Bollox, 20mph if adhered to leads to smoother driving and reduced congestion. Half the problem is caused by the typical (and I mean typical) driver who races to the speed bumps, bangs on the anchors (leading to brake particulate emission), accelerates again (more nitrogen oxides) as well as 10 - 20 percent more fuel and CO2. Probably the biggest indicator that many drivers don't give a toss, whatever they may say. I've done the training, got the badge, worked with vehicle engineers etc etc. Not of course mentioning the massive reduction in deaths and seriously injured. Quicker the two major political parties push for average speed cameras the better.

Odd response - definition of profiteering "the practice of making or seeking to make an excessive or unfair profit, especially illegally or in a black market". Not sure if any of those apply. What did you think of my previous post?

Not really sure why you why you are resorting to insults, not very grown up. Well not surprisingly I disagree, we are screwing up the planet and all need to take action. I expect you and others are doing the right thing but the rest of us need to do so too. I don't know where this nonsense of me banning cars comes from. It's less driving and smarter driving, using more environmentally appropriate vehicles, reducing single occupancy (ie better utility) and smoother driving (an easy win, that so many have no idea). I've posted elsewhere this really interesting study at Heathrow by government's Behaviour Change Team. Sadly whatever you did do make it attractive to reduce driving to work it ust didn't work. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/586376/sustainable-travel-evaluation-of-low-cost-workplace-interventions.pdf Some extracts "Increasing sustainable travel can help create growth in the economy and tackle climate change by cutting carbon emissions. It also influences our health, by improving air quality and physical activity, and can drive productivity by reducing congestion and providing easier access to jobs." Surely you have no objection to this "A key learning from this project is not to take self-reported opinions at face value when devising transport interventions. The gap that sometimes exist between stated preferences and observed behaviour is a well-documented phenomenon, which was reaffirmed by this project." This is so familiar on the various LTN threads "Oh I really believe in sustainable transport" "but they really have to have perfect alternatives before I will ditch the car" (And even then I wont) Not sure why you would object to spending a little more on driving, if it was to reduce the overall mileage, ie encourage others to ditch non-essential car journeys or ones where there is a straight forward alternative. I'm ready for the barrage that the research above is poorly evidences, or biased. I see very useful piece of work that justifies a more stick based approach because many human beings can't be trusted to do the right thing.

Oh I thought you were talking about the nutty boys, those pop skasters also known as Madness. You want madness - then look at this, often shown by our national broadcaster. I believe that one of the perpertrators also got an award for it. What woke nonsense. I blame it on Southwark, the Labour party, the Mayor, TfL, the rich people in leafy Dulwich and biased scientists.

Southwark, the Mayor, TfL are clearly corrupt and the data is not accurate/complete/unbiased. This is another LTN thread I assume?

Any info on how to challenge controlled parking proposal in Nunhead?
malumbu replied to Kip59's topic in Roads & Transport
How to win friends and influence people, eh? Obviously those who voted Johnson in were all intelligent and public spirited. What a daft post labelling many in the area as morons. As I have siad before if you feel you can make a difference stand for the council yourself. -

I don't agree. For many driving is like an addiction. You need stick as well as carrot. Surely you must know people that however good the alternative they will still use their car. There is some wonderful research by the Behavioural Insights Team (aka Government Nudge Unit) at Heathrow a few years ago. Whatever you did do make it attractive to reduce driving to work just didn't work. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/586376/sustainable-travel-evaluation-of-low-cost-workplace-interventions.pdf Some extracts Increasing sustainable travel can help create growth in the economy and tackle climate change by cutting carbon emissions. It also influences our health, by improving air quality and physical activity, and can drive productivity by reducing congestion and providing easier access to jobs. As the UK’s largest single site employer, with about 76,000 staff who work for 350 employers, Heathrow Airport provided a large scale setting to test the impact of behavioural insights on increasing sustainable travel, with almost half of employees travelling in Single Occupancy Vehicles at the outset of the study. A range of light touch interventions were trialled, and many of them did not yield a significant effect. And my favourite: A key learning from this project is not to take self-reported opinions at face value when devising transport interventions. The gap that sometimes exist between stated preferences and observed behaviour is a well-documented phenomenon, which was reaffirmed by this project. Back to my views - this remind me so much of much of the debate here - "Oh I really believe in sustainable transport" "but they really have to have perfect alternatives before ?I will ditch the car" (And even then I wont) -
Going back to your irrelevant post FM, government rules are mobility scooters are not allowed in cycle lanes. www.gov.uk/mobility-scooters-and-powered-wheelchairs-rules/driving-on-the-road So one person purporting to be the 'cycle lobby' agreed with current government rules that mobility scooters should not be in cycle lanes. Unless of course One Dulwich are campaigning for mobility scooters to use cycle lanes. Perhaps they are.

