  1. Most cars round here are used infrequently - convenience rather than utility. Car club less convenient but much greater utility. Therefore less cars and frees up road space where cars were once parked. What's not to like.
  2. Ah so you are guilty too. Off to the Tower for you!
  3. Glycophosphate is commonly used in the UK including gardeners. If you've ever bought round up that is it. The EU wanted to ban it due to over use by farmers, but we don't subscribe to that woke nonsense as they have done in France. Perhaps someone would like to write to Defra through their local MP asking about greater controls over this commonly available weed killer
  4. Going back to earlier posts as I've said before prices are reasonable and affordable by everyone I know in the area (and I ain't posh nor do Iive in a leafy street). Unless space for parking isn't critical you won't get mass support. But the bigger picture is less cars which surely we all agree with.
  5. Cut the stereotypes please. As for parents/carers not encouraging their kids to ride on the road when they are old/responsible/competent enough, or when they are younger responsible adults riding on the road with, that's my starting point . I'd ask government through my MP about this and report back. Rather than setting off the knee jerk responses you will get here
  6. Total over-reaction. Silly thing to do but it doesn't mean that her research is wrong. Wont do her reputation any good but academics have to go through a peer review process before publishing. As we all know. Here's some work she is doing on Covid: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/support-the-ongoing-research-into-covid-19/ Perhaps the Mail and Torygraph have some footage of her wiping her bottom on some anti vaxing protest posters She did work on earlier on HIV, immune response and the like. I understand she lit a bonfire of DVDs produced by fundamental Christian groups protesting that HIV is a gay plague and against the will of God. Someone else is clearly bias is Sue Gray. She's a wokey lefty ex civil servant. Typical of most civil servants. She probably is not the biggest supporter of ex PM Johnson. I expect she enjoyed the Spitting Image sketch with had miners singing "Maggie Maggie Maggie, OUT OUT OUT". Her report on ex PM Johnson was therefore totally flawed as many people who do support ex PM Johnson have said. Or maybe she was an impartial civil servant doing her job. Like an impartial researcher doing their job.
  7. Sorry I am lost, I thought this thread was about a meeting between a single issue group (One Dulwich) and the local authority. We've now had three people post the same story about an academic. I'll discuss that on the wider LTN thread, ie on the Lounge, where it is rightly put, where all of you can click on (surely everyone is computer literate on this site). So back to the point of the thread. From my understanding, One Dulwich will support timed closing of roads to help reduce pollution, carbon emissions, road safety, make them active travel friendly, get kids out of cars, reduce car use, reduce the number of cars and make Brexit work. It sort of says that on their Website. With such widespread and community friendly, environmental friendly and health friendly policies what's not like? From my understanding from the Southwark Website LTNs refer to closing roads to road traffic. Timed closures are not strictly LTNs The One Dulwich in principle supports the timed road closures around the Dulwich area. Sorted. (getting community buy in will merely kick the can down the road for another generation, there will always be a group of drivers who will be disadvantaged/portest). Right back to Anna Karenina or whatever she is called. See you in the Lounge.
  8. Thanks and good luck on your event. I may shuffle round looking a little out of place 🙂
  9. What are they like to cycle Bic?
  10. Christ it's getting desperate now. Tory press looking for every bit of dirt. We will be hearing stories that Starmer was a naughty boy as a student working in France next. But Rocks, surely even you would agree that this is for broader discussion on the LTN thread. So hands up who has never done anything impulsive in their life. My crime was to remove an anti vaxing poster from the community notice board outside Sainsbury's at the Plough. Shutting down free speech eh? Edited to add, in fact someone did post it on the Lounge so perhaps one of you would like to delete. I'm not the internet police just pointing it out.....
  11. 9 out of 10 cars driving on the road in the outer boroughs comply with ULEZ emission standards. What's your problem? It's hardly a major scandal that Mayor Khan confused cars driving with those owned. Must have been a quiet news day.
  12. Alice I don't fit this category. So why aren't I offended by LTNs? I'd love to know your theory. Others have inferred that I am a lycra clad eco warrior. I'll take that as a compliment. I expect most in the area have already become accustomed to road changes. As they have done with earlier changes.
  13. Connectivity was fine, certainly on EE/T-mobile when I was there 4 years ago, I tool loads of photos of stuff going on but not bands whilst they were playing. You used to get cider in lay-by's near the festival for the equivalent of two or three pounds a pint. Very hard core to pass a gallon/five litre containers amongst a group. Picking up on pricing and the Wimbledon comparison, happy to pay £80 plus for a day at Wimbledon but would balk at paying that for a gig, Premier match or three times and more for a Glastonbury ticket. But that is for another thread.
  14. When I was there four years ago there seemed to be much less smart phones on display - I assume then due to limited opportunity to recharge. You could pay to get this done, once your power pack had gone. Maybe batteries are better, maybe there was more or cheaper recharging. Oh my word, there is something we definitely agree on Rocks. And you will also be pleased I spent most of my time in 2019 when not doing boring work breaking rocks in the hot sun in the smaller venues, and on the Sunday just in the Green field and Strummerville where all the youngsters paid homage to me as the people's poet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtl8gCDrpcY
  15. It's a fair question which sadly those angry about the LTNs consistently dodge. And then go for the playground tactic "you drive a car nah nah nah nah". I've posed it on the Lounge too. Please do pin your colours to the match otherwise it will appear that you are simply masquerading as caring for the environment. Happy for you do to this on either thread. Or start up a new one.... You are also cordially invited to contribute to the crowd funding to judicially review government about reducing their commitment on investing on active travel. You will find that hidden away in the Lounge. My own amusing comment - the general discussion on LTNs feels like Groundhog Day.
