Favourite music releases and best gigs of the year
malumbu replied to Earl Aelfheah's topic in The Lounge
Ooohh saw Killing Joke in 85 at Ox Polly, one great big fight in rhythm with the beat. Think "Live like kings and Queens" whilst punching someone. Generally local punks Vs rugby club and more wild west brawl than nasty football violence. jaz got caught up at one stage. Ok back to modern times, Flaming Lips at Troxy, some was just beyond me but stage presence is something else. Mainly folk gigs at Goose, Dulwich Folk Club, kings place and the like. I'll give you my best gigs later. -
Dicky Dirt's, you have to be a certain age to appreciate that

But wouldn't CPZs help improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions Rocks? Would you not agree with my earlier post? Don't you think it is good that some local authorities are trying to do something whilst Sunak goes into reverse with Starmer not far behind him? -

So you don't have any proposals to reduce emissions Charles. Why not? Do you support the status quo? From your post it could be inferred that you don't believe that vehicle emissions harm health or affect the environment. Here's a simple question, if you charge somebody more to park their car if it is an conventional vehicle rather than electric would that not encourage some to switch? If you charged more for a vehicle with higher carbon and air pollution emissions rather than one with lower, would that not encourage some to switch to a more health and environmentally vehicle. If you feel that there is better ways of reducing emissions I'd love to hear. I've been involved in this for ages and it has to be a carrot and a stick. ,A simple win win win way is just getting people to drive smoother, reducing acceleration and braking, share journeys but they wont. Lower fuel bills, more comfortable for you and your passengers, less collisions (and KSIs), less wear and tear. Sadly poor driving is just ingrained and sadly encouraged by the vehicle manufacturers. So changing driver behaviour in this respect is not going to work. -
Lewisham will try to keep it's existing use. They tried hard to keep it as a visual arts centre rather than a pub 30 years ago after the bingo hall closed down, and eventually gave in to Tim Brexit, to his credit kept it's heritage. Try SE23.com - no chat about it at the moment, join the Forest Hill Society www.foresthillsociety.com and/or CAMRA https://sel.camra.org.uk/ I'll keep at ear out.

BFI has published its list: www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/polls/50-best-films-2023?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-gb Sadly I've only seen three, Rye Lane which I was surprised to see in the list, Oppenheimer, and number 1 in the list Killers of the Flower Moon. I'm in a minority for the latter as I though it was too long and tedious. And I can name much longer films that I have enjoyed such as Once Upon a Time in America tops four hours. No The Old Oak. Barbie is in there, I just couldn't go, sorry. I used to see many more fringe films and foreign films when I first came to London being a regular at the Ritzy and the like when they were very much art house, having done similar when living near Oxford and also the Bluecoat when in Liverpool - doesn't have a cinema club any more. Hats off to the Peckham Plex, and yes of course the Plcture House. I should also try Crystal Palace Views my good friends?

I see that Paris are going in much harder on motorists and may up the parking costs for vehicles over 1.6 tonnes. This is particularly aimed at large SUVs. I thought that 1.6 tonnes may catch the utilitarian family estate, but from some quick research most will be under this weight. One Dulwich, concerned that Southwark will copy this good idea, have already started a campaign. As have motorists in Sidcup where there has been a run on gilet jaunes. That was a joke. I am smiling to myself Here is the link: www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/08/paris-mayor-plans-to-triple-suv-parking-tariffs-cut-air-pollution So count yourself fortunate that you are not in Paris. Measures have already included: increasing parking costs and gradually banning diesel vehicles, while expanding the bicycle lane network in the congested capital. The city has reduced the number of on-street parking spaces in order to make drivers use underground parking -
Thinking about East Enders, which mirrors East Dulwich (ho ho) they have to get on with the market inspector, as of course virtually everyone in this very real to life programme has a market stall. I don't think Southwark have a market inspector, but there will be a registration. You could enquire nicely: [email protected]

Beware: Parking inspectors everywhere
malumbu replied to portioncontrol's topic in Roads & Transport
Spartacus, and others, if you have a problem with excessive numbers of enforcement officers then (a) complain to the Council Then you can complain to the National Audit Office This is a useful guide on the latter: www.nao.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Council-accounts-a-guide-to-your-rights.pdf -

<removed - going off topic and not relevant to wider debate> PS why do so many of you treat traffic wardens like they are from another planet? -
Weird how you have turned this into CPZ thread... Check out the council web site for dumped vehicles. Yes it isn't dumped but it may give you some advice. We have a 2012 car, with damage, that parks in our street. It moves from time to time to another local street, but isn't used, beyond shifting it to another street.

