I liked the person on the radio news earlier, can't even buy a coffee for 7 Euros (well you can but that's not the point) so move on. He also said I voted to leave, but think we should rejoin. And the second one, oh the expense, the expense. Not necessarily representative of UK society but not far off Edited - Oh dear I looked at the comments, usually there are some lefty trolls that make this fun, but oh my word, straight into anti immigration and casual racism. The Daily Mail really is the Daily Hate.

Weddings, parties anything. Dexys Come on Eileen, bit of the Kaiser Chiefs and Killers, and Gloria Gaynor. I could do that. Not that I'd want to.

I never thought that I'd be taking a more 'Reform' view on this but with 1.4 million unemployed why do we not have the workforce? Didn't Brexit promise us prosperity for all and high skilled jobs? To return to my centre left politics rather than increase the pay and upskill the jobs (I am sure with some creativity the latter can be done) we just drive costs and pay down. Yes of course many of the unemployed who can work don't live in the right area, certainly couldn't afford to live in London (the office cleaners I used to chat with all lived outer boroughs and had two jobs), and it is not a job that can be done remotely.

Interesting, if I expect selective, article from the Guardian about the abuse of cleaners working for the outsourcing firms. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/03/the-cleaner-sacked-for-eating-a-tuna-sandwich I wonder why the anti immigrant parties don't campaign against bringing in labour from South America to keep our offices clean at the lowest cost. Hmm is that because their members and those with similar views don't want to do low paid manual work?

And in deed the new government is committing to active travel including social prescribing, hooray! https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/20/labour-investment-cycling-walking-unprecedented-louise-haigh

I like LCY for its size and convenience but not used it many times and fully appreciate the environmental issues associated with this and all air travel. Governments, perhaps starting with ours need to start taxing aviation carbon emissions, and by whatever means rail travel should be the cheaper option for many locations in Europe rather than being several times the cheapest flights.

well I would have preferred unfettered access but if it means we can get through passport control quicker and not have our passports filled with stamps every time we go to visit our continental neighbours that would be good. Obviously no justification for leaving....

I loved this pub but the move from brewery owned premises to pub chains can be a good thing and bad. One thing is the quality and price of ale which is important to me but perhaps not others. Both the Clockhouse and Dulwich Woodhouse suffered here. As has most of the former Youngs estate of pubs. It's not a case of out with the old and in with the new, but getting a balance as things change. Culturally I think we have lost a lot in recent years and the forementioned pubs are prime examples. If you want pretty pubs in pretty locations with outdoor seating and aren't bothered by anything else both pubs will be perfect. Every so often I give these places a second chance and doing my best to have an open mind, I still come back with the same opinion. But neither are as dreadful as the General Watson Telegraph silly name place. I can hear many disagreeing! So I will give the Clock another go and hopefully be pleasantly pleased. Otherwise Special Brew at the Grove 😀

Could be a number of people- Sister Suzie, Brother John, Martin Luther, Phil and Don, Brother Michael,or Auntie Jean. Paul may know better but not sure if he reads this forum. Edited - as the thread suggested it was naughty kids rather than axe murderers then thought a bit of humour was OK, did I really have to explain this? Although shocked that some of you didn't know the lyrics. I hear you knocking, but you can't come in. Knock knock who's there ? Could this be love that's calling?

Not really sure why Southwark make out that this is some sort of referendum (from the minority who respond to consultations) unless this was instructions from central government, If we waited to go ahead with a consultation that showed more than 50% support with every project then power stations would not be built, new transmission lines erected, railways not improved and dare I say even roads not built. There is always vested interest and those opposing change. And as I am sure I have discussed before if you ask: do you want government to improve services the answer from most will be yes. Do you want to pay more tax, "oh goodness gracious no". It feels the same for air quality, road safety, and reducing carbon emissions. The time to say no is at local and general elections, and there is an overall yes either because people approve, aren't bothered, do not see this as a single issue to vote a political party out (well some do and look where that got them) or the alternative is so dreadful. And a combination of these. So we are planning to close some roads to improve the local area, active travel, and persuade some to drive less. Are these the right roads? Are the timings right? Are penalties appropriate? How can we improve other options? What about vulnerable members of the public? Not close the road? yes or no. There will always be more people who say no for a variety of reasons not just because they are dyed in the wool petrol heads. Interestingly I've felt penalty chargers are a wee bit too high in London, You didn't expect me to say that did you? But there again I have learned the hard way. There is a balance and you do not want to alienate the masses the example being another thread where someone rightly got a penalty notice but complained about those consistently parking on double yellows, zig zags, outside schools etc, which does get my goat. But there again best not get the penalty notice in the first place and make the serial abusers a separate issue. Anyway nothing new here. Almost went into a Del Amitri verse. Perhaps at some point we accept that things aren't going to radically change back and move on.

