Perhaps some of you are unaware of the damage that the coalition did to our economy through their unnecessary programme that f'cked public services and led to a massive drop in real term pay across the public sector. Or maybe your teachers, doctors, nurses do not deserve a decent wage. Quite shocking if you are into this American way of thinking.

chimney breast in deed, yes no side alcove and a flush, well supposedly flush wall This sort of thing, although all the pictures on line are of working fireplaces
-
Helping a family friend. Fireplace and fire breast removed leaving the rectangular base of the hearth. Reasonably flush with exposed wooden floorboards. Anyone have this in their gaff? Simple thing would be to paint it with brown floor paint, other options are jazzy Victorian self adhesive vinyl tiles or put some quarry tiles on it. Latter two both a feature but not sure a raised surface works. Place came like this. I'd be happier with an original Victorian fireplace.

CPZ in Dulwich Village ward to go live on January 6
malumbu replied to Glemham's topic in Roads & Transport
I doubt if this conversation has moved on one iota in the last few years. If you collectively feel so strongly that Southwark has not followed proper process then you have a complaints procedure and ultimately judicial review. The ballot box indicates that the masses weren't concerned enough on transport policy to put another government, and other councillors in. You can say till your blue in the face that a monkey (thinking of Hartlepool) could have stood as a Labour candidate and still got in, but it doesn't change things. You can also consider statutory guidance on parking enforcement, which Ms Reeves can raise with the Transport Secretary if there are issues here. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/civil-enforcement-of-parking-contraventions If this was being considered in my street I would lobby to make it fair and proportionate - costs, enforcement, timings, visitors, tradespeople etc. but I'd be in the minority as my street would also be up in arms. And it would probably happen in any case -

Then why did they not do all the streets in the original area? After consultation they reduced the size of the CPZ. Does it affect you by the way? -

It is what they said in the newspaper. Have a go at them, the police, the media and everyone else you consider woke who uses this term. What a dreadful word is woke is, a lazy term, indicative of how populist right wing organisations and individuals hate those of us who care about society, the environment and the world as a whole. We don't wake up in the morning angry. I'd stick to GB news, Nextdoor.com, X and the Mail on line rather than this woke forum Unless you are being facetious. If so, got me 😜 -

I've posted the above question many times over the years and a number of you refused to get into any debate. I get it that you don't like the ULEZ, LTNs, CPZs but driving is a lifestyle. You should be prepared to have alternative options, or just say that you don't want any restrictions. Here's some arguments you can use - not for government to tell us what to do, I can't make a change on my own without everyone doing similar, deaths from air quality and road traffic collisions aren't that high and don't justify measures, it will hit my pocket and national growth, nationally we can't do it all on our own if the big polluters don't do similar, last two are Farages arguments, and technology will sort everything out ,(Trump). You could also argue that we have passed the tipping point on damage to the environment so we may as well keep playing our fiddle whilst Rome and the world burn. -
CPZ in Dulwich Village ward to go live on January 6
malumbu replied to Glemham's topic in Roads & Transport
Why the personal comment? I do bugger all driving, occasional holiday, very occasional shopping. Nothing leisure or work, all by foot, bike or public transport. Like virtually alI of us i could do more on all aspects of lifestyle but that is for a different thread. I can also look back on my unenlightened past. I know people who went to school with Faridge, where that is how his name was pronounced. It amuses me that he has adopted the French soft g. So the question is what should we be doing not what am I doing. Fuel duty/motoring taxes overhaul still seems to be some way off so meanwhile local authorities have to do government's job. -

The Climate Change Committee report that we are missing our carbon targets. What are the alternative proposals from those that oppose measures that should help reduce the number of car journeys? Asking people nicely doesn't work. The car manufacturers want us to super size our cars then bleat on that targets on EVs are unfair. Carbon reduction targets are set in law that all the main parties but one support. The alternative is Faridge (the name is pronounced with a hard g, not the soft g as he pronounces it) and co who would ditch net zero. Just be honest if that is your view -

That is an official term that the authorities use. I will put it in quotation marks next time. I hope my post is helpful in stopping speculation and rubber necking. -

Good news is that injury was not life threatening or life changing. -
Great suggestion for letting the environment recover. We tried the biblical plague but that didn't work. Not sure if holding your breath is a solution to over-population, pollution, species extinctions and loss of diversity, erosion of the earth's crust, increase in climate change gases, extreme weather events, melting of glaciers and land ice, warming of the oceans, changes in currents, and perturbations of the atmosphere and natural environment, but we could give it a go. Glad to hear that Mr Farage is right....

Is this an anti Starmer, anti Miliband or climate change denial thread. Or all three I'd love to know, I'm all ears.

