Entitlement is the biggest battle. Needs to be education that drivers can no longer automatically drive when they want, how they want, what they want, and where they want. If it was seen as a privaledge rather than a right we'd get somewhere. There was an Any Questions a few weeks ago when they asked about 20 mph. All agreed that this was good, but the Tory argued about the personal choice/responsibility rather than compulsory in urban areas. We have speed limits as drivers cannot be trusted to do the right thing. And alcohol limits (the libertarian right argued against this too. One reason why I am not impressed by the outer boroughs.

KOKUM Indian restaurant & bar
malumbu replied to Simeron Lily Patel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm planning to try the South Indian and Sri Lankan places near St George's hospital in Tootling. West Croydon is also a good place. I expect that these places are more down to earth than Kokum - that's not a criticism but a fact. Barbur sets the standard for high end in this area, although now very much fusion. I've only once eaten at the Cinemmon club, fortunately I was being treated £££££. Happy to try your home cooked food, I shared some of my Indian recipes on EDF during lock down. As with the majority of Indians I do not eat meat. The veggy restaurant that the Cheeseblock people ran was great but closed years ago. -
I think it was Rotterdam, or maybe Liverpool, or Rome

Perhaps admin can move the scooters threads to this part of the forum as worthy of further discussion but to also avoid repetition. Like it or not they are here to stay but heaven knows how you best accommodate them AND riders need training

ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
So, back to a point that I frequently make. Has the lack of leadership from firstly the coalition and then Tory governments led to all this mess? A Brown government in 2010 would have led to a national network of Low Emission Zones, as we are seeing ten years later (ULEZ/ Clean Air Zones) as the courts ordered the government to sort out air quality. So we would have had restrictions on more polluting vehicles earlier. The Johnson government DID push the carbon reduction programme, albeit that they dodged the difficult issues - aviation, agriculture and gave in on on shore Wind (and all governments have ducked the nuclear issue since Thatch did a 180 in 1989, which with privatisation of the energy sector led to the energy security/volatility we see now.). Ultimately Johnson would have had to do battle with Sunak over the costs of environmental policies. And Sunak (and the RRRss Transport Sec) has dropped the baton. This has led to a vacuum into which Khan and a few others have stepped in to play their part, not that we all agree on their polices, but surely we are on the same page regards to the government. I've been close to this over most of my career and Today on Weds or Thurs got it right when they had both the Met Office and the CCC on, both criticising politicians for backing off their climate change ambitions. -
Araldite a glass slide anchoring this on either side of a crack and see how long it takes for the slide to break. That will tell you if there is ongoing movement. Source is likely to be clay drying out then getting saturated, tree roots, ground works eg anyone having a new extension or worse still a subterranean development, cracked drains, native American Indian burial ground (as in Poltergeist). Speak to neighbours to see if they have a similar problem. I expect it will be more likely in Edwardian or older properties. As long as you didn't fib to insurers you should be covered, maybe with a hefty excess.

ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
A gentle suggestion Rocks is to pick your battles. Let the good people of Bexley fight the ULEZ, not really sure why you would want to do this. I know you are angry with lefties due to the LTNs and the forthcoming CPZ expansion but methinks you are not making good use of your time on thus thread. Unless you really want to champion the Tory right who don't give a fig about the environment. Surely not. Thinking back to today's great result it also feels like payback for the Brexit boroughs. ULEZ is going to cost them much less than Brexit has harmed me, my family and my wishy washy lefty peer group. Although we of course could all pay more for our personal transport be it car, motorbike or pushbike due to Brexit (ie cost more to buy). And going it alone (and lack of political ambition) means that our environmental industries will fall behind the EU, US and China. Nice link from 'personal responsibility' to 'environmental catastrophe' to Brexit. -
ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
Rocks, Labour won Selby overturning a 20000 majority, not seen since 1945 and a swing of over 25 per cent, not seen for 30 years. This is what they need to celebrate rather than opposing measures that save lives -
Think this is one thing that enforcement officers are keen on. Please report

ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
Pleased with the Court decision that ULEZ extension is legal. Irrespective of any issues the case raised Mayor Khan can now implement the next stage of Mayor Johnson's brainchild. Nobody appears to mention the compromise for those in low income who can change their old diesel for an even older petrol car. That would not make good news. The compromise was proposed under Johnson's time. I'll see if I can get a link. And stuff you Tory counties, Tory boroughs, and for balance the leader of the opposition and wishy washy MPs including mine. I'll be writing Tomy MP again. Anyway hooray! Oh and that pathetic Transport Secretary -
I'd love to know where I have been sensitive about cyclists' behaviour? I've started a discussion about improved training for all road users. But I do think it strange that someone who is a cyclist has invented this all powerful cyclist lobby. I'm pleased that the powers that be listen to cycling groups. I've no issue with cyclists being smug. But some secret freemason type cyclist group pulling the strings as well as being responsible for JFKs assassination, well that's just strange. Obviously the JFK comment is just for emphasis.

Curious. You will happily join in threads slagging off cyclists, but one that does similar for drivers is seen as whataboutery. Whatever that means I think that the person on the Clapham Omnibus may see this as bias.

