  1. Nope, this thread by the title is about the Gala, including those that may enjoy it/support it/have a good time. I'm indifferent but in my time have been to many festivals and understand that not all locals will be in support. But don't agree with just limiting it about the issues.
  2. It's national government so as well as representing your constituency you are also part of the democratic process for how the country is run, including foreign policy. Think it is important to educate our children about democracy. Something we didn't do at school. I've spoken to my MPs both in person, in the old days by letter, and now e mail.
  3. Yes it's pointless filling it in. In deed a pointless exercise in any case, like consulting whether people would like more pay. Although I did enjoy filling it in pre GE announcement.
  4. 10% leeway is an urban myth, stems from the time when speedos were generally several percent out. I know so many people who have done speed awareness courses, some even managing to get away with it twice. There is a general bravado - oh this is pointless, then some admit how it did change their attitude. I've not heard of anyone being fined for 21mph. 20mph will just be normal in years to come. Good. And roll on the time when the younger generation will only learn to drive as a new skill, and for occasional use, as with a swipe they will organise their personal mobility. Sadly for most currently on the road, the only training they will go on after passing their test, is a speed awareness course. Pass your test at 17, drive till 97, 80 years without training? Most drivers would fail if we were suddenly asked to take their test now.
  5. Local authorities are not responsible for speed cameras/enforcement, that is the police, and money goes to central government. https://www.brake.org.uk/get-involved/take-action/mybrake/knowledge-centre/speed/speed-enforcement Can't find any year by year stats on convictions, around a million people get fixed penalty notices, a million speed awareness courses. Heck that is a number of people caught speeding. Don't believe that there is any political push to increase speed limit enforcement. But as with contravening local authority restrictions, if you risk getting a fine. Consultation is now dead due to the General Election.
  6. Constituency MP is someone who helps constituents both individually and collectively. I've regularly spoken with mine. Have you?
  7. So some cyclists use the pavement. Some will be because they are at age that you rebel. Some do it as they don't really think about it. Some do it because it may save time. Some do it because they are rightly or wrongly afraid of the road. There is an adult conversation to be had about good citizenship, sharing road space, lighter touch nudges such as what was used to encourage people to bag their dog poo, softer and harder enforcement. On the latter the government and other authorities do not see this as high priority. For me it is an occasional nuisance and it gets me thinking how best to discourage it, but illegal powered two wheelers are a much bigger issue. And again government and the authorities are ducking this issue The difficulty with this thread, from the outset with the title: "cyclists taking over the paths" - they clearly are not - it attracts polarised views, and I expect for some real and perceived issues how active travel has impacted on the freedoms to drive, The silly new law is now gone, and Sunak's desperate attempt to win over motorists in his drivers' strategy seems to have failed. Early rumblings are not that the manufactured culture war is going to feature greatly in the upcoming election, it seems to be focusing on immigration, security and the economy, but we shall see. I tend to go through my MP on issues that concern me, but spoiler alert, not really been impressed with the person who is likely to be the MP for SE22 on July 5th in engaging with things that are important to me, let alone campaigning on local issues. That reminds me I have a follow up email.
  8. Ride London this Sunday, a celebration of cycling https://www.ridelondon.co.uk/our-rides/ridelondon-freecycle Feeder ride organised by Southwark Cyclists - see events page
  9. Hope this helps: https://www.arsenal.com/visit-rwanda
  10. Damn, I was about to start a thread with a countdown. It's 44 days but I'd prefer a tracker in seconds to around 03.00 on 5 July. Good news is some of the nonsense legislation they were trying to rush through will be stopped. Does it mean that the infected blood products compensation scheme will be put back, and similarly post office sub-postmasters stuff will go on hold as well? I expect the latter is still dependent on the outcome of the inquiry, which I feel Sunak should not have upstaged this in the day that Paula Vennels gives evidence. I'm hoping that the new government will do a lot more to support the environment, cleaner rivers, air etc.
  11. Well I am a transport professional with experience on driving standards, pollution, sustainable transport, road design etc. The redesign, moving from speed humps/cushions, to road narrowing has done nothing to reduce car speeds, generally in excess of 30mph until they brake before the camera, and at times twice this. The narrowing funnels cyclists into the path of drivers, endangering riders. There is not room to overtake a cyclist with a vehicle coming the other way at these narrowing points, and maybe 1 in 20 drivers have no issues with driving close to a cyclist. Meanwhile an excellent article about the silly change in the law, from a local journo, probably one of his best. Read it fully, and reflect, before giving your opinion https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/bike-blog/article/2024/may/21/uk-dangerous-cycling-offence-achieve-nothing
  12. Cheers FH, I've PMd you. I started a thread on schemes such as Brenchley Gardens but got no interest, which is a shame. If we discover more then we can update the forum.
