  1. Without police presence unless you have evidence, in particular video, the police are unlikely to charge someone for dangerous driving. and CPS recommend going to court on this charge. Most prosecutions are for careless driving, which covers a wide range of offences but has a lower bar. So another road user could collide into me, whilst speeding, on their phone, or even looking at their watch, and whilst this clearly is 'dangerous' they could be charged with careless driving. So in the eyes of the person on the street it is irrelevant if the driver was careless or dangerous. And as no harm to a person I expect even less likely that someone would be charged with dangerous driving on this occasion.
  2. Deleted the first line questioning the previous post, leaving copious advice on saving money. MHG. 😃
  3. A discussion on diversity is more interesting to me than reporting transgressions, That is not really a discussion. No doubt the range of cyclists is broader than before. But it, like most activities in London including work, education and leisure, will not, and cannot, fully reflect the make up of the capital, A good comparison is if you take a trip to Dulwich Park and to Horniman Gardens, and whilst it's not a mono culture, it will be predominantly middle class. Horniman in particular strives to be diverse, at times when they have events targeting the young, there is some success, But go into the galleries and most days of the week and it is not like that. How you engineer and or legislate for this I don't know without middle England getting all angry and talking about woke agendas (what a horrid pejorative term this is for people making the world a better and more equitable place). The Met has made big efforts following the charge of institutional racism not once but twice, but in a 2020 question to the Mayor: "Recent figures on ethnic diversity in UK police forces showed that although black individuals make up 13.3% of London's population only 3.5% of Met Police officers are black. Furthermore, those of Asian heritage make up 17% of London's population, but only make up 5.9% of Met officers" Relevance to cycling? I doubt whether you can say it is just white middle class cyclists that have led to some of the annoyance expressed by some on this thread.
  4. Back to the conversation about diversity. Thought I had posted this earlier. This Wiill Norman chap appears to be getting involved https://bikebiz.com/london-cycling-commissioner-sets-sights-on-diversity/
  5. Please stick to your own streets. I don't understand why you need to go further. We are pretty child friendly round our way. Pumpkins are often put out to say it is OK to knock. Why do you think it is OK to other locations.
  6. No people on this site are (demonising cyclists, in particular white middle class male cyclists). I assumed that as you had raised the issue about diversity, it was something that you were keen on. I am, and I have done something about it. But that is my private matter.
  7. Nicholas has been teaching in the area for decades https://www.facebook.com/passplus7/?locale=en_GB But.... noting what you say about not having to drive.,,,, perhaps consider learning in an electric vehicle as they will be driving them in years to come
  8. It is good that you are looking to increase the diversity of cyclists. Perhaps you could do more to championing this mode of transport, rather than demonising cyclists, including white middle class males. This will Norman chap appears to be getting involved https://bikebiz.com/london-cycling-commissioner-sets-sights-on-diversity/
  9. Mayor Khan was a Transport minister. Mayor Burnham was Culture then Health Secretary. I understand they were both good at these jobs. Unlike PM and Mayor Johnson. I thought that you would be better informed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-34923879 https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/sadiq-khan-announces-independent-review-into-tfl-funding-after-covid-19-shutdown/
  10. There are a lot of people who are not white middle class that cycle.
  11. Must be a full time job looking for dirt on Southwark and Mayor Khan. Prey tell me why this is relevant to EDF?
  12. If you were not so infatuated with Mayor Khan you would maybe be aware, as I have posted before, that Mayor Johnson screwed things up with his settlement with the then Tory government - Covid was a disaster for TfL and then Johnson and his Transport Secretary played hardball with roles were reversed, ie Johnson was PM. Mayor Khan should be given credit for getting things back on track and London still has the best public transport in the country
  13. Negotiation - start off with an optimistic request and usually settle with your bottom line. This looking for dirt at every opportunity is tiresome.
  14. Also would be useful to hear what others on this site who are prolific in posting their views opposing ULEZ, LTNs, CPZs and the like think of Shuntman's views? Like it or not some will associate you with Shuntman. We have at least two Shuntman's on our street Whatsapp. Shuntman appears to be shut man as he has nicely closed down some conversations, I'm impressed 👍
  15. What's your endgame Shuntman? What sort of society do you envisage? What is your new world order? I'd love to know
  16. So despite Thames water dire record, we should wash our hands (ha ha) of playing our part? That seems to be a rather selfish view.
