New JAGS Pre-Prep on East Dulwich Grove
malumbu replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If they are true about cutting carbon they need to cut journeys to school including their own staff.... -
Matthew Perry, not so much just for him but the sad loss of life for anyone like him if we are to believe the rock and roll lifestyle he lived.

New JAGS Pre-Prep on East Dulwich Grove
malumbu replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Nothing to do with the planning permission but what is a pre-prep? Assume it is a nursery but seems an odd term to me! As regards to minimising carbon I'd be interested on reducing the number of parents who drive their children to school. I love the mega kiddy buggies that some child minders use! -
Good heavens Rocks, don't you have anything constructive to post? (factual comment not a snipe). Brenchley Gardens starts in East Dulwich I believe, it is part of the SE23 post code that it in Southwark. Forest Hill Road is in SE22, so again in East Dulwich.

Why not? The point is that the redesign endangers cyclists. If other road users are happy to share the road then fine. But we all know those who couldn't give a fig. In built up areas, more road parking, that constricts traffic speeds. It doesn't work on Brenchley Gardens. If you feel otherwise then I'd love to know. If you don't agree with 20 mph zones then please give your reasons. Rather than a cheap snipe at me. I know huge amounts on road management, driver behaviour and whilst life is too short to go through all the processes and regulations it is always good to hear other opinions or else I will be living in a bubble

You wont be surprised that I am fully in favour. After a near miss with a van driving too close to me on Brenchley Gardens (a bit daft really as it was a national distribution company) I googled to find out more about the area and came across the following report from Southwark on five key areas including Forest Hill Road and Brenchley Gardens www.southwark.gov.uk/transport-and-roads/improving-our-streets/live-projects/borough-wide-20mph-speed-limit?chapter=5 As predominantly a cyclist I am not in favour of the changes on Brenchley Gardens - the slight narrowing means that you have to move to the primary position (ie centre of the road) as there isn't sufficient room for drivers to overtake if a vehicle is coming in the opposite direction. A separate cycle lane would have been much more appropriate. Now I love controlling the road being in this position on most of the London streets, full of parked cars, and the sooner that motorised transport realises that cyclists have just as much right as others the better. But on Brenchley Gardens it makes you vulnerable as so many drivers use it as a race track. Anyway this is not a car vs bike thread, but a 20mph thread, in particular road design. Separately I was struck by another social media site which had drivers complaining at the frustration of doing 20mph and all but condoning some doing daft/dangerous things. just adapt please and it becomes normal.

Wrote this on Friday, thought I'd posted it. But obs still relevant. Just watching the news and the extreme weather in Scotland. Ok so a reduction in driving in London isn't going to address climate change on its own. But London, Britain and world wake up, we've got to change are attitude to travel, energy, agriculture etc As for the ranty post above - that's not a snipe but a factual comment. Not all of us need a car. Many more could manage without a car or use it less. Not sure of your personal situation. You are welcome to your views but don't know how you equate what I say with the rich will get richer. Obviously misjudged my political beliefs. You've brightened up the debate - that's a compliment not a sarky or patronising comment.

No South African wine? A bonus. The supermarkets in France have it right. Fortunately we have Lidl to by old world wines

Move to the left good? Less fossil fuel burning and more environmental policies Not changing the constitution to embrace native Australian's rights good or bad? I'm not sure on the latter but I hope our Australian friend can share his/her views. Cat??? Is this your Brexit moment?

Good to have discussion on this. I wasn't at the Palestine march yesterday but it can be easy pickings for the right wing media - Extremists looking to recruit.... The debate on Sunday morning politics seems so much better under Victoria Derbyshire and three things to note this morning - Lisa Nancy not criticising Starmer for his LBC interview nor saying that the Israeli's could effectively be carrying out war crimes (to be fair she wasn't in a position to do this but looked a little like a rabbit in the headlights, an ex-Israeli PM effectively saying that the Palestinians in Gaza brought it on themselves, it was for the rest of the world to help them, that Israel will seal off the borders after they have destroyed Hamas and let the Palestinians sort out food, energy, water etc themselves, and this surreal bit where he said the BBC were effectively friends of Hamas which they are not and that extremists will come for the UK next, and a Palestinian ex PLO I imagine resisting a little in saying that Hamas carried out atrocities. On the latter whatever you think you have to agree that Hamas were evil in what they did, targeting combatants is one thing but.... Any of those marching yesterday have to agree this or our government and the press will exploit this, On end games I really don't know what Hamas's is, yes they want to inspire the next generation of 'freedom fighters' but bringing Iran into it really is World War 3 territory. But that is my take, love to hear more from others. This is the Lounge as it was a few years ago.

