  1. There would be more than a few spaces lost from converting unmarked streets to a CPZ. Also, depending on where they are coming from (and given the poor service to LB via N and E Dulwich) they would almost certainly be better off using Sydenham Hill, Brockley or Tulse Hill ...
  2. John - not sure what you mean. On Hindmans, 18 Half Moon Lane is for rent at ?42k p.a. for new FRI lease. How can you tell the rent hasn't gone up? or are you talking about a different property?
  3. @sjsl, not sure it is possible to effectively object to this now - isn't it a done deal? (btw, I agree with you. A CPZ tends to reduce total parking area and is only effective where a substantial amount of parking is from non-residents. No-one in their right mind would drive through Dulwich Village in the morning to park and ride at North Dulwich)
  4. Moreover, they appear to have sent out 37,700 ballot papers, much more than uncleglen said. FT says 46,000 doctors are affected by new contract http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/503a72e8-b915-11e5-bf7e-8a339b6f2164.html#axzz3wwkTOr4C . Not clear why they only balloted 82% of doctors affected, though maybe the others are not members of BMA. 76% response rate is incredibly high (much higher than turnout in a general election let alone local / European elections). And 98% vote in favour is pretty compelling. I think it's clear the BMA has a much stronger mandate for its position from those it represents than Jeremy Hunt does from the general electorate. [edit: I think BMA probably has a stronger mandate from the general electorate than Hunt as well, though that is harder to prove!] [edit 2: PS I am not a doctor ...]
  5. Forest Hill also worth a shout My experience of Dulwich has been pretty good provided you get there at 6.30 or else aim to finish about 8.30. Late night also better. If you're set on solitude then how about Brockwell Lido? http://www.fusion-lifestyle.com/centres/Brockwell_Lido/news/001_Lido_Winter_2016_Opening_Times

@ DF - sorry about that, hope your machine is ok @ JK - It looks to me like St Augustines but I'll leave you to battle that one with John Beasley and Steve Grindley! thanks for prompting me to find out about Observatory House. I couldn't find any pictures of it. Mike
  7. actually there are two things junior doctors want just now 1. not to have their take-home pay cut by 10-20% as a result of reclassfying their weekend hours (which they already work) as "normal". 2. Ensure NHS trusts continue to be restricted in their rostering to ensure safe coverage This is not about weekend working as doctors already do this (unlike many other parts of the NHS) and they did not start this battle to get paid more. I would also encourage you to look at what local council officers get paid, or London primary school teachers with 5 years experience. In fact, the only job that I'm aware of in the public sector that pays even worse is nursing and social work, both averaging about ?25-29k.
  8. Uncleglen, a registrar (5-6 years of formal academic training, with a further 10-15 years of practical experience) earns about the same as a tube driver. I don't think they are fairly paid for the job. Not sure the costs to train are directly linked to how much they should earn - if it cost only ?20k to train them then should they earn ?10k more? The fact is that becoming a doctor is hard work; if they had to pay for it themselves then there would be far fewer doctors all paid very considerably more. Also, I'd add that they also pay for rquired professional qualifications out of their own pocket (each costing >?1.5k) and have to take annual leave to study and take the exams Mike PS I am not a doctor ...
  9. I've just read in detail the proposals, including the 2013 consultation (available here http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/s37522/Bellenden%20Area%20-%20BRIEFING%20PAPER.pdf) They really are low-quality proposals and indicative of an unbelievably nanny-state mentality. As a cyclist, I feel able to make this comment: this sort of attitude displayed by Southwark, also recently evidenced in the ridiculous changes to Townley Rd / EDG junction, increases hostility and resentment towards cyclists. It is counterproductive and a waste of public money. I would strongly encourage others to comment before the deadline of 16th Jan. (reposting list to consultation again: https://consultations.southwark.gov.uk/environment-leisure/cyclingandwalkingimprovements/consult_view)
  10. Part of the joy of supporting a local team is walking down to the ground wearing pink and blue. Apparently a lot of fans were spotted getting on trains at London Bridge, having travelled from North London - transtranspontine? (just "pontine"?)
  11. I've never considered striking either but I can see the doctors' case. I don't think we should bring in national widespread private sector providers just to break the government's monopsony on health workers. I suspect that the government is seeking to introduce more private sector providers for the exact opposite reason i.e. to reduce costs.

