You've raised some excellent wider issues mrwb, worthy of a number of separate threads on the Lounge, happy to have a good debate on these there.

You will be pleased to know that there is detailed government guidance on road signage, I've only flicked through but Nicola and radiant I suggest that you have a read. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/771873/traffic-signs-manual-chapter-1.pdf I am happy in looking at higher level road signs and I am an excellent, courteous and safe driver and cyclist. I've had a few penalties in the past, in recent years more often than not for misinterpreting signage, which is my own fault. In the past it would be through willfully ignoring it and/or taking a risk. I've learned 😀 If the signage does not meet national guidance then of course write to your Councillor and if still unhappy a formal complaint. If signage does meet national guidance then you will need to raise your issues with the government, I always do this through my MP.

Is that music the Gala festival already?

Fishboy, Cyclemonkey, thanks for your objective and well laid out thoughts, presenting different perspectives. This is what a forum should be like. Anti-social behaviour is a national (probably global issue) as is as much for society to address, in addition to those putting on events and those agencies enforcing law and order. I expect most of us have done something wrong in our lives, I've certainly had a few silly incidents in the past I am not proud of. I'm pleased that I didn't go to the pub in the park, it didn't appeal to me and I am a tight ass in any case so my events are free or low price. I was working at the Lambeth County Show last year in sweltering heat, topped by seeing the old UK soul band Heatwave at the end. Too hot for me today. -
Oh joy, Donald Johnson and Boris Trump in one day. I'm sure the fun will not last.

Where to watch Champions League final?
malumbu replied to vladi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Funnily enough read your post DKH whilst at the Castle tonight but banned myself from posting on my phone. Blythe will clearly be the best place to watch it, only 15 mins away on the 185. As others have posted BT are using their Youtube channel, as they have in the past, as it is good for raising advertising revenue. Good news that it is free to view, even for the wrong reasons. -
I was excited to see the thread Ladlands, I wrongly assumed that it was about a new Netflix series. But instead I found out a bit more about the Dawson's Heights Estate. George Clarke presented an excellent documentary on local authority housing, that featured Dawson heights being a landmark (both visually and in terms of planning. https://www.channel4.com/programmes/george-clarkes-council-house-scandal/on-demand/69217-001 Sadly the attached article from the earlier email from the Dulwich Society does not present a short summary, and is just to long winded. It also talks about the battleship design, when it is clearly two cruise liners as I can see out of my window.

Abe, First Mate, I feel your pain. Clearly you are extremely angry about many who cycle. I understand that CBT is a very good therapy for helping with obsessions. Here's a helpful link to the NHS. Good luck! https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/talking-therapies-medicine-treatments/talking-therapies-and-counselling/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt/overview/ I've offered similar advice this evening to someone really angry about state supported events. Others extremely angry over everything that LB Southwark does may similarly benefit. CBT is not to be confused with CBD (cannabis oil) but perhaps that may also be useful too.

Ah such a shame that you feel this way. Whatever its faults most of us will have fond memories of the Game. Thinking back we were worried that there would be low attendance at the Paralympic events - how wrong could we have been. I'm sure we could all pick holes in the Games, but I reckon most will have only fond memories. My personal experience was being away with two people who moaned about it, but when they saw some of the wonderful opening ceremony were transformed. I've had a quick look on line about your issues - it may well be misanthropy which I understand can be treated using CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). I'm sure that your GP will be able to help. Others on this site may also have good suggestions. Here's some more information from the NHS - good luck! https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/talking-therapies-medicine-treatments/talking-therapies-and-counselling/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt/overview/ -
Trees being felled for drainage work in Peckham rye
malumbu replied to Oneredfish's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think it is a good thing that non-native, and/or often evasive species are being felled. So good bye sycamores and horse chestnuts. I am sure that they will be replaced by nice ash, beech, oak, birch etc -
I know plenty of people in the medical profession that cycle, for health, the environment, and getting from A to B. Social prescribing is when those in the medical profession encourage some with mental health problems to get involved in their community and take up activities such as cycling, rather than prescribing drugs. Have you tried cycling Abe? I bet you'd love it. It can transform your life. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/walking-wheeling-and-cycling-to-be-offered-on-prescription-in-nationwide-trial

Generally local authorities will use the same databases, shared by or purchased from DVLA, possibly with additional fields. The DVLA one, containing tens of millions of vehicles isn't fool proof, ie there will be the odd error. ULEZ is based on emissions, and there are some older petrol cars that in theory will be caught as they are not modern enough, but were designed to meet future standards. What is special/different about your vehicle gm99 - out of interest. Is it Euro 3 petrol (ULEZ non-compliant) mascarading at a Euro 4 (compliant).

