West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support
malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
You've lost me. Car occupancy has fallen. More people in a car ie sharing journeys is surely one way of reducing the number of cars/journeys, improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions. That is why some countries have high occupancy vehicle lanes. There are a few of you who just say no no no. I offer a good example and get slated. I'll let you get on with your naval gazing and car counting. Rather than encouraging and supporting change. -
West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support
malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
Qualitatively if you make it more difficult for people to drive some will look for alternative means of transport or, dare i suggest, share lifts. Drivers behaviour makes this more challenging often being engrained. Some are particularly difficult like Raptorman so you'd probably need to go for a nuclear option like car free days. -

Dulwich Village CPZ Statutory Consultation
malumbu replied to Charles Martel's topic in Roads & Transport
Thanks, you've just made the case why Dulwich needs a CPZ. Let's face it, it is educated, often wealthy, professionals who agree with the need to take action to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions yet when it affects them ... It would be great if the anti this that and other campaigns had alternative solutions. They don't. -
Ancestry.com appear to have much of the market.

Funnily enough I had had a close pass, quite slow on the South Circ, but it had washed over me. And tempting fate some driver on a side road this evening hit about 60mph so I had to get out of the way. We had a pleasant exchange of words. But no point in starting yet another thread on abusive road users.
-
Most of the time when I see daft things on the road I shrug my shoulders, think of zen/karma and get on with my day. I'm not compelled to post on social media. Although I spent an hour or two around Dulwich today although sadly didn't see anything exciting. A coach let me turn right into Lordship Lane, and then a car driver let me on the other side. I thanked both and we shared a smile. Perhaps I should start a thread up about road users behaving well Edited to add, I cycled twice through Dulwich Square, I didn't see any speeding bikes coming into conflict with pedestrians. Probably an unusual day.

Your post is a little confusing, what were the father and child doing? For balance I cycled along Brenchley Gardens a couple of Sundays ago in the evening, there was a long line of cars coming towards Forest Hill Road, one car decides to overtake the whole line driving perhaps 60mph or more. This cyclist had to get out of the speeding car's way. On Friday I was walking on the same road. There were two electric bikes, looking like small trails motorbikes. No lights, no helmets, no registration plates, no doubt no insurance. Traveling well above the 20mph speed limit, weaving in and out of the cars, then came back the other way doing the same, and then returned for a further go. Perhaps re-title the thread as inconsiderate road users, rather than yet another thread complaining about cyclists.

Dulwich Hill Ward Panel Meeting - Update
malumbu replied to SNT - Dulwich Hill's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks Pugwash, I feel that there is more that can be done about cash for crash, but rather than openly criticise the authorities, as can happen on other threads, I'll sent you a PM. -
Police Misreporting Crime with support of Southwark Council
malumbu replied to JMK's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You have made serious accusations against the police and you have now used a scattergun approach to support your views by putting it out to the masses. Whatever my issues with the police, and I have no shortage, I'd use the processes in place to complain and seek action, rather than jury by the masses. And if This fails I'd then go to my elected representative. I'm keeping my stories, that may or not be representative of systematic incompetence or corruption, to the pub. -
Police Misreporting Crime with support of Southwark Council
malumbu replied to JMK's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This is legally a rather inappropriate post. You have appropriate avenues to go through if you want to complain about the police. I'm not sure why you have bought Southwark into this. I'll leave it to admin whether it is deleted -
This us vs them is tiresome and unhelpful.
-
Pro LTN lobby, there is your issue, some fictious group that are undermining our society. If you move away from this us Vs them mentally then there could be some rational debate.

I'm starting to enjoy your posts now.

