  1. Mark - I think you've just successfully summarised 32 pages of waffle...
  2. Surely the Hamlets beneficient owners wouldn't want the club's success to slide, would they ...? About these gates, so where does this money go then?
  3. Old warehouse next to swimming pool Hairdressers' warehouse shop doesn't look Art Deco Not sure which one John is referring to - he knows his architecture so maybe he's thinking about something else. ----- incidentally, the "back to the future" feature of Google maps also shows the old Monkey Puzzle tree which was a favourite of my son. It was overwhelmingly big for that front garden ...)
  4. That link to Friends of OTH is a model of erudite and informed commentary. I learnt a lot more from this one response than dozens of rambling posts by Blanche and her gang, whose posts seem scaremongering by comparison
  5. It would be good to hear from Peckhamplex on their approach to wages. There's not a lot of public info on Peckhamplex's finances. The cinema business is owned by Peckhamplex Ltd which is owned by John Reiss who is a well-connected PR businessesman, chairman of Premier PR (www.premiercomms.com). The cinema itself is leased from the council. From various press articles, John Reiss appears to be genuinely interested in building a community-focused cinmea with a real 'alternative' approach. That said, his house in one of Primose Hill's best streets does suggest that he is personally a long way from the poverty line... https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/02449371/filing-history/MzE2MjY1NDA1OWFkaXF6a2N4/document?format=pdf&download=0 As a small company, Peckhamplex's accounts are abbreviated and don't contain much info. They suggest that it made just ?65,000 net profit in YE Mar-16, but there's no insight into whether that is 'normal' profit or whether it is after management charges / interest that would have reduced it. Doesn't seem to be any unusual shareholder transactions though disclosure is scant.
  6. Just watched the highlights again. That own goal really was a shocker!
  7. Eynella was awful last week. Presumably dogs on their way to the park who just couldn't hold their crap in.
  8. A better cycle route is via Dulwich Park, on pavement along Dulwich Common then up College Road. But Crystal Palaxe is at the top of a hill (that's why they put the Palace there!) so it is always going to be hard work to get there.
  9. Also that turning right into Lyndhurst and turning right onto Holly Grice will also be more dangerous because both junctions will be narrower I particularly like "offset parking to reduce speed and allow manoeuvring" as if these were the same thing. Is there any way of stopping these monomaniacs? If it were someone else's money then I wouldn't mind so much. But it's not.
  10. So having built out the pavement on Bellenden Road, thus narrowing the road significantly, they are now adding a cycling contrafoow? So that's more dangerous for cyclists and reduced parking for residents. Brilliant. This is making the remodelling of Townley / East Dulwich Grove look restrained and well-planned. (More inflammatory comments edited)
  11. Rendel - it was Glennie's Corner, named after Dr Glennie who maintained an academy / school I think where the Grove Tavern now stands. Picture here: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/old-new-london/vol6/pp286-303 (scroll down halfway). The school closed in 1825 and according to the Walford book previously linked to, Dr Glennie's house was "taken down" at about the same time. The Grove Tavern was apparently built by 1863 and is mentioned in Walford (1878). The site of the Grove Tavern on the 1862 map was taken by "Grove Cottage" which does not look to share a footprint with either the school or the pub. I'm not sure how all of this detail helps identify whether the painting is of 'Dulwich Grove'!
  12. John - I hesitate before disagreeing with you, but here goes: aside from the shape of the building, why do you think your photo is of Lordship Lane and not College Rd / Grange Lane? The tollhouse on College Road was also cruxiform - see here: http://www.motco.com/map/81006/SeriesSearchPlatesFulla.asp?mode=query&artist=390&other=988&x=11&y=11 The road junction in your photo looks more like a right-angle than a "v" i.e. more like College Rd + Grange Lane than Lordship Lane + Court Lane.
  13. I meant where is itvon the picture?
  14. Where's the "tollbar" building shown here? http://www.motco.com/map/81006/SeriesSearchPlatesFulla.asp?mode=query&artist=390&other=941&x=11&y=11
  15. Good call. Lamppost even seems to be in same position.
  16. @ d.b. this is quite interesting : http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201617/cmselect/cmtrans/64/6406.htm#_idTextAnchor013 Govia receives about ?1bn from the government to run Thameslink, Great Northern and Southern franchises (but none of the ticket income) which is apparently sized to cover all costs of operating the service and provide a profit margin of "about 1.5% over the life of the contract" (p19 of this http://www.go-ahead.com/content/dam/go-ahead/corporate/documents/Investors/Presentations/2016/FY-16-FINAL-02-09-1559.pdf.downloadasset.pdf). However, for the year end 2nd July 2016, GTR "did not contribute to profitability" and Go-Ahead only expected the franchise to "begin contributing to rail division profits once the Thameslink programme is complete and that's in 2018". If you've got a spare year, the full franchise agreement is here: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjNheC858bRAhXnKsAKHT5EAE8QFgggMAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fuploads%2Fsystem%2Fuploads%2Fattachment_data%2Ffile%2F525766%2Ftsgn-franchise-agreement.pdf&usg=AFQjCNHvHWRMPp_7Yb6yd6mc3pKoKTcSqw. All 672 pages of it. Which makes me think the only winners out of this whole situation are Eversheds.
  17. To be clear, I'm not making a political point here, just recording what I've been told by some friends of mine in the industry (not at Southern). Maybe this is already well-known though I've not had it spelled-out to me so clearly before. Apparently what is at stake here is RMT's status within the system: at the moment, no train can run without a guard (RMT union members) and so RMT has a very strong bargaining position. Drivers are represented by ASLEF which has apparently historically been less militant (though maybe this is changing e.g. Tosh McDonald). If the Govt gets its way then although they will *aim* to run all trains with an onboard customer service operator (or whatever they're called), trains will still be able to run if no customer service staff as available e.g. if RMT has called a strike. This would weaken the RMT's hold over the system which presumably would lead to lower wages and / or changes to operating models. I still don't know who is right or wrong in this dispute, though almost my whole commute is generally on trains without guards (overground, tube) and sometimes without drivers (DLR). However, if this really is a fight over the position / future of RMT then we could be in for a very long haul - the miners' strike lasted for just under 12 months. Particularly given the intransigence of this government (see jr doctors) and that it involves 2 fairly militant unions.
  18. From the shadows, seems more likely looking North-east
  19. @ Vik - thanks. I had no idea that parade existed!
  20. One Tower Bridge is reopened, that's a better and nicer route than Greenwich foot tunnel. Skip over Old Kent Road to go via Mawby Road, Fortune Place, Oxley Close, Chaucer Drive, Lynton Road and then Willow Walk. Cable Street has a good off-road cycle path from Tower Hill to Limehouse. If you're feeling really brave, the Rotherhithe Tunnel does actually permit cyclists!
  21. Was there a tall mast at Telegraph Hill? E.g. http://www.new-cross.net/history-of-telegraph-hill/
  22. Suggest they aim for an Overground train to West Croydon (every 15 minutes, takes 20 minutes) and then walk to East Croydon - it's only about 10 minutes between them, plus you get to enjoy some of the finest architecture in south London.
  23. DiD - I'm a cyclist and I disagree: the one-way system is easy - 11 years commuting through it and I've never felt threatened.
  24. Forgot there was a strike on. Fair enough. I usually cycle or run - limited scope for my legs to strike - I'm a very fair boss ...
  25. Is it normal for there to be no trains from ED to LB between 8:30 and 9:33?? Nothing even to South Bermondsey