I was involved in planning for the London 2012 Games. Oh the years of people moaning about it, but two wonderful events - in some respects the paraolympics were even better. Most of those who moaned, and that included some friends and family, really enjoyed the four weeks or so. The disruption, in particular to London, was quickly forgotten Talking about emergencies - the new hazard that we did not need to consider 10 years ago were crowd movements. In those long off days you didn't get people stopping to check their Whatsapps or other messages, without warning, which can then lead to a crush. Yes texts did exist but not half the problems you get now with large groups of people and suddenly someone stopping. -
I'm off to the Castle later where I may or may not be listening to folk music, some may think it is noise pollution.

The Jerk Cookout was a wonderful event, a really happy atmosphere and a kick up the ass for the white liberal professionals in the area (not all as a fair number went). I had no issues with the brief chaos, the moaning from some of the above group was borderline casual racist - I love other cultures "but not round here" and numerous stereotypical comments. Even the smell of barbecued animal was fine with this vegetarian. Signposting and encouraging people not to drive could have been done better. As there was damage to the lawn, as much to do with probably the biggest free event that Horniman had ever held, they changed to ticketed events in future to help limit the numbers. Not sure what Horniman Heights posted on Twitter that day, some find him/her funny, others that she/he is a bit of a nob, although I expect with his/her sense of humour it would have been along my thoughts above. Actually he/she is posting some reasonable stuff at the moment including a easy going view on Gala. https://twitter.com/HornimanHeights -

I think it is also great that Horniman museum and Gardens is also doing ticketed events, closing the park, and generating new revenue, We all welcome this and nobody in the vicinity complains. https://www.horniman.ac.uk/event/horniman-family-rave-with-big-fish-little-fish/ A particularly good event ten years or so was the Jerk cookout about ten years ago, again locals were happy with the massive disruption, congestion and the damage to the gardens from 100s of animal carcasses. -
The jay in our garden has worked out how to use the feeder. Apparently that is not common.
-
We've got a family of woodpeckers visiting the bird feeders which is lovely. And a jay hangs around, not sure what it is feeding on. And for the first time a couple of starlings. How much this is related to habitat destruction, climate change and the like I don't know. Woodpeckers natural food is not bird feeders. And the nearest starling I have seen have been in car parks a good mile away (their numbers have been absolutely decimated). Pond flora has gone crazy and the wildlife meadow doing well - yellow rattle is the first thing to plant which then self seeds and reduces grass growth

I'm sure that Gumtree is excellent, and my views are not affected by it being used to fence stolen bikes, including one of mine, as they don't seem to check/trace those advertising on it. (I only post useful and positive things now but you get the gist) Ebay may be the place to go for something classic/unusual, and a potential bargain. Obviously a risk. Autotrader series is or was the place to go for cars. Loot may still exist and in the past I bought of the small ads in local papers.

We live close enough to the Rye to hear the festival. As said I think it is great that these events are held, and I expect that those living near to Brockwell Park and Victoria Park have similar discussions to this thread. In the old days Bromley used to put on Sunday afternoon concerts of popular classical music, much better than Hampstead as more inclusive. We are closer to Horniman Gardens and when there are free events the sound of music draws us in. We can also hear a local school and the sound of kids playing is nice (in a non-weird way I hasten to add) I'm only trying to post positive views on this forum as I had a "FFS stop moaning" moment on another subject a few weeks ago. If I had my old head on I'd say the noise coming from what appears to be constant building work, petrol powered garden tools in postage stamp gardens, one neighbour's choice of bland radio stations (Heart or Kiss or Capital or Smooth or whatever), and the equal mix of 80s classics and 80s please bury and never play again from another neighbour are more annoying. But now I welcome people constantly improving their houses, people allowing their gardens to become overgrown to attract wildlife and then blitzing with a petrol strimmer, and diverse musical tastes. Or maybe not...... -
Average speed cameras are a great way to reduce speed, improve road safety and also encourages smoother driving which cuts emissions. I'd love these on Brenchley Gardens, and out of borough Perry Vale. I need Southwark and Lewisham road officers to think the same. I'd also love the main political parties to understand this and explain the benefits to drivers to get them on board, so a win win win win win, and not a vote loser.

I once lived in a shared house with a chap who played and sang Dylan's Blowing in the Wind regularly. Very flat - it was like a drone. As I only make upbeat posts nowadays clearly it was amazing.

The last Mayor promised us air as clean as an alpine meadow, it was a jolly good article and I'd love to hear your views. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/0/forget-saharan-dust-londons-air-can-pure-alps/ And boy could he write. It's a shame that Mr Khan is not a product of the private school/elite upbringing.

We've been relatively blessed in recent times as I understand that some of our more extreme weather wasn't so good for their life cycle. But drop your guard, turn your back, look under a piece of furniture and hey ho, lots of lovely holes I expect that many of you have good recommendations and I'd love to hear them. We've done the bombs, sprays, cedar balls in wardrobes and the like. Is this particular to our bit of the country? Never had them in the four other places I've lived in the UK https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/about-us/search-news/operation-clothes-moth-results-english-heritage

Your last line was almost poetic Rocks, took me back to seeing the great John Cooper Clark in the early days. I challenge you to putting your views to verse!
