  1. If you charge for parking when you are away from home you may decide that it is preferable to use another mode of transport. If you are charged for parking outside or close to your home you may decide you won't keep a car. If your visitors are charged for parking near your house then they may decide to use another mode of transport. Perhaps the councillor engaged with kids as they understand this elementary logic. I'm not sure why some on this thread do not.
  2. Heavens it used to be ten times worse, over the last two decades or so 95 percent, probably more, bag their dog poo. It is one area where legislation, good citizenship, appropriate facilities provided by the council, and nudging people into good behaviour has worked. I'm sure most including dog owners will agree.
  3. FM, then write to the major political parties as they have been visiting schools and kissing babies for generations. Rocks, feel free to vote for another political party or if you want to influence Labour join the party, be active in your constituency and maybe stand as a councillor yourself. Pester power ie kids understanding what is right and then pestering their parents is a useful thing. Eg not letting engines idle outside schools, walk to school days and the like.
  4. Yep it's famous around these parts, used to be a place making guitars I recall. Incidentally Sydenham just up the road used to be well known for antic shops, particularly on Kirkdale. Just the Old Bath House left now, and the odd thing at five and dime.
  5. Thanks Admin, attached an earlier post on e bikes that links to other threads on the issue - licensing always crops up when speed limits for bikes are discussed. You'll all be pleased that I have said my piece 😄🙄 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Licensing of bikes comes up from time to time usually when the current government want to send red meat to their more hard line supporters or distract from small nuisances like fibbing ex Prime Ministers. Government officials remind the Transport Secretary that is has been looked at time and time again, is daft and undeliverable. We've chatted many times about this on the Forum, so to save time I've attached the previous thread www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/313035-cyclists-could-be-made-to-have-registration-plates-and-insurance-–-report/#comment-1590414 There are numerous articles on why it is daft, many in cycling journals, but also from serious journalists like Peter Walker, who lives locally. Rather than go to recent articles this one from 2010 shows it was daft 13 years ago https://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2010/dec/13/regulating-cyclists I did find a spoof article in Viz or Private Eye that you will enjoy. Just don't take it seriously folks https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11117805/Shake-road-laws-bike-riders-forced-registration-numbers-insurance.html
  6. It's good to involve the passengers, cyclists and drivers of the future, hopefully they will have a very different view than current generations, heavens they will inherit a different world.
  7. It will have to go a long way to beat the stall in Tatchbrook Street, Pimlico, both in terms of value and quality. Another recommendation is the wonderful Persian restaurant, Kish Mish, in Crystal Palace. We ate their last week, food was cooked to order, and it is unlicensed too. Fully recommend both.
  8. It reduces the number of journeys. Not rocket science.
  9. For the sake of balance, and the need to reduce emissions, is there a link to a site that supports restrictions on vehicles? Have you got any alternative proposals Charles? What about OpposeCPZ, do they have any good ideas or are they single issue who couldn't give a fig about health and the environment which is my experience of those that most vocally oppose anything that restricts their motoring.
  10. Thanks for sharing the positive article on X.
  11. Rocks and the rest could you revert to one of your other anti cycling threads. I had hoped we could discuss Southwark's arrangements for streets in this area including Brenchley, just out of ED and Barry Road. The former hasn't improved it, and made it more hazardous for cyclists, irrespective of whatever speed they are travelling. What do you reckon, do you care? Links to Southwark were put in earlier in this thread by me. Let's have a substantive debate rather than the same old tosh.
  12. Hi Earl, as I posted before before government agree a programme their analysts need to show that there is a good return on investment. Supporting active travel does exactly that in terms of the environment, health, reducing congestion etc. I've posted this before so shame that I need to repeat myself. ATB
  13. I don't. Its daft and sadly like cycle licensing is raised by the rabid right every so often. I've posted too many times about this silliness. If you want a two wheel cause Rocks here are two that I am very happy for you to pursue concerning two wheels - illegal bikes and lack of delivery rider training. Be my guest.
  14. Whilst this thread is essentially another one with issues about cyclists and cycling policy Earl raises one of my big issues, poor driving standards. Virtually all drivers need further training but few get it, most being due to caught misbehaving and having to go on a speed awareness course. Cyclist and pedestrian road skills can of course also be improved but neither kill due to poor road skills anywhere near as poor drivers.