A reminder as this forum is to debate issues that there is a petition supporting CPZs

I suppose we have become so accustomed to poor driving that we don't notice it unless it is extreme. I'd wager nobody on this forum knows how to drive smoothly in traffic calmed areas. Apart from me, and the only other people I know are a mate in New Zealand and the chap who kindly advised me twenty years ago. A way of doing this is the no braking game, compete with the driver in front. The only bad thing about the Court Lane closure is I can no longer win 13 0 as I would on the odd occasion I drove there in the past. Hands up who gives signal well in advance of the junction? I expect that most of you don't. But as someone cycling on the pavement is rather in your face this gets more traction. And of course that many of you don't like cyclists or the supposed cycle lobby - some of you will not be aware that this is the case as you are cyclists yourself.

Did she stop at the scene and give you her details which I think should include insurance. If not it is a hit and run and report to the police Sounds as if she stopped but then denied hitting you. There will be matching paint at the point of impact. There will be ambulance chaser solicitors you can use if all else fails.

So rather than the clever comments what are you two doing? And if you want to campaign get the government to electrify the whole rail network, prohibit private jets, discourage travelling by air, increase on shore wind. Better than clever remarks.

Nowhere in the BBC report does it say that government told people to buy diesel. It's been seeded in your mind and that of the masses - encouraged by subsequent governments. A returning Labour government in 2010 is likely to have persued a network of Low Emission Zones. Both Labour and then the Tories knew that diesels were spewing out more nitrogen dioxide than they should be and put their faith in tougher international emission standards. Which failed to deliver. In fact may have worsened things due to a larger NO2/NO ratio in the exhaust gases. All governments employ scientists and engineers, and will also support research. And speak to their counterparts across the world in Brussels and Geneva. So none of this was a shock or state secret. The Tories put things on the back burner as enforcement through the EU is painstakingly slow. Defra were trumped by DfT and ultimately tougher action would have been black balled by Treasury. Then two things happened in late 2015, the government lost in the Supreme Court and Emissions Analytics found in a US surveillance projects dodgy things going on with VW diesels. Action had already been announced surprisingly by a Tory Mayor, as much to put two fingers up to his old school chum Dave, after Dave refused to give him more pocket money. So through the ULEZ Johnson pre-empted the network of Clean Air Zones announced by Cameron. Surely none of you can object to reducing the number of older polluting diesels on our roads? And discouraging burning wood.
-
I'd love to know who TOLD you to buy diesels. Rightly the UK moved to carbon based excuse duty. The common rail injection made diesels feel less agricultural and more like petrol cars, with low end torque and better fuel economy suitable for long distance driving. The manufacturers responded with smaller diesel engines even though for mainly urban driving small petrol cars were more suitable. Worse still the manufacturers then persuaded many of us to buy SUVs. On emissions there has been a massive drop in particulates from diesels, such that wood burners can now be a bigger source. Sadly between national states, the EU, in getting the NO2 standard not to deliver, and manufacturers knowing that, not doing more and worse still cheating the test cycles, diesel vehicles became the main source of nitrogen dioxide at street level. Not sure why so many people have a reason not to change their habits. Oh I would do this, but...... Price and range of electric vehicles will improve. Road, brake and tyre wear cause less issues than particles of soot from the internal combustion engine, burning wood, fossil fuels and waste. It's about less and smarter driving. Shame that manufacturers are promoting large EVs rather than sensible city cars. I'll wager that nobody can find a government announcement from the past saying "you have to buy diesel". The most frugal of petrol engines would match diesel CO2 emissions at the height of diesel popularity. Rather than give reasons not to act please do your part in supporting sustainable transport.

What is happening to make you think it is subsidence?

It's refreshing that unlike the Labour leader that some councils are prepared to stick their neck out to take action on the climate emergency.

Just adding and a separate subject, leaving your car idling when stationary for over a minute us about as sensible as selling and eating popcorn at the cinema. Silly but so many people do it with no respect for others. This has been discussed numerous times on the forum and not suggesting a petition

Do you have a large garden? Petrol garden equipment is very annoying in an urban area, I expect usually this is gardening companies but nobody in my area has a large enough garden to need one. Cordless will take over soon. There's a place in Beckenham that services mowers.
-
Sounds like you would be better off using a car club such as Zipcar and occasionally hiring. Probably makes economic sense. When the CPZ arrives I expect a sizeable number will do this freeing up space on our roads. I've done some work with Lambeth and I believe they have pool bikes for staff who need to travel for their work, maybe even electrically assisted ones

Not Southwark specific, most local authorities across the country are doing similar. Write to your MP and ask what government is doing (sfa), why do some many of you immediately put the blame on Southwark? Ah, LTNs of course ...

Ex - good point about public campaigns as I don't recall many of these and I'm pretty receptive. Government does do national campaigns eg self assessment and billboards and YouTube do have an impact. Not aware of any campaigns on men leaving the seat down....As climate change and falling biodiversity fack the planet up what a shame it becomes a political hot potato what a shame we don't have an 80s Aids type campaign - don't let your children and their children die of our ignorance. Back to the subject - I did the cyclists in a HGV cab a couple of times which is quite sobering. Safe Urban Driving is where truckers and cabbies spen a day on push bikes, great if that was rolled out to all road users