If it is a combi there is a 'filling loop' essentially attached to your mains water to repressurise your system. Off the top of my head it is about two bar, which in old money is about half the pressure in car tyres. You would either turn a tap or a slotted valve to repressurise, drop in pressure is fairly common, but turn it off at the end or else your boiler will be over pressured! Easy peasy lemon squeezy www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhTRIf5ueMo (It's Which? so trustworthy) That's £60 to me for your call out 😉

Bobby Charlton has hung his boots up for the last time www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63006386 Thought I'd seen him play but he was only on the fringes of the Man U team that season. Did catch him a few years later in a car park outside a football ground and have his autograph on the programme - he may have been considering a new management challenge following his short lived job at Preston

I suppose one big question is what is the end game. Something that was not known for Gulf War 2. Invasion of Afghanistan hardly delivered long term prosperity and stability for the country and as for the Arab Spring. But hey it's easy to knock. But what is the answer? Secular societies but we've gone the other way.

We have a massive tax burden under this government, why not pick on them? Don't have a lot of sympathy for motorists, even if I am one myself. Just watching the news and the extreme weather in Scotland. Ok so a reduction in driving in London isn't going to address climate change on its own. But London, Britain and world wake up, we've got to change are attitude to travel, energy, agriculture etc

Just wondering if this is an appropriate thread to post on at the moment. Obviously horrid events have been happening both in Gaza and Israel. As regards the mainstream media there has been some good reporting/discussion on Radio 4, more in depth than their news bulletins and the Beeb TV news. Perhaps Channel 4 and Newsnight are better sources. Would this be a good place to talk about how peace could be delivered or is this just far too sensitive?

No what? No I don't want to debate the issue on a chat forum?

Had Clarke's as a kid, better than other brands and kept people employed at their Somerset factory. Not sure why you are rejoicing over footwear made in a sweatshop in Asia. Ok Lounge discussion....

Moving onto the positives got an email from the Southwark person liaising with other stakeholders over renovation of the East Lodge at Nunhead Cemetery. Very positive but don't worry most of the money isn't coming from your council tax. Also credit for saving the Concrete House, top of lordship Lane, listed and the first in the country, that the owner was letting it fall down in anticipation of redevelopment.

I'm not fond of this American tradition but accept it having kids ourselves. Stick to your own street, go out in groups, look for the houses with signs eg lit up pumpkin, don't encourage teenagers as it can get a bit nasty and have say one adult per six kids. Oh and have a trick that doesn't involve egging those houses that don't wish to participate

It even happened in Lidl. I popped in to buy my usual small basket full and came back with a device to remove fat from the dishwasher, some dog food, and an ironing board. I haven't got a dishwasher, a cat or an iron so some bargains going on the for sale section. I gave up in Sainsbury's FH. Same thing happens when I am in B&Q on the Old Kent Road when I think I am in Catford. I expect it is common and does help sales. I always loved Sainsbury's ED where you arrived to fresh fruit and veg where as Sainsbury's/Savacenter it was white bread, processed food, and boxes of beer.

National Travel Survey and cycling policy in London
malumbu replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
Actually Snowy, whilst I like most of what you have said I have to disagree. I want a world where we share the road and are courteous to each other. Segregating cyclists mean that motorists can continue to believe that they own the road, whereas the Highway Code does not distinguish between different road users. I've lobbied influential contacts on this but I also understand why pragmatism (cars being 20 - 30 times heavier than the average human) trumps my views. Love to have a beer and a discussion about this. Just thought I'd Google, I'm not that bothered about the thread as a whole as I know it is another anti LTN Trojan Horse and I want cycling to continue to be supported as it is the right thing to do. From the Guardian: Mitchell [Sarah Mitchell, chief executive of UK cycling charity Cycling UK] said: “The pandemic proved more people would cycle – particularly women and children – if it felt safe for them to do so. It’s sadly no surprise that last year those cycling levels dropped, as some short-sighted councils began pulling out the protected lanes which kept people safe and traffic levels rose again. “Both national and local governments need to learn last year’s lessons and focus on the new crisis: cost of living. More people are turning to cycling for shorter journeys to help make ends meet, but they need the safety that dedicated cycle lanes bring. ” A DfT spokesperson said: “Government is investing a record £2bn over this parliament to enable more walking, wheeling and cycling through better infrastructure, cycle training and active travel prescriptions. “Though cycling levels have returned from the exceptional levels we saw during the pandemic, we remain fully confident our investment will enable many more people to choose walking and cycling for everyday journeys by 2030.” I'll back DfT on this, irrespective of the rrrssss running the show at the moment. Oh, and Rocks, suggest you join LCC who have major campaigns against dangerous junctions, -