BTU, not sure if it was on exercise books but how egocentric to invent our own units of measurement

Re earlier post about parked cars disruptung the flow of cars - looked like a carcentric comment, correct me if I was wrong, in urban areas buses are a more efficient and less polluting means of mass transport. I was trying to get a reference and there was an interesting discussion on the skeptics website but once they started talking BTUs I switched off. How unpatriotic

Nice article from Living Streets, not just about Car Free Day (which I first came across when living in Cheshire decades ago) but getting people out on their feet https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/get-involved/world-car-free-day/ Worth looking a the initiative in isolation rather than using it as a stick to bash Southwark Council and others with. I'd do car free days monthly as some cities do overseas. Enjoy.

I like reviews that vary widely, comes across as authentic and it's good to have very different opinions. That said I don't eat meat or fish so most Chinese places aren't great for me. I used to stop off after Friday beers when I worked in town at the takeaway South end of rye Lane, mushroom foo Yung and chips hardly adventurous. In the past at Ma Bo in Liverpool's china town heaven knows what I was eating. Stopped sort of chicken feet but if you eat meat then eat it all! Recommendations of Chinese veggy options always appreciated

Tory leader candidate says we must address the causes of the riots. Hmm 14 years of Tory government, unnecessary austerity and the impact on our communities, a series of dreadful leaders, failed levelling up, the drift to the right and the demonisation of immigrants. And the ginormous elephant in the room. The promise of a better wealthier Britain if we left Europe. Farage, Gove, Johnson, what do you say?
-
Bit personal. I try to avoid personal comments. But if you want to make that accusation you could say that applies to a number of us.

Have a lot to do with schools and SEN and well aware that some have transport laid on. I'd love your evidence that for many this is not a valid option. I doubt it. I'm an able bodied person, who since living and working in London haz cut down to maybe a few dozen hours a year needing to drive of be driven in a private car. I expect that I am representative of many in my transport needs. It feels that the needs of those who have to drive are very much exaggerated by some posting here, who are upset with traffic curbing measures. Edited to add: for clarification the majority of us do have alternatives to private vehicles for many of our journeys. For some individuals/families/groups and/or journeys this may not be the case and there is no argument against this whether it be I need to visit a relative or have a day out at an event.
-
Re earlier comment about children who have to be driven to school due to health issues; for SEN and those with mobility issues free school travel is available. I expect that this only applies to state schools. I expect some use health as an excuse to drive their kids to school. My fave is I drive due to the risk of my child being run over. That is genuine, but not carried out a scientific study.

The Farage/Reform protest (against) stuff is just counter productive playing into his and the Daily Mail/Express's and GB News hands. It's a legit organisation and whilst sentiment may be wrong they will be careful not to overstep the mark and risk police involvement. Trump/Musk a better angle although practicalities more challenging! Was with a group of out of townees yesterday and heard the odd ill informed and possibly casual racist remark but for once in my life it was more easy to understand (clearly not agree) after they had come across a protest with Palestinian flags. So their thoughts, not mine, Londoners are happy to march with other nation's flags but not their own The stiff on X on the anti racist marches also shows how easy it is to knock it.

It's all relative. London probably has the best and cheapest public transport in the country. I expect that everyone in SE22 is within 15 mins walk or bus ride from a station. The PTALs scores are simple comparisons but by this it gives some an excuse to criticise public transport and measures to get us out of cars. Get real!

I stopped driving into central London when I could no longer find free parking. Not that I did it very often. I'm not angry about it and fully agree with paying for parking on many roads.
