Here we go again, another thread that has turned into an anti cycling one. Why oh why for a number of you are cyclists public enemy number 1? Anyway to go back to the original thread, I suggest that you contact Lime to enquire if their bikes can go above the legal limit of 14mph. I have no idea on whether you can override this, I couldn't find any boy racers on YouTube doing this, As for illegal ebikes, whether they are those already not allowed on the road (twist and go) , unless the vehicle is registered, taxed, insured and the rider has an appropriate license (as they are electric motorbikes) or those that have been modified, they are not pedal cycles, and should not be compared with them. I'm sure there was a thread already on concerns.

Dulwich Village CPZ Statutory Consultation
malumbu replied to Charles Martel's topic in Roads & Transport
Irrespective of your position you must agree that opposetheCPZ.org are a pompous lot - we demand this, we demand that To state "We share the Council’s objectives in the Streets for People strategy to reduce traffic, improve air quality and enable safe cycling and walking." without proposals on how to deliver this is disingenuous at the best. -
Such a shame the Odeon and bowling at Surrey Quays has gone
malumbu replied to Rockets's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I expect few on this site can lecture about the evils of gentrification, as we live in a very gentrified area and many have benefitted from this. It's good to poke fun, self- deprecating. There is a wider discussion on affordable housing, which the new government needs to address. Meanwhile as rental costs and cost of housing goes up many will move to outer boroughs and beyond. Lounge talk though. -

Odd comment about high end development at Surrey Quays - when the docks went most of the area became very gentrified, thirty plus years ago There's the odd bit of old school working class left. Go a mile the other way, and very old school, but I don't see anyone reminiscing about closed pubs off Trundleys Road and the like , the loss of New Cross Greyhound stadium or the Venue -
And, within limits of your own personal safety, go and have a look. The presence of an onlooker can deter an attack or de-escalate a domestic argument

I think you are talking about the gangs of Bretons that would cycle selling onions and garlic. There is a wonderful museum to 'Johnny Onion's in Roscoff, well worth a visit and you can indulge yourself in Breton music whilst you are at it. Although I thought the French onion sellers died out in the 50s -

I visit Decathlon from time to time but as others have said regards to the cinema there are good alternatives nearby and London desperately needs housing. Separately it can be horrid and congested in the area, although I only ever cycle or use public transport to get there. There are some lovely walks in that area, obviously the river, but also Stave Hill and the other green areas that were formally small docks. You can continue the walk to the farm and then onto the Dog and Bell at Deptford for lunch. -
I didn't know that Dave Hill of Slade was also into local politics. His band mate Noddy champions cycling:

Recommendations for good African restaurants in the area?
malumbu replied to Katherty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's a large continent with very different food, what does OP want? West African, North etc etc. -
Nissan leaf and other medium/small EVs well below 2 tonnes. The motor industry has been supersizing cars for years and we buy them whether we need them or not

Children cycling on the pavement , and cycle training
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If the road is residential with light traffic then it should be fine for children to cycle on, dependent on their age with or without adult supervision. West Sussex offer family cycle training: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-safety/one-to-one-cycle-training/ Year six's should have also had the opportunity to have cycle training at scool: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-safety/cycle-safety-courses-for-schoolchildren/#level-2-term-time-course And they also offer holiday courses and advanced children's courses: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-safety/cycle-safety-courses-for-schoolchildren/bikeability-level-3-booking-form/ Finally the school should have a travel plan to reduce the reliance on being driven to school and increase active travel. -

You've missed out gridlock 24/7 due to the incompetence of the local authority and disproportionate influence of righteous cyclists. A greengrocer and the Christmas queues already forming outside William Rose blocking the pavements. This place sounds dreadful. I'll not be visiting. Well not today. Maybe Saturday. Although could do with some secure bike parking. -
it happens, no domestic circuits burned out, or planes fell out of the sky.

West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support
malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
I'm bored of the LTN posts. Not really discussions are they? I expect the challenge to be unsuccessful, and that elsewhere the development of the Court Lane junction be a success. Even more measures please, including schools taking rougher action. I'm a fan of Lambeth and hope that my other local boroughs, Southwark and Lewisham do more. Not so hopeful about Bromley and Croydon ... -
Because it is not a priority for the police, but they do take action, many 1000s are prosecuted each year, the numbers were fallen due no doubt social pressures as well as increased number of points and no doubt the size of the fine. Interesting reading here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/seatbelt-and-mobile-phone-use-surveys-2023/mobile-phone-use-by-drivers-england-2023 I'm on the road almost daily and I see maybe twenty or thirty a year, of course 20 or 30 too many. The above report shows that it is vans more than cars and two thirds holding the phone as opposed to having it to the ear, many no doubt texting, or on dating sites (that last comment is not facetious). As an experienced cyclist I can tell from the driving more often than not that they are on their phone, and tell them to get off it. Others I know will record this on their helmet cam and pass onto the police. Yes it is dangerous and yes government should consider what more can be done. I personally think it is dreadful behaviour. But if you go to some countries it is the norm. This could be used at speed awareness courses, schools, public information campaigns, test centres etc. from the film Whiplash where he has a bad crash after just being on his phone. Not sure what you mean by experiment. Its just another evolution of mass and one to one communications from drumming, to beacons/smoke signals, semaphore, telegraph and so on. All came with massive improvements to life but no doubt downsides. Did you hear about the argument between ships on the same side during the Napoleonic Wars as they got their semaphore flats in a twist? Now etiquette is another thing and it appears that 95% of Whatsapp users don't understand this. I posted a guide to common sense on Whatsapp on a thread here a couple of years ago eg don't have private conversations on a group chat, but there was no discussion. I find the Whatson Section, for sale and recommendations very useful. There appear to be far too many angry people on some of the other threads. This Forum seemed to have peaked in constructive discussion a few years ago, judged by the massive decline in wider chats on the Lounge. Edited that I have a wide definition of social media as per OED: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking [eg this site, WhatsApp] In respect to the nonsense, lies, propganda, hate crime etc I expect we had this ever since humans learned to communicate, eg 1930s Germany or from Wiki: primitive forms of propaganda have been a human activity as far back as reliable recorded evidence exists. The Behistun Inscription (c. 515 BC) detailing the rise of Darius I to the Persian throne is viewed by most historians as an early example of propaganda. Of course it doesn't make things right and a headache for centrist governments and politicians globally.

Heavens, everyone knows better in hindsight. But it's a question of what is acceptable to society. I want reductions in the number of killed and seriously injured😞 which if you look at my post on another thread has plateaued. 20 mph in more areas is surely one way forward. If you feel that current KSI numbers are acceptable and oppose further measures due to some fabricated culture war or you don't believe that rights to driving should not be curtailed then that is disappointing. It's a shame that anger from a minority over local measures to reduce emissions, reduce car journeys and promote active and sustainable travel have spilled over into anything affecting driving, including policies to improve road safety.
