I'm happy. The shops are happy too irrespective of views above. Being in the area in Tuesday there were many other happy people. Edited to add: The Captain and his dolly mixtures are also happy

Sadly they don't do the full range of post office services

Someone is peed off due to a theft and wanted to vent. I'm not sure what response they were after beyond 'there there', or put the thief in prison and throw away the key. I've had a few thefts in the past but not felt the need to share here. Like it or not but a thread like this is open to some mirth. I was tempted to post after offering a good fridge free of charge on this site the person failed to turn up, and the scrap people cut the compressor and left the rest for me to take to the tip. But I got over it. Street WhatsApp shares stuff like this - generally don't leave thing out in, or near the street, as some will think they are there to take. I digress..... Looking forward to some witty comments 😁

Let's keep this on the subject please. I have been cycling particularly in Southwark for many years. I think generally the roads are good for cycling. Avoiding some of the issues with road management in recent years it would be good to hear from other cyclists. Starting off - Lordship Lane is OK, generally not having speeding drivers. You have to adopt an assertive position coming down to Court Lane and make use of the bus Lane coming up to Toolstation. Underhill can be busy but going down the hill you can get to around the speed of free flowing traffic and up the hill past the cemetery there are no parked cars so room for cars to pass. Roads around Dunstan's can see impatient drivers. Forest Hill road can be a bit chokka and not convinced you need the lights by the Rye. Going further down towards Peckham it can be horrid during rush hour with no easy way of passing stationary traffic. Four roads I don't like but have to use are Sydenham Hill poor surface and not space for cars etc to pass with proper clearance. Really needs a bike lane up hill, but not sure who owns the verge. Honor Oak Road, a race track with some narrow sections. Brenchley ditto. Honor Oak Park from the hill towards the station in both directions awful surface, narrow road. Need to get rid of parking on one side and bike lane going up the hill. So other cyclists, what are your faves and which roads should be improved? Beyond Greendale are there other offers road routes or could we have more? And do you like the hills? We have our own Cols 😊

I was lucky enough to see West play Brunel in the state opening of St Pancras International. Just found out that Penny Wooly/Archer died at the age of 105, playing the part until she was 103 - and the character about to celebrate her 100th on the programme https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1wn1zl3q5qo

Why is this on the transport part of the forum? If it goes wider than East Dulwich then surely the Lounge. It is about a nice public location. The impact on transport is covered over numerous other threads. As for sourcing of stone I expect virtually all of us are guilty of purchasing stuff that we maybe shouldn't. Single use plastic, fruit and veg from half way round the world and products containing palm oil being some obvious ones. And Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat if you want to talk about poor treatment of workers.

I got ripped off for the equivalent of a couple of quid in India many years ago. Perhaps I should have started a thread. Fortunately I found a home on the ticket collectors thread as it was related to scams on public transport. Thank you for reading.

Thanks Earl, I'll check it out

Beware of fake ‘ticket inspectors’ on trains
malumbu replied to Naiada's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Reminds me of touts in India, showing you to a bus seat, but we're not official. And the guy that sold me a meal on the train only to disappear. I'm probably a pound or two out of pocket I also got threatened by a drunk railway bloke in Hungary who tried to take money off me All good anaddotes! -
There was also a shooting in Walworth. Sadly there are murders every day. Still not sure why this has been posted. I find out about local events on this website but don't usually use it as a news source. Edited to add, not wishing to offend of course, as the OP has made some good contributions,

I expect that virtually everyone is aware if this. Was there a point in posting?

Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about pipe tobacco

It used to be an excellent pub in the 80s, 90s and 00s, and no doubt decades before

I prefer Old Holborn. I should be more imaginative. https://www.davy.co.uk/wine-bar/segar-and-snuff-parlour/ I may try this place

Mythical weekend rail service - East Dulwich
malumbu replied to JRDulwich's topic in Roads & Transport
I got responses, just not very good. I could have written a better one myself. No doubt her team replied. She has a good record of dealing with difficult family issues I'm reliably informed. I go out my way to call elected representatives by formal names. Mayor Khan and former Mayor and former PM Johnson. Off this site I just called them by their surnames. I detest the whole move to first names for politicians. It started with Johnson, whose first name I won't use. He is not my mate, he is not cuddly and funny. He is a self serving liar who was happy to screw the country up for political gain. I asked the Beeb to not use his first name but they fobbed me off. I use Ellie here for effect, to make out we are on close terms, which we aren't. And for effect, ie complain through official channels before posting on social media. I go threatened by my MP once, a long time ago, that anecdote is for the pub -
This is a forum to discuss issues,; could you tell me where in the 100s of posts responding to my generally thoughtful and informed posts, you have actually discussed my points rather than dismiss them? I struggle to see why my last post would result in your response. You are most welcome to disagree with what I post, but at least be prepared to have a proper discussion.