Wish there was a nearer Lidl. I cycle to the Sydenham one but always buy too much. More fussy about leaving my bike outside the Peckham one, that is not a blanket slur on Peckham but informed by one of their security people. Khan's let me bring my bike in and will even let me leave it by the till. Another place I always buy too much.

Then take it up with Southwark, your MP, the communities minister or whoever. You are not going to convince me that the above is a common occurrence, the way I see it is you have a big issue with Southwark over LTNs and you are going to look for every bit of dirt on them. If nobody abuses the parking rules then there will be some unemployed enforcement officers in times to come. It's always a balance, to have the correct number of officers to provide a deterrent, and to have too few or too many. Wouldn't you agree with me (for once??) And yes I have been done for parking (in Westminster) to pop into a shop (long long time ago), and yes I have been done for drifting into a bus lane for a few metres, and yes I was unhappy. But life moves on. -

Not sure why you are defending people for parking where they shouldn't or over-running on paid parking. I'd happily take much stronger enforcement on those that regularly park on double lines and zig zags. The <removed comment> as you get on Forest Hill Road by the Turkish Supermarket doesn't wash. Yes, I've had parking fines, when I've took a chance and thought I'd get away on a meter for a few minutes over (yes it was last century) -
Which is the best curry restaurant on Lordship Lane?

It's about heathens, Steppenwolf admits to being one and jasszer isn't. I'm going to Google heathen now to see what it exactly means, or urban dictionary Just had a quick read up. It's a sort of modern paganism based on older Germanic tribes. Interesting and worth it's own read. Always thought it was a bit of an insult but probably a holier than though comment from some Christians

Dulwich Village area-wide CPZ consultation is back!

Changed my commute a few years ago, Underhill Road, Peckham, Canal path, Old Kent Road, Elephant. Use Court Lane when going to Camberwell, Vauxhall and the like. Always happy to chat more, but don't think this thread is about commuting routes -
Seeing that Teslas are in the news following a massive recall I thought I'd take the opportunity to say that I don't like them. This is based on one test drive of the ridiculously fast model X or S around Shepherd's bush. Now the Nissan Leaf, that was a different kettle of fish, having test driven both an early version and a newer one with the mega regen braking on it (the e pedal). I drove around Pimlico with a smile on my face waving to everyone. I had quite fun driving the transit plug in hybrid, mainly due to the control and instrumentation being very retro. I was schmooszed by Toyota, not that thrilled by the Prius plug in (odd car) but had a rare drive in a hydrogen fuel cell car - the Mirai. Official blurb on the Toyota web site gives it a 0 -60 of 0 seconds, must go through some sort of time vortex. Hydrogen cars are nowhere near critical mass in terms of sales yet, but prices have fallen by 10's of thousands for new (so few made couldn't find any second hand ones on sale). Anyway a light hearted thread about EVs you iike and don't like, I hope some Tesla drivers can give an opposite view from my biased one. It would help if you had actually driven an EV. If I buy another car it will be an EV. If you hate the whole concept could you start another thread up please? On autonomous vehicles there is a strict approval scheme that has five classes from memory - a self parking car will be one of the early classes and that has long since been approved. Collision avoidance, white line drifting alerts, and adaptive cruise control are other forms of autonomy, permitted and becoming standard. A quick Google was surprisingly unhelpful - government has adopted the common term self-driving - which is rather simplistic, no doubt as this lot want to be 'down with the people' rather than explain things properly. I'm not sure whether the issues with Tessla had any real significance as no fully autonomous vehicle has yet to be approved for UK roads, Again a subject for another thread.

I used to live near West Heath. When kids from West Heath were transferred to my school (well before I went there) they referred to them as West Heathens. Hopefully that wasn't a hate crime. Looking at the wiki entry no reference to heathens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Heath,_West_Midlands

Dulwich Village area-wide CPZ consultation is back!

I used Court Lane as a daily commute for many years. During rush hour/school run there was always a tail back Kathleen - can we really tell people where to send their kids to school, be it private or state. Schools can, and often do, have measures to reduce environmental impact of journeys to school. -
Should cyclists have the same speed restrictions as motor vehicles?
malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
Depends on your perspective Rocks, I've never gone through Dulwich Square at an unacceptable speed or had any issues with pedestrians. Nor the other way round. But I don't monitor it as much as I expect you do. -

malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
Yes and most motorists do not obey 20 mph speed limits. The police force needs to be doubled in number to enforce this. Don't get me started on pedestrians not looking when crossing the road. -

Kathleen - you've made a good case for a CPZ, to discourage people driving their kids to school. Coaches are preferable as you take dozens of cars off the road. I wish Dulwich College would introduce paid parking on their roads. And if you are concerned about the cost to you, think of the benefits of less congestion, less pollution, lower carbon emissions, wider health benefits as more cycle/walk with safer roads, and less parking pressure for residents. Lots of wins there.
