I use crazy, mental, mad, and no doubt other terms that others may object to in common parlance. They have long since become harmless in my opinion. I have others words if I want to be offensive. There are words that we threw around in my school days that I wouldn't ever resort to nowadays. I once chatted to a couple of teenagers in a school group who said that someone looked like a mong. They didn't know what it meant so worth telling them that if a teacher overheard they would get grief. It was on a ski lift, I wasn't hanging around outside school. I work with people with mental illness, my mother suffered from it, so I have a fair idea of right and wrong. Of course language evolves and I shudder that we used to use the word 'gay' as a term for say an idea or act that was a bit 'lame'. Was not intended to be homophobic. Yabadabado, gay would be a good word to reclaim as a happy or nice time.

I downloaded the Cewe software at Xmas, they did a better size of photobook than the rest. Just got to get down to sorting out a zillion photos. The curse of digital photography.

As a cyclist, driver and someone with a motorbike license the thing that accords with me is security. I have had four push bikes(the last one straight on Gum Tree) and one 600cc motor bike nicked (into a van and onto the continent). With cordless angle grinders we've lost the war... This affects my quality of life far more than safety (even though this could be an end to my quality of life....) and we will have to beg to differ on the ULEZ. Did own a couple of two strokes though.....

Cycling down the Thames path I saw a small group of 'motley' people. They were picking wild rocket and (can't remember the other plant) and we had a nice chat about foraging. I say motley as they were from all over the world and where foraging was much more common. When I stayed in Sweden we foraged wild strawberries, redcurrants and chantrelles. Small population lot of wild spaces. Not the organised gangs that pick forests bear of wild mushrooms for the trendy greengrocers. Anyway advice on (a) when to plant wild garlic (bulbs or clumps) (b) what to plant in my own garden (wild strawberries?)

I was at Celtic vs Forest in 84 UEFA Cup standing with 30000 in the jungle (very hostile). I don't recall 'Walk on' but "Argentina, Argentina" (for some reason they supported Argentina in the battle over the Malvinas). It all went quiet when Forest Scored. I kept very quiet.

Paper round. The equivalent to about ?1.50 an hour today. Once stripped down cigarette lighters, as there was a fault that stopped them turning off (pockets catching fire!). Great fun doing monotonous work, listening to Radio City, and being 'abused' (banter) by the young ladies who usually spent five days a week packing them up for distribution. Also picked peas one summer. Much better than the day spent picking raspberries which paid about the same as the paper round and was far more uncomfortable (standing picking raspberries).

In last night's final of University Challenge St John's (a fairly modest lot) beat Merton. I expect that all were very well educated but that St John's were at the better state schools or less well know public schools where as Merton went to more elite establishments. St John's were surprisingly bad at the bonus points, I did better than them (surely everyone knows "You'll Never Walk Alone" was from the musical Carousel), and Merton excelled at the arts and classics. But St John's did much better at the starters for ten. UC is a great indicator of the impact of schooling on general and classical knowledge. Sadly no popular music in the final. Gender balance is usually poor and does not represent the university population. Saw a documentary maybe 30 years ago about how many people retired to the SW, particularly from the Midlands as they had enjoyed many happy holidays in Cornwall, Somerset and Devon. At the time they said how miserable it could be during the winter, long nights and so much shut. Fast forward 30 years and it can be even worse, they always feature Minehead, aging population, bored youth and few employment prospects. Of course Kent/Sussex unlike Somerset are still in the SE bubble, very connected both to London and to the continent and in reasonably full employment. More of a lesson in imagining what the place is like when it is wet and grey.

EDF returning to it's heartlands - not consumer rip offs, social cohesion or geopolitics. Please leave any abuse for me on these threads not this one! Been to Obergurgl many times - good runs, high, extremely snow sure, pretty and close to Innsbruck. Downsides a bit posh/expensive (excuse my humble roots). Any other recommendations - Albach seems lovely but a bit low (going in early January with my two (youth) kids). Please do include views on accommodation - we stay in 3* guest houses rather than the 5* Hotel Edelweiss. My next thread will be on Tuscany holiday villas and second homes in Provence.