What's this got to do with One Dulwich meeting Southwark. Unless One Dulwich are opposing all measures that are encouraging less car use. Perhaps they are. Let's talk SUVs then. Fiat produced the perfect city car, the 500. Even Top Gear/ future PM Clarkson agreed. But the motor industry don't want urban dwellers to by sensible cars. No you need a sexy SUV. Even Fiat felt that they had to stretch the 500. What's this got to do with One Dulwich? Perhaps they are covertly supporting the unnecessary move to over powered, over sized, over weight vehicles

Ok so I'd like to see the source of these two militant cyclists and how two people are dictating the agenda. on a thread in a far away galaxy I've been reported as having a super power of being able to ban cars.
-
Wow, I have a superpower to ban vehicles. I was totally unaware. How exciting
-
Pugwash - by all means keep driving. Not sure what your issue is. Your personal mobility is important to you. It may cost you a bit more and hope you can afford it. Anacdotal stuff FM, doesn't help the debate.

I was at a DLR station last night and I couldn't get national rail tickets from it. A true but slightly facetious response. I'd jus like everything to be joined up. I'm travelling LNER and they simply email me a PDF. GWR I need their Bally ap. Oyster is brill (thanks Ken) but at times I'd like to split a fare between my Oyster and debit card without getting off the train. All sortable I expect and how bally brilliant having my discount card on an ap.

Hi modernmajorgeneral. I'd be interested to learn what your group are proposing to reduce emissions from cars. If you are opposing something you need alternatives rather than maintaining the status quo. Are those not supporting your campaign welcome at my community pub?

Don't you think it is down to selfish drivers to give up their cars rather and use public transport more? I've got first hand experience in this is what I have done. And I expect that my family and I are typical of most around here. Car gets used to the odd big shopping trip, Wickes, and holidays/occasional trips out that can't be easily managed by public transport. You all know what my main form of transport is. Financially a car club makes good sense, I haven't quite taken the plunge but it can't be far off. DKH - the biggest disaster in recent years was the 2000 fuel protest that put back government push to get us out of our cars and cut emissions. No government since has dared to upset motorists, what a shame. The early Blair government was pushing things in the right direction and together with him destabalising the world, encouraging global terrorism, resulting in increase in refugees etc this was (changing policy on car use) his other crime. Although tougher measures on reducing emissions would have been introduced if Brown had got in again. (Happy for any journo to contact me as I know where the bodies were buried!)

Most inner boroughs are 20 mpjh, as I expect are many urban areas across the UK. France has gone one better with 30 kmh, slightly less, in many of their towns. IT would be good if the government mandate 29 mph, have publicity for this, recommend average speed cameras and ideally have some sort of retest/refresh programme and there will be drivers on the road who passed their test 70 years ago and will keep on driving until they can no longer get a doctor's certificate.
-
In deed, good post, move on, nothing to see here
-
Most of us don't use ticket offices. There obviously needs to be arrangements for those that do and I expect organisations supporting the elderly and vulnerable will campaign for this.
-
Most cyclists cycle on the road. Beyond a quick short cut, getting round traffic blocking the road and the like I don't know why cyclists use pavements and nor do you. We can speculate all we want. This thread won't sort out the issue. It's not even a proper soap box. Those who don't follow the highway code whatever sort of road user don't post here. Well apart from Alice. And someone when younger who felt entitled (mainly ignoring speed limits) ie me!

Who is this Boris? Why do you all love ex Mayor ex PM fibbing barstool so much? Johnson spoke about possible extensions so who's to know whether he would extend it if he'd stayed longer. Politics, health and the environment didn't bother him, as long as it made him look good and gave him power. I was there when he spoke about the value of close cooperation with Paris and Berlin. Well he sacrificed that for his own career and sod the country. Now what is this thread all about......
-
The ULEZ was a Tory Mayor's concept. Non Labour councils also have CPZs, parking restrictions and the like. Try and see past your bias.
-
I'm curious to why you raise the topic of the ULEZ expansion on this thread Rocks, unless you want to use it to do some more TfL and/or Labour bashing. I don't think the ULEZ expansion has anything to do with Southwark. Labour aren't going to stick their neck out, and just continue to allow the Tories to f things up. Just to remind all, the concept of the ULEZ was introduced by Mayor Johnson as a bit of blue on blue, as his mate Dave wouldn't throw any more money to support Johnson's air quality aspirations. Johnson talked about expanding this to the North and South Circs, and a possible zero emission zone in the central congestion charging area. He now probably denies any of this. Government were ordered by the courts to sort out air quality www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-43141467 but continue to put this in the hands of local authorities. Government introduced the concept of charging and non-charging Clean Air Zones which confused people and have since clarified that Clean Air Zones are purely those measures that charge older polluting vehicles for access. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-in-a-clean-air-zone The manufacturers have known that emission standards for diesel vehicles were not delivering, but were not compelled to do any thing more and just wait for the slow machinery in Brussels to get up to speed. They scored a massive home goal by one of the most technically innovative companies, VW, tampering with vehicles that were going through official tests which had the knock on effect of Brussels getting their act together and introducing real world testing www.fleeteurope.com/fr/new-energies-taxation-and-legislation/europe/features/do-you-know-your-euro-6-your-6c-and-6d-temp?a=DQU04&t[0]=Energy&t[1]=Funding&curl=1. But this really is the stuff for the Lounge.

I've got a recommendation for anyone that has rubbish that needs to be disposed of. Cheaper than hiring a skip

How very dare you. I have visited Southwark on many occasions. Often with my good friend Debbie. It is where the drama series Dallas was filmed. Debbie regularly does Dallas. That must be my most puerile of posts. Can't be assed to defend my right to free speech