  13. Canvas and Cream in Forest Hill is one of the best places convenient for SE22, a number of buses go there and for those further afield great train/tube connections. You can go for a stroll in Horniman Gardens afterwards, others can say whether their cafe competes with C&C, particularly now it is under new management.
  14. Well now you have asked. Cycle paths are for cyclists so there is no question about 'taking over'. Shared paths are shared so there is no such thing as 'taking over'. Footpaths, from my experience of many decades as a pedestrian, are mainly used by pedestrians so have not been taken over by cyclists.
  15. My word the Tories are desperate. Local roads, decision for local authorities. If you don't like you council, then vote them out.
  16. Well my experience of three decades of cycling in London is that all my near misses with pedestrians is when they step out onto a road without looking. And from the other way round when I dashed out to cross the road in central London without looking so more fool me. Not sure what all this vitriol is about. There are so many bigger issues in society and across the world as a whole, yet a small number of you continue to stoke up conflict. Now about to spread love and peace on this sunny day.
  17. I thought it would be useful to post the a link on regulatory impact assessments, this is a process government goes through in considering new policies, including proportionality and return on investment ie does the means justify the end https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/impact-assessments-guidance-for-government-departments In 2016 the government agreed that it was not worth changing the law. I suspect this time round the assessment was the same, but this was a political decision by a zombie government desperate for votes, and happy to fabricate a culture war as a distraction from their shambolic performance. As for the Thames Route, it's all gravely and hardly a place that I would want to race. I can't imagine the council being their with speed guns and don't know if and how they could enforce this, It's an over the top way of asking people to be more considerate, and would have been cheaper to put a few signs up. It did make me chuckle though as I used it a few times during lockdown, with the number of pedestrians it was very slow and the only annoying people were the bally runners who didn't slow down, do you remember when they were public enemy #1? May see if I can find one of the old threads. Back to cycling on the road, walking over to Nunhead Cemetery yesterday near the race track of Brenchley Gardens, the traffic calming is so bad and endangers cyclists, it would make sense to make the pavements shared walking/cycling. I did post something up yonks ago about Southwark's changes to Brenchley Gardens race track, but sadly got zero interest.
  18. It's disproportionate as the number killed and seriously injured by drivers is so much greater. As Boardman said. Tories did some great stuff on cyclist training, why not a positive message. They have done a lot right.
  19. Thanks for posting, yes this disproportionate focus on cyclists is not helpful. There are much better things that government can do to reduce the number of all road users killed and seriously injured.
  20. More unhelpful advice. Estate agents are regulated. They have to act on behalf of the purchaser and potential buyer under the law. Yes we all know of times they get things wrong, but if that is your starting view then nobody would ever buy or sell through an estate agent. And ditto for views on the Mayor and local authority. You'd never buy anything. That's why there is a whole business for solicitors and legal assistants in conveyancing. And yes, that can go pear shaped too.
  21. That's a bit of a scare story and applies to a housing association, not a local authority. In my brief look through the article it wasn't clear if this was new build or taking over an old development. It refers to increased insurance costs, and in some sectors eg motoring for some this has doubled in the last year Do your homework, ask the estate agent, maybe knock on the neighbour's door and hopefully others here will have first hand experience. Elsewhere 40 years on from right to buy 40 years on, there are dilapidated estates built in the 50s, modern dangerous cladding etc. There again there are some high quality older Peabody and LCC estates out there. The bigger picture is affordable housing in the capital. Elsewhere on this site a discussion on what 2 million buys you. My first purchase was ex council concrete terrace and there had been a warning about the the steel reinforcements corroding. Still standing I understand
  22. In deed the op was about suggestions for bike storage, I'd reacted to the next post that had reverted to Southwark, pesky cyclists and bike theft. Join LCC and ask Southwark Cyclists for advice on alternatives for storage. Come on one of their rides, good to make friends.
  23. I didn't say Southwark in my stats. But "only"? That's a lot of stolen cars. I'm a little confused about what this thread is about. The need for better street parking for bikes? Better parking at home for bikes? Cycle theft and the need to tackle this? Or a general dislike of cyclists and Southwark's policy of encouraging active, healthy, sustainable travel that helps improve air quality. Or maybe all of these😀
  24. You could argue that Southwark also provide free parking space on the street for cars too . And over 100,000 of those get stolen each year.
  25. It was interesting looking back through the discussion a number of years, irrespective of your position the discussion appeared much better humoured than of late. Perhaps a good time to reflect