Council have followed proper process. If you think otherwise you will have to make an application for a Judicial Review of the decision. The letter and links above look fairly thorough. You will need deep pockets for a JR, and if unsuccessful may be hit with costs. I've been involved with two JRs for two different councils. Following controversial planning decisions. One failed at JR and one was rejected at the application stage ie didn't go to hearing. Whilst both failed funnily enough the developer pulled out on both occasions. That's all my advice on Judicial Reviews. -

It sounds like they did listen and therefore they reduced the area. Timing is clearly aimed at those who either park to drop kids off or leave their car and commute from the station. Are you against the principle, or the way it has been announced. There are numerous threads on CPZs and other measures to encourage less driving, and it has been stated many times that a consultation is not a referendum. You talk about traveling to work. Most people in London use public transport. I am not sure why drivers need any special privileges. -
Anyone any experience? The Post Office stopped selling these this year, apparently some shops with Paypoint do but from the look of it none locally

Dangerous redesign Hunts Slip Road - Dulwich Estate
malumbu replied to Beauchamp1's topic in Roads & Transport
The parking is for school drop off. Schools should be discouraging this. As we all know much of the morning congestion is due to parents driving kids to school. -
I expect that storms do far more damage than heavy snow. I'm certainly not planning to go sledging at Hornimam gardens today. Some of us will recall the destruction of the massive storm in October 1987

FTSE is steady near an all time high. The knocking Labour that is expected from the right wing rags seems to have become infectious. If I Was PM I'd just tell them all to FO. I'm far more interested in last night's Questiontime, and the arrogance of Farage (also could be applied to Johnson, Clarkson and others who do not answer questions, shoulder no blame and go into pantomime mode when put on the spot). So Mr Farage, Brexit has hit our economy badly. And he takes no blame, whilst he was happy to stir up anti-immigrant fervour following the Southport tragedy. I suggest you lay off Labour and focus on those that deserve our disgust.

I heard about this before our last move over twenty years ago. And that it was generally not recommended. I may have better sources of information than many. I'm pretty sure that this was before most got their information on line, I was interested to know why many had taken this out.

Should cyclists have the same speed restrictions as motor vehicles?
malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
I went to Tooting Blood Centre tonight and most two wheelers were illegal ebikes delivering takeaways, all bar two had no lights. I don't normally present my subjective evidence, but hey others like to do so. Weather was evil and any sensible pedal cyclist would be home preparing themselves to watch Questiontime. Anyway following the silly consultation the last lot did on ebikes the relevant parliamentary committee came up with the following: PACTS recommends that the Government proceeds with earlier proposals presented by Transport Minister Baroness Vere, in May 2022, and creates a new low-speed zero-emissions vehicle category. That more considered approach would enable appropriate regulations to be drawn up for the manufacture and use of a range of new vehicles. These may include those which are purely electric powered and low speed, possibly, but not limited, to the form of a pedal cycle providing means for able and less-abled people to travel with or without cargo. But the last government ignored this and don't know Starmer's views. I may write to Ellie on the subject. -
Not sure what point you are making I have long since been aware of the issues, and would never have gone for it. Maybe it cannot be applied without capturing damp. I question why government part funded it. But I also question why individuals did not do their own research. This took me five second, it took longer to cut and paste it here: Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors The RICS advises homeowners to get independent advice from a qualified professional who is not affiliated with the installer or manufacturer. They also recommend not installing spray foam in listed or protected buildings without prior consent. Property Care Association The PCA recommends that homeowners carry out appropriate checks to determine if spray foam is suitable for their roof. They also created a protocol for surveyors and lenders to make informed decisions about properties with spray foam insulation. HomeOwners Alliance The HomeOwners Alliance recommends that homeowners avoid installing spray foam roof insulation.

Talking about another local authority planning officers, they were very helpful for both those wanting to extend, and those possibly objecting, in years gone by. Often their is a compromise that both parties will be reasonably happy with and/or will more likely get approved. Back to the value of getting on with those who may be affected. I'm not sure how well resourced Southwark are, and whether they will actually come out as they may have done in the past. I expect that numbers of planning officers have been cut over recent years as local authorities tighten their belts. I used to be active in objections to developments, starting with the plans for the multiplex at the old Crystal Palace, which the developer pulled out of in 2001. I consider a lot of residential developments are ugly, not improving the streetscape, and sometimes too damn large. I've long since stopped getting bothered, in any case regulations are far more liberal nowadays. I only object every few years or so, with the hope that it is considered at planning committee. I'm sure that your plans don't lead to any of the above issues, but I don't know where you live and rest assured I wont be getting involved! There's a story for the pub another time, it involved a local website (not this one) and got very acrimonious. South London Press get involved, and the police. The internet never forgets. Not sharing any other information but I'll say a bit more via PM/DM if anyone is intrigued. Have to be careful!
