I run all around London (for fun) and I can confirm I have never come across a no-go area anywhere in south or east London. Yes, I am a bit more careful at night but still no issue with anywhere including Angell Town, Burgess Park, north Peckham, Tower Hamlets, Carey Gardens, Winstanley Estate, Tulse Hill. Grok - name one street or estate that I should test out and I will report back how it goes, both at daytime and night. If you like, then please name 5 areas and I'll rank them for you.

Are we sure it isn't part of Southwark's plan to facilitate cyclists through the borough?

Peckham Rye Adventure Playground to Close??
mikeb replied to stephen509's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
is it certain that this playground faces closure? Southwark's website suggests that the playground will continue and that park play activities will be enhanced. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200557/peckham_and_nunhead_regeneration/3843/peckham_rye_park_and_common/2 [extract from webpage] Updated plan: =========== Works to the car park wasn?t part of the project, but has now been included. The updated proposal shows the new car park moved to the other side of Straker?s Road. The new plan retains the 5-a-side football pitch in its entirety. The playroom will be located next to the Adventure Playground building so that both facilities can use the spaces flexibly. More toilets, meeting, storage and office space can be available to all groups who use the Playroom and Adventure Playground. Once the car park is moved, the new play area will be built where the current car park is. The area is bigger and the new space can include an element of water play and hopefully sand play and fit for purpose play equipment. -

@Spanglysteve - you absolutely need to hear the sound to appreciate it -
I'm enjoying this season's run of good form, hope it doesn't fizzle out. If the Hamlet do get promoted, would this mean they would need to make significant changes to the stadium or the way matches are held? e.g. due to more stringent rules.

Now everyone has an Oyster, just opening the gates doesn't get people out quicker as you still have to touch out. They should install some standalone Oyster pads to speed things up. Would be pretty cheap.

HSBC Dulwich Branch Is Closing

That Dulwich branch of Barclays, does it actually provide useful services? I think it has no cashpoint and is only open 28 hours a week. -
Traffic jams around Red Post Hill/East Dulwich Grove

Townley Green - not sure the projected increase in population of wider London, most of which is happening to the east of London and further out, is a good reason to restrict transport options in an already-densely populated central / urban area. Let's be clear: no-one in their right mind voluntarily drives for pleasure in London's rush hours. But plenty have to for many diverse reasons that are not hard to imagine, whether it relates to their children, health or their job. By all means consult on the changes, make incremental changes etc, but it seems to me that there has recently been a step-change in attitude that is driven more the need to "do something" - anything - rather than engage communities in viable change. Also: more carrot, less stick. -
It struck me on the way home tonight that perhaps we are being too negative about the 'improvements' to this junction. Much like the Dowager Duchess of Grantham, we are fearful of change and don't see the opportunities that it can present - if we are only prepared to change the way that we approach life. To this end, I think we should celebrate the latest addition to public space, being the enormous pavement now on the south side of this junction. We could call it Townley Square, if it were square (though not that that stopped the inhabitants of Choumert Square). Maybe St Barnabas Place? Now all we need to do is to find a use for this unexpected civic amenity that Southwark has accidentally bestowed on us. To start the ball rolling, how about * skate park - the quality of the acres of paving really is very good and shouldn't be wasted on mere pedestrians * bandstand - Dulwich really should have a proper one, * Town Crier spot - maybe one of the lollypop persons could double up on this? They could read out headlines from Southwark News * Speakers Corner - everyone from this forum gets a free try-out * British Bulldogs court - to complement Alleyn's fives court down the road * light aircraft landing strip - maybe start off with gliders until we've mastered the air traffic control aspects * stocks / pillories (I'm afraid I don't know the difference) - we could move these up the road from Calton Ave so that Dulwich Estate can build its mansions in peace * practice / display spot for that wonderful unicyclist who goes to Alleyn's * Perhaps most likely of all, Alleyn's could annexe this for its own use, claiming some ancient title

I think the private schools have a far bigger catchment area - suspect more people get the bus from Putney than walk in from Dulwich -

No through route at Loughborough Junction
mikeb replied to mikeb's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@ Dulwichquine - I think the exact reason for the road closure is to stop people driving from Brixton Road through to Herne Hill or Dulwich, and force these journeys through Brixton or Camberwell (and in due course, encourage people to give up and take the bus or cycle, or taxi). -
can we calm this thread down a bit please? I too am bothered by airplane noise and particularly in the summer when I can't sleep beyond 5am if my windows are open (and so I have to sleep with them closed even at 30 degrees). I am also surprised that other people can ignore it though I don't doubt that they are able to, and I'm somewhat envious to be honest. I don't think the noise has got particularly worse in the past 5 years but I'm also very dubious of Heathrow's claims that overall noise levels will be lower in 2025 even with a third runway open. More to the point, I continue to think we've missed an opportunity to relocate Heathrow entirely. At some point, we will realise the danger and folly of flying 80 million people every year right over the heads of c. 8m people, and of forcing Heathrow to operate at 99% capacity. We should have taken the opportunity of record low interest rates to build a properly sized airport in a proper location NW of London that maximises national access, minimises noise pollution for those overflown and improves international connectivity. Another example of UK short-termism.

All based on public info: Ivan Bateman bought this property in 2007. He is front man and director of St Aidans Group Limited (Guernsey based). He now seems to live on Jersey, in a nice place by the sea in the south-west of the island. But most of his developments seem to be south London (Crystal Palace, Norwood, Croydon, Brockley), so wonder if he was a local at some point. For a previous development in Brockley, apparently this was for his own pension plan and not resale / further development. He seems to have started property development about 10 years ago. http://councilmeetings.lewisham.gov.uk/Data/Planning%20Committee%20A/20090903/Agenda/a760b9cac780421e876bfa73ec7a33a8Units25AshbyMewsAppendix3September2009.PDF

My TV is now repaired thanks to Chris Buck from Aerials Installed (http://www.hernehill.org.uk/need-better-picture-your-televison-aerials-installed) He did a great job, came same day and fixed it all. Needed new cable down from existing aerial.

Also the crossing across Townley Road between the junction with EDG and the junction with Calton is surely unnecessary and restricts the width of the road making it more difficult to get two cars abreast ahead of the junction - and squeezing the cycle lane further. There is the zebra crossing only 30 yards down the road.
