in the back of the cupboard. We've had to switch to some alternatives, which is fine. Some of the luxuries/treats including biscuits and chocolate don't seem to be in short supply so it is nice to buy without feeling we are depriving anyone. I worked on fuel emergencies during the 00s and whatever message you tried to get across it would still have the same effect - "I need to fill my car up now" - even if I rarely use it. We always joked that the first thing that runs out is toiler roll. Not really a joke. I feel that social media including community sites such as this, and Whatsapp groups, make things worse as they contribute to the mass hysteria. It is right to discuss and reflect, but posting on this site about panic buying doesn't help one bit. Please rise above it. Please see this as a constructive post. I've been biting my tongue for the last few days as there is as much bad feeling on this site, as positive posts offering help and support. I'll quietly disappear.
  6. I'm trying to find out what the government said about exercise. I'm sure I remember either encouraging it, or not discouraging it (and those who are isolating can exercise around the house and garden). Useful to get some factual information about our open spaces. But please refrain from commenting about the rights and wrongs 'done the right thing'. Let the authorities decide on this.
  7. Recommend listening to today's food programme on Radio 4 "Coronavirus and Food: Your Questions Answered". A rational and informed discussion and update. There is enough food, we have a very much 'just in time' distribution system. The Spanish are ramping up their production. Drivers upping hours - spare a thought (a) generally older and more vulnerable (b) some have got grief for bringing food from the continent particularly Spain and Italy. Simple message as posted above.
  8. They've banned cycling in France, Italy and Spain. Do you want a 100,000 officials on the street watching your movements? As admin says can you keep postings useful on this section?
  9. Returning to Lollipop's comments, in the early days of the Web when I was working in fair trading we were careful with regards to online criticisms in that this could be seen as defamation. Factual stuff and consumer ratings, fine. So it always gets me that some can use forums to express strong but not always well founded views.
  10. Writing a will is a good thing irrespective of the current situation Cremation, sky burial or donating your body to medical science are also good things Also worth getting your funeral playlist together, I started a thread on this subject a few years ago.
  11. It is not trivial - it is an image of a strong nation that BJ wants to portray I expect. I find it an unnecessary and annoying distraction. Others may think it is a positive thing. This site is full of trivial threads, you are welcome to pick on them. There is loads that you can discuss/comment on with regards to the government's response - uncertainty for example with schools, shifting sands, lack of action to curtail panic buying, guidance vs compulsion.
  12. Rather under the belt, and very political but am I the only one who thinks that having the union flags behind the PM in the televised conferences reminds me of another time? This is not as facetious as it may sound. Looking back union flags have appeared in the past but they seem to have more prominence now.

Sue, I think this is probably the most pointless post that I have ever seen on EDF. And you do some pretty pointless posts. Perhaps think in future 'do I have anything useful to add'. You will find that you will become a happier and more fulfilled person. 14. I was in India in 2002 Bangalore (now Bangalaru) to see the India/England test. A lot of local people told me it would be sold out. I arrived on an overnight train from Hampi (now Hampe) early morning and decided to go straight to the stadium in search of tickets. A sleepy security guard told me not to be stupid and to wait until the ticket office opened late morning. Imagine my embarrassment. That was the Last time I took any notice of panic buying.
  15. Funnily enough the negative stuff is still going on here on the EDF, what a shame. More positive stuff about media and the community please.
  16. Starting with Radio London. Others will be doing similar. On a lighter note I enjoyed Jason Solomon's recommendation on films/box setting whilst we are all socially isolating. And get London Dancing https://twitter.com/hashtag/GetLondonDancing?src=hashtag_click Link to help etc: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p086t3v7 If you are in a position to help and have something that you?d like us to share, get in touch: Email: [email protected] and put "Make a Difference" into the subject title. 18. I love seeing people walking back (in this case Savacentre) with massive bags, wheelie thingies and the like. It's a bit sad actually and chances are if they are without a car then they probably need to buy a little more. Hardly filling their car boot, and unlikely to have a garage or shed to hoard. Sorry I've done full circle on this one, teaches me to tar everyone with the same brush. I enjoy shopping at Lidl too, but even there (and with only space for half a dozen cars) the queues put me off today. So no fresh bread/pastries for me today (Lidl have the finest bakery). I gave up the big shop months ago and enjoy (or did enjoy) shopping by bike.

Big plug for Radio London for all their community support. Although can't find the link which is a shame. I'm sure that other stations are also doing their bit.
  20. Cheers admin. Most of the threads on the Covid section are in deed offering help and advice. A great reflection on society. Only a small number going off into rants etc. I'm keeping my rants on the lounge!
  21. This is a site for advice and support, go to the lounge if you want to have wider discussion.

  24. Great idea. Can we keep the broader discussions to this part of the site? I see that a couple of threads have already gone that way on the new section - surely this should be for support and advice not discussion.