  16. What is Glasto? An annoying term no doubt introduced by the Beeb. Once I have stopped being grumpy I'll post. Just reaching for a chill pill, lit my candles, got my incense and my Enya cassette (shame don't have a tape recorder).
  17. Are One Dulwich campaigning for an increase in fuel duty, to fund, say hospitals, schools, decent pay rises for public servants such as nurses, as well as some substance to zero carbon? No??? What about those of you who are against LTN's, what do you reckon? I'll post this on the lounge too.
  18. Please will you do your research. Vaping is the tobacco industry's cynical way of picking up lost revenue from the massive reduction in cigarette sales over recent decades. A combination of price, banning cigarettes in indoor areas, death and diseases on non-sexy packaging, banning of advertising including some high profile sports, and general encouragement cut down the level of smoking (official figures) "The proportion of adults who smoke has fallen, from 27% in 1993 to 16% in 2019. And smoking habits among those who smoke are changing, too, with the average (median) number of cigarettes smoked per day falling from 15 to 10. There has also been a clear decline in the proportion of children who have ever smoked, with a decrease of 15 percentage points since 1997." So you need some pretty kick ass interventions to encourage behaviour change be it the evil weed (tobacco) or the entitlement to drive where you like, when you like, how you like and what you like. As I have said ad infinitum on various forums for years on this site. The attached gives more details, including any uncertainties so I expect the professional statisticians who trawl through Southwark's data and academic reports will have a field day dissing this! http://healthsurvey.hscic.gov.uk/data-visualisation/data-visualisation/explore-the-trends/smoking.aspx Edited to add to Ex's points - there is also much greater risk aversion from parents than perhaps even twenty years ago and certainly of my child hood - hi dad and mum, I've got myself a 125 motorbike. Mum, "great, can I have a go on the back". As for 'ableist', get yourself down to the velodrome to see the adapted bikes. https://wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk/cycling-sessions/ Forgot to mention increasing road duty, to say the 2004 levels when it was frozen (and now reduced, supposedly temporarily). What do you all reckon?
  19. The pavement is crap. Surface is poor. Not loads of space to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. No priority at junctions. I only cycle on it when the South Circ is chocca, even with two road works (close to Pines and Needles and further West) I've generally stuck to the road in recent days. A reasonable cyclist can keep pace with the traffic, and overtake by stationary traffic at the lights, to be first to go on green. The shared use pavement is only there as the A205 is pretty narrow at this section. It's probably a route where I've had no aggro with drivers over many years of using it. Not that it is a fun road. The Highway Code does not compel cyclists to use cycling infrastructure. Surprising how many motorists are unaware. There is a nice traffic calmed route to Clapham Junction when I have a more leisurely cycle. This predates any LTN. Had to scroll up to the title of this thread as hadn't a clue what the subject was. So many merge into attacks on Southwark, the Mayor and/or cyclists.
  20. I always enjoy a good laugh, and the new designation that this thread was hot (s*** hot) brought a massive smile to my face. I had a nice sit down at Dulwich Beach today and watched the few bikes tootle through. Some rumble strips (or whatever they call them) are sufficient to slow bikes down as necessary. There, a solution, that will hopefully make most of you happy. Bic, sorry to hear that cars are queuing for most of the day. That will be in deed frustrating if it takes you several hours to turn right. Reminds me of a Dr Who episode where Ardal Ohanlon plays a cat (for some reason the human race have evolved into cats) stuck in congestion for a lifetime https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1000253/characters/nm0641192 I'm hoping to get lots of likes and laughs on this comment. I've posted more likes in a day than I have posted in total on anything on line for the whole of my life. Edited to add I told both the vans today spewing smog on Dulwich Common to get their diesel filters sorted. We need schemes to reduce vehicle use to help improve our air, in particular getting older diesels off the road. Oh wait a second, I recall the ex-Mayor proposed an ultra low emission zone. He even talked about a zero emission zone in the congestion charging area. I hope we would encourage Mayor Khan to continue the good work of Mayor Johnson.
  21. You've broken the one exclamation mark limit !!!!!!! I'll look forward to seeing what this authentic Indian food is. Hopefully not chicken tikka masala (Scottish) or balti (Birmingham). Nearest I have seen is the India Club in the Strand, which in days gone by was close to the Indian High Commission.
  22. Pre-Covid there'd be discussions on what to tune into for those watching on the box. A bit late this year but what did people reckon? I was rather underwhelmed but I am probably biased as I find the Beeb have just become so sycophantic. In earlier coverage they seemed to go round the site more finding unusual stuff, it now seems to focus on the big acts doing their Las Vegas sets. Well one of them anyway. Just to show that I am not always bitter and twisted thought Yusuf was excellent - just a lovely man with lovely songs. And unlike four years ago when I was there as a voluteer when Kylie did the same legends slot, you could actually get into the pyramid arena, and even sit down further back. Elton John looked even more crowded than Kylie - only there for 15 mins for Kylie, couldn't see a thing because all of those bloody flags, but great audience watching. And Rick Astley singing the Smiths - wow!
  23. Here's guidance from TfL on managing streetworks, worth a read. https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/urban-planning-and-construction/our-land-and-infrastructure/roadworks-and-street-faults Regulations introduced recently by government to improve the handling and quality of repairs by utility companies www.gov.uk/government/news/new-street-works-regime-to-clamp-down-on-pothole-pain And the road rental scheme (restrictions on those carrying out repairs) introduced by TfL following support from government https://content.tfl.gov.uk/lane-rental-scheme-document-20210501-final.pdf I thought I'd find something in the government's manifesto but the only thing in 2019 was "Get Brexit Done"
  24. I've found it is really useful to go to TfL and find out what the problem is first. After you have done this then please do share with the rest of us. Cheers