Irrational hatred of cyclists puzzles me. The poster above appears to have named themselves after a large pick up vehicle so perhaps is of the view that cyclists should not be on the road, pavement or anywhere else. Do you cycle yourself. Others profess to cycle, and not be anti-cyclist, but posts suggest otherwise. Blaming cyclists for LTNs surely cannot be the explanation. Looking on line came up with a few explanations. This one I liked: "Because when you behave like a car, leaving lots of space, being 100% strict at lights and crossings, you're slowing them down, and when you're not behaving like a car, taking advantage of being smaller, more nimble, and pre-empting green lights to safely get away from the cars, you p them off because they can't do the same." So frustration at journey times being quicker for bikes in many urban journeys perhaps has some role to play. I thought that this article in the Guardian may be more illuminating: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/aug/30/why-do-some-people-hate-cyclists-so-much As for statistics for road users killed and seriously injured not really sure why this was posted here, beyond that it is too many. I and others reach for the stats from time to time to show that cars are far more likely to harm you, but I'm not arguing car vs bike on this thread, which in any case drags you down manufactured culture wars. I did participate in some banter about the London 2012 Olympics on one thread, suggesting somebody who really had detested them could get some therapy, the response took this in good spirit. But I do worry that some of you wake up in the morning and immediately start hating cyclists. There are so many more things in life to rail about. Crime against the individual including physical and physiological harm, crime as a whole, cover-ups and incompetence by the authorities (eg post office, Hillsborough, Covid and Grenfell),. climate change and geopolitics. Not that I expect to change your minds.

Weird in a good way I hope!

Have you ridden a Lime Bike without the motor running. Very heavy, so can't see them going much over 14mph. What is recommended speed in any case? I can keep up with traffic on the flat 20mph and I am no spring chicken. They are doing twice that at the velodrome, very exciting, come on down!

With a number of anti-cyclist threads, or ones that evolve into anti-cyclists, it's difficult to know where to post. Anyway as regards to cyclists on pavements, firstly the title of this thread is sensational/shows a hardly hidden agenda. "cycling on pavements' would have been adequate. Cyclists are not taking over the pavements. As for whether this is a nuisance and often not justified (my position) to "cyclists of all sorts, including those riding fully electric bikes which aren't actually pedal cycles, are mowing down thousands" depends on your perspective. Starting point would be to look at who these cyclists are and how best to dissuade them. Those with kids - by 10 or 11 with training and adult supervision families can cycle on our roads without too much risk. But I don't know how you get over the increasing risk aversion of the modern parent. The more that cycle on the road, the more normal this becomes and the better for cycling. Those that should generally know better. Dunno why they do this beyond not thinking about it. That's probably an information and good citizen thing. Those that are rebelling from teenager to those in their 20s. That's an anti social behaviour thing and goes beyond cycling on pavements and includes other behaviour - vandalism, graffiti, litter and wearing a loud shirt in a built up area that are waving two fingers to the world. Some is simply growing up, but this seems a societal issue and an issue for the government of the day, schools, parents, youth workers etc etc. But do we want a world like Singapore? certainly garage, punk, ska, rap, and grime would never have happened. Anyway I am sure I've said all this before. Rational debate rather than knee jerk please. I found this interesting guidance on cycling and the law: https://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/community/featured/cycling-and-the-law Covers many of the anti-cyclist sentiment on this forum Picking up on one issue - why aren't you using the bally cycle lane (have had that abuse from time to time) 8. You’re not obliged to use that roadside cycle lane or cycle track Some drivers might not like it but there’s no requirement for cyclists to use cycle lanes (on roads) or cycle tracks (separate from the carriageway). “While such facilities are provided for reasons of safety, cyclists may exercise their judgement and are not obliged to use them”, says Rule 61. It’s just as well, because some UK bike paths aren’t fit for purpose.

ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
And an even lower score for you in not comprehending my post. This is people objecting to measures that impinge on motorists. That is not the majority of motorists who either are on side, not bothered or grumpily accept it. The protests in Oxford against LTNs and the fabricated notion of 15 minute cities being imposed, were very much infiltrated by the conspiracy theorist brigade who no doubt joined in some of the anti ULEZ expansion campaigns. -
We are in "one of UK's best places to live" 🤣
malumbu replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Worried as thought I had this place for my self, a few builders and old school locals. The final pub from the old days about to go trendy? Posted in the past how I loved the Crystal Palace Tavern, it's dilapidation, quizzes and occasionally the footy. Very different and of course much more successful now bit haven't been in it since. -

Hopefully smokeless fuel (coal), rather than wood. Even properly seasoned asd dry wood produces smoke.