Mythical weekend rail service - East Dulwich
malumbu replied to JRDulwich's topic in Roads & Transport
I had a great bus and tube journey to and from central London on Saturday night. Trains weren't running, but my connections were brilliant. Friday to North Greenwich was also successful. Conversely my bus journey to Sydenham yesterday was disrupted by road works and the fatal shooting. London public transport is brilliant and no need to use a car for the majority of my journeys. I did raise frequent engineering work on the Overground and a reduction in post COVID mainline with Ellie and feel she needs to make this a higher priority. -
1. I was responding to a post that inferred that drivers were not a problem due to licensing, having to pass a test etc. I disagree. I made a number of points why. You simply dismiss these points. 2. Where have I condoned cycling on the pavement? Please go through the hundred of posts on this subject and find one from me saying that riding on the pavement is fine. 3. I tried to get some proper debate about how to address this issue. But there was failure to engage, just the usual stuff on LTNs and that the police and local authorities should patrol the pavements. To repeat myself education, information and training is important. 4. The authorities will not take action against children cycling on the pavement. What age is appropriate to ride on the road? I'd say year 5 with appropriate training and the presence or approval of a responsible adult. 5. I will occasionally try to discourage pavement cycling either politely or with older children and adults bluntly. Depends on my mood

Drivers - oh no they don't, Most signal late when turning left at junctions, if at all. Recommend you actually check for yourself. No point in signalling as you are actually turning. Too late. It's good when cyclists give indications of what they are doing, through good road position, checking behind and where possible signalling. But your post suggests you have a massive bias against cyclists whilst believing drivers do little or nothing wrong.
-
Guilty as charged. I'm always riding over equestrian crossings! Glad they didn't ask me that in my driving test. I was asked about bus lanes, and had never driven on one. We also didn't have level crossings where I came from. Like here Anyway nobody appears to have commented on my well presented points on poor driving standards. Do you agree or disagree?
-
Not demonising drivers. Pointing out the bad habits that most have, that will not necessarily lead to points on the license but could lead to someone being killed or seriously injured. I've said on numerous occasions that information and training is the key to good cycling standards. Most of the primary schools offer this through the government's Bikeability programme. Sadly due to funding some adult training has been cut.

Yes that one is great. Sydenham is small, they have done up the larger one on Southend Road towards Downham

Anecdotal from driving instructors I worked with on driving standards and smarter driving. A select cadre of advanced driving instructors together with friends who are, or were, instructors. Pick any junction, and see how many indicate properly in advance, one in ten I expect How many check their mirror before indicating? I expect less than half How many people check inside before turning, well under half How many people routinely exceed speed limits when their are no traffic cameras? The majority How many people cut corners when turning - most One hand on the steering wheel, etc etc Not backing off the accelerator when shops, crossings, schools, cyclists, Judging by Honor Oak Road and the school there, majority don't. Driving smoothly in traffic calmed streets, most don't. You may get away with one of those on your actual test, but any more expect it will be a failure. And that is for generally inexperienced drivers where there will be some leniency from examiners. You may well get away with this low level poor driving skills for all of your driving life without a serious collision, but it only takes one turn left across a cyclist or right when a motorcyclist is overtaking...... If you've got an idle moment then stand by a junction, or a school with relatively free flowing traffic and do your own research. Of course you go to some other countries in Europe, and beyond, and there is far worse. Cross over the border from France into Germany, or Austria into Germany, and you will see fairly quickly much more aggressive driving styles. I expect most of this is just poor driving skills rather than aggressive driving, The one in twenty that should give cyclists more room is probably simply unaware rather than seething due to their views on cyclists, clarification in the Highway Code etc But if you tested most drivers on the Highway Code, unless newly qualified, yes, you'd guessed it, they'd fail.
-
Drivers need to demonstrate this on the day they pass their test. Then much of that goes out of the window. Do a spot test on drivers on the road today and 95 percent will fail. There is no compulsion for refresher or advanced training of drivers. I've posted this many times but a number of you continue to be apologists for poor drivers/driving.