  15. Have you proof of exorbitant salaries and how these compare, to say, merchant bankers? Consultants are widely used in the private and public sector, in the public sector there are financial controls on budget. Do you know what you have said is fact? What is your source? would you not agree the Oyster card, and integrated transport network in London has been a great success? That other cities are looking to replicate?? What about the new electric 185s, surely you must agree they are wonderful. dunno about the frequency. I check when the next one is and go for that. Sometimes Google/TfL get the expected arrival time wrong, which is frustrating, but no doubt this will improve. ULEZ has improved air quality as dirtier vehicles are taken off the road. We can debate whether it was justified to extend this but not for this thread
  16. Got a 363 to Crystal Palace and back last night. Bunching always cheeses me off but this is not my point here. Two 185s came while we were waiting and how exciting that they are lovely new electric buses. Well done Mayor Khan. Not like those dreadful new routemasters on the 176 that was one of the last mayor's indulgence projects, £50k too expensive, vibrate badly and rarely run in electric mode. Bendy buses are great in modern cities with straight wide roads. Not London.
  17. Democratic defecit
  18. Why not? Surely they know their roads well. And unlike the police where the money goes into a central pot it could be ring fenced to do something good. Issue here is there are half a dozen of you who complain about most things the council do. At least one of you can never say a good thing, even when you loosely agree, the response is comes with a caveat (and for clarity that is not you Spartacus). If you are so against the way things are run what is there a better way? Hitler, Stalin, Mao had alternative models, but I doubt if you would like to live under those regimes. Bhutan is a very happy kingdom, again not sure most would like to move to that sort of society. Putting every decision out to a referendum would be daft. When I first started to discuss some of these issues on the ED section of the forum (we'd had many a big picture debate on the Lounge in the old days) I asked if Southwark were so bad why people didn't move to the outer boroughs where "they didn't agree with all this woke nonsense"
  19. Complain to London Buses, you can do it on line, then escalate to TfL/GLA. You can inform your councillor too
  20. Write to your MP to take up with Southern/DfT/rail regulator
  21. Lots of young kids already scoot to school. I've not seen any on e scooters.
  22. It's populist nonsense. Why are you condoning breaking the law? Why are you an apologist for entitled motorists? Traffic calming and good citizenship doesn't work. Better enforcement does. Sunak currently denying that he is not backtracking. All you are doing is supporting that To add have you seen how much people are fined by the police for speeding? - draconian or what, I bet it works though...... I expect a fixed price penalty by a local authority without points is preferable for many
  23. One thing we are happy to pay for. Choose your battles, and this isn't one of mine
  24. Exciting stuff on trambuses in the ED part of the forum. Well done TfL and Mayor Khan.
  25. To continue on the theme a better article: Speeding offences are usually enforced by the Met Police but the council said officers tend to concentrate on main roads and dual carriageways. The authority announced it was stepping in after revealing most of the complaints it receives are about drivers speeding on quieter residential streets. The council said the number of vehicles travelling over 25mph on the roads has fallen from 13per cent to 6.6pc on the roads since the introduction of the scheme. A Wandsworth Council spokesperson said, “We began this trial as part of our efforts to support the police and TfL with their speed enforcement work, and as our contribution to wider London efforts on Vision Zero. “Since the start of the trial we have seen a 1mph reduction in speeds and the number of vehicles travelling over 25mph dropping from 13pc to 6.6pc on the trial roads and up until this point have notified motorists who have been found to have breached the speed limit with a warning letter but have not issued any fines. “The Department for Transport has taken the decision to restrict access to details of registered vehicle keepers meaning we are now unable to contact drivers who are found to have been speeding. Naturally, we are disappointed with this decision and are having ongoing conversations with the Department for Transport regarding the future of the trial. “We remain committed as a council to doing all that we can to reduce the danger posed by speeding vehicles on our roads and hope that the Department for Transport recognises and supports our commitment to ensuring safety on our roads.” I've just been having a laugh at the DfT motorists policy. Only it is not funny. This is all about trying to win a few more votes by pandering to the motorists' lobby and back tracking on commitments from the last 13 years. Even you would agree Rocks. Fortunately no great bounce for those twonks in power.