    One Tree Hill

This is the link that I couldn't post before - select the top result and search page for sledge. [deleted on basis that it may be a harmful webpage]

    One Tree Hill

I had a link to a South East Central blog post that mentioned sledging down One Tree Hill in the 1980s but for some reason it won't post here. Weird.

Apologies - there seems to be something wrong with the links that meant I had to post them sequentially.

    One Tree Hill

I don't know the area quite well enough to say which slope of One Tree Hill this picture shows but I suggest you ask John Beasley or Steve Grindley 1. East Dulwich Through Time, John Beasley https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=FWiIAwAAQBAJ&lpg=PT117&ots=7fsxxaH-0C&dq=sheep%20%22one%20tree%20hill%22%20honor%20oak&pg=PT117#v=onepage&q&f=false 2. Sydenham Town blog post (search for one Tree Hill, about half way down) https://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?style=5&f=10&t=4140 3. Also, this suggests there was significantly less foliage back in Edwardian times
  16. I think it's almost fair to say that without Dulwich Hamlet FC, there wouldn't be a Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill.
  17. I made the effort last night to try to find the banner when coming home on my bike. In my efforts to crane my neck when going round the one-way system, I nearly came off. It is not possible to safely see the banner when cycling.
  18. @Spider69 - now you mention it, when I was cycling down Lyndhurst Way this morning, I was more focused on the road and cars than banners on the side of the road, so yes I must have missed it. Clearly what is needed here is special cycle measures where I can safely read all manner of roadside advertising, insulated from having to consider other road users.
  19. @RahRahRah - dead right. I mostly use a fairly rubbish bike around town but I wouldn't leave it at Brixton all day without bolting the front wheel to the frame and removing the saddle. Ditto for Peckham Rye station and Nunhead. I cycle through the one-way system most days and have done for years - honestly, I think it's fine and is one of the few road schemes locally that actually works i.e. smooth flow of road, cycle and foot traffic. For walking, the only problem is the lack of pavement on RHS of Bellenden heading north after Holly Grove, though it's not onerous to cross the road. There are many worse areas locally for cycling e.g. Bellenden Rd between Maxted & Choumert, East Dulwich Grove junction with Lordship Lane, Turney Rd onto Dulwich Village, Herne Hill junction, Peckham Road / Kelly Road, the whole of the South Circular. The only problems I see in this gyratory are: (a) the slippery manhole cover as you turn off Bellenden onto Chadwick which is a real hazard (b) sadly, many cyclists deciding they can't be bothered to go around the one-way system and heading the wrong way up Bellenden between Highshore and Chadwick roads.
  20. The Heber School broadcast is excellent - a great example of imaginative teaching and enterprising kids. The site manager Andrew Wicks (Proma Construction) does indeed confirm 10 accommodation units in total across floors 1, 2, and 3. He seems to be quite certain when saying this. He also says he has two clients, one being M&S and the other being a "private client" for the accommodation. The kids were not able to find out the landlord. According to the Land Registry, it is Duncan Watson, who runs a property development company called Dunward Properties. Mr Watson seems to have been a property developer for about 15 years since he was 24, and owns a handful of properties across south and west London.
  21. I'm amazed to find that it appears to be officially verifiable that Jason Statham lives in a not-so-grand semi in SE21. However, this may be about to change as according to the Mirror, he's just spend $12m on a place in Malibu: http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/jason-statham-rosie-huntington-whiteley-buy-5416771 Perhaps the Crown & Greyhound has been closed so long that he's given up on Dulwich?
  22. @bic basher - I know and appreciate you are a rail enthusiast but please don't excuse poor rail connections with bad bus action
  23. @ worldwiser - probably just better to accept that ED is indeed a unique and special place rather than re-opening the CPZ thread ...
  24. Sorry to return to this, but is it actually confirmed that the playground is actually going to close? So far I've seen 1. Southwark's material, which suggests it will remain open http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200557/peckham_and_nunhead_regeneration/3843/peckham_rye_park_and_common/2 2. a message from a Labour Councillor, which also suggests it will remain open - albeit the way it is "run" may be revised including potentially "changes" to opening hours (further details of which are being worked out and will be posted when available). So before we start a petition what is the story and what are we protesting against? (edited to say that Guardian article really is depressing. So this book could never be set there: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Voices-Park-Anthony-Browne/dp/0552545643/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8)
  25. Sumner Road and Friary Road and surrounding estates - no problems. In fact, Friary Rd is now a little chic. I'm looking for a challenge - I'm not very fast so if I come across somewhere genuinely dangerous then I will need to get a personal best to escape.