  17. More fool you. I replaced the old lead pipes in the house myself. No house in this day and age should have lead. It's not a heritage thing. TW replaced the old lead mains FOC, so the leak actually worked in my benefit. I got a geezer from North Kent to do the final section into my property and as I am technically competent he charged me a good rate. Plant a drought garden if you are bothered about watering it and the cost. Or sort out some grey watering recycling. We were given the option of a water meter. It's worked for us. I don't like TW. Something else I don't like is scare stories to get you to insure your pipes and drains, other utilities like BG do similar for your boiler. But this, confident, well informed customer has no issues with a meter.
  18. Penguin you state that water meters are some sort of rip off, they aren't, Probably the most respected consumer journalist Martin Lewis/MSE: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/cut-water-bills/ If there are more bedrooms in your home than people, or the same number, check out getting a meter. However bad a company is, if they do something right (ie my water leak) then this should be acknowledged. I worry with all the negativity posted on EDF people cannot read up on the subject, to get a more informed and balanced view.
  19. Oh dear, I thought conspiracy theories were left to transport section Water companies by law have to manage drinking water resources and promote/deliver efficient use. Water meters are one way of helping to achieve this. We, like most on water meters, have saved money doing this. Whist we use a bath, we do not water the grass and use grey water and water butts to water the plants. We do not have a swimming pool, do have a water saving toilet, and whether we choose to flush it for number 1s is our business! What's not to like? Bills were compared before and after, before we switched. The leak happened some time after we had switched and Thames Water not only replaced our lead pipe, to the boundary with the house, but discounted our bills to normal during the time of the leak No fan of the company, the wastage of water through the ageing system, illegal discharges of sewage, the continual big leaks and roadworks, the business model and the privatasation of this and the other utilities. But there is no sinister dark arts/they are "they are trying to control you". Recommend some reading https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7342/
  20. The Horniman museum feels like a creche at times, parents chatting or looking at their phones allowing the kids to run around. I went to the Eden Project a few years ago and there were signs not to bother the species of birds that inhabit the ground in tropical areas, they are probably flightless. I saw a three or four your old chasing them, and foolishly told him to stop rather than tell the parents. I got a how dare you tell our child what to do. How dare you let your child run amok when there are signs telling you not to do this. etc etc Oh dear I have turned into my father.
  21. Because it obviously was not a scam, and the subject quickly changed to the matter in hand, ie a leak. I've contributed positively to the discussion but I am finding the title misleading, It was put up in good faith, and perhaps time to change it. Sensible suggestion? If you didn't like what I said would have been easier to ignore it rather than get into a pointless argument.
  22. Don't really understand why you, or other passengers, did not press the crew button and ask them to ask the parent/s to look after the child. It was dangerous. Including to the child. Confused.
  23. In deed, nutter is the appropriate term. You appear to have identified as one. So a few facts, medical experts, epidemiologists (people who look at statistics on illness and death) and other experts have determined that Nitrogen dioxide and soot particles are toxic. In amounts seen in ambient air, that is the stuff that we breath in, they lead to lung and heart issues, and other illnesses. The main source is from motor vehicles. A coroners' court in Lewisham found that air pollution was the cause of death of a teenager. 'Reduce the number of older more polluting vehicles with newer cleaner vehicles will reduce this pollution. Until maybe 15 years ago education and knowledge was seen to be a good thing, something we should aspire to, and something that would improve society. And then along came the populist politicians, most from rather entitled backgrounds, money, private education and the like, spreading the message that it is good to look down on expertise and education, and that we can all find information that supports some extreme counter-argument, particularly on line. And people fall for this. Generally this nonsense is shared on FB, Nextdoor.com and LinkedIn. Not often here You ask what the multiple factors are that determine levels of pollution, these include: Weather, atmospheric turbulence, wind direction, determines how pollution is dispersed Topography (hills etc) Urban environment, buildings can stop pollution dispersing, trees and greenery can trap pollution Vehicle speed and density Vehicle type, trucks, buses, cars, motorbikes, diesel/petrol, electric, exhaust treatment and the condition of this, engine tuning, engine condition, condition of air filters, temperature of the exhaust. How vehicles are driven, smoother driving = less emissions Can you tell me all about these? So this is not an easy thing to assess going forward (you cannot measure things that have not happened). Forecasting the weather is a similar matter, and the development of super computers in the 60s and 70s, ultimately leading to the digital age we now live in. But there are downsides too, including the amount of nonsense made up that is on line. Going back to the start of my conversation above https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercomputer I'm not sure if you are for real or some hoax trying to stir things up (and if you are, well you've caught me out, but on the positive allowed me to post some truths).
  24. Perhaps the OP could change the title of this thread as clearly nobody is being scammed. Or Admin.
