I think we need (a) more detail on which floods this could prevent e.g. how often, how severe, where and (b) what will be the impact on the park throughout the year particularly when it's not flooded. As I said, my first impression was that it was hard to work out (b) from the drawings though I will have another go. The council's document refers to floods in 1984, 2004 and 2007. Does anyone remember more detail on these? There's not a lot in the press except for the 2007 flood, where Brockwell Park is mentioned.

link here http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/3681/herne_hill_and_dulwich_flood_risk_management_proposal from a quick look through, it's not straightforward to see the extent of impact on the park. Would have been helpful to have seen the exhibition. But I will say that citing the HH floor last year is a pretty disingenuous and alarmist way of garnering support. The flood at HH was caused by a burst water main so is irrelevant to flood plain discussions. [edited to correct for the photo being from 2004 not 2013]

I take this back - they just arrived ! Well done Southwark!

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to take bags of rubbish (non-recyclables)? Bin men emptied blue bin today (as they did last week) but haven't come for rubbish for over two weeks. Thanks

I'm pretty sure any danger from wearing earphones is outweighed by the benefits of actually doing some exercise I'd recommend some bluetooth wireless headphones to avoid wire entanglement.

@mMicMac - thanks, as you can see though I am a longtime resident of edf, I am some way off the 10,000 posts. I hope you make good use of your remaining 1,004 posts before you too disappear into the firmament.

Nice to see all the old familiar names posting on that link. I can never keep track of who renamed themselves and carried on and who disappeared for good. Is Keef still posting?

Did anyone go to the open day? -
I've had this before. Angle grinder is the key, though you will need to plug it in somewhere. Car jack will not do a decent lock - I broke one and was very apologetic. And yes, the police stopped me halfway through but showing some ID and being awfully polite seemed to do the trick. Good luck - Free the Herne Hill One!

is there really nothing that can be done about this? There is clearly a problem, they are unbelievably loud. 85dB is apparently the same as a tractor cab. I would have said that the buses were more like a road drill >100 dB http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/advice.htm

researching family history in Camberwell and Dog Kennel Hill

Carole Actually, if you're interested, the railings that you can see in the foreground of the photo are supposed to be second world war stretchers - more detail here: http://www.dulwichsociety.com/2013-autumn/915-dulwich-world-war-ii-commemorative-plaques Mike -

Carole There is still a Fernie House in the estate, on Quorn Road here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.46361&mlon=-0.07944#map=18/51.46361/-0.07944 And picture of Fernie House attached from Google Street View. Good luck with your research. Mike -
What happened to the St Thomas More Hall?
mikeb replied to minder's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
BigED - you are right. Apologies, I was being flippant. I should have namechecked ex-Threshers. Unlurked - all of those things could be valuable, though I fear they may still attract people to the area. On a more serious note, I'm not sure we are short of health centres in the immediate area and I would have thought the police counter could go in lots of places - lack of will not space is the constraing factor (and actually the hall is about 5x larger than required for this). As for a community space, I don't think the hall was all that well-used before it was closed (and yes, I had been there myself). Father Gerry's posting goes through this in some detail. -

Perhaps the USP of the the new cinema is that it will facilitate getting 'tanked up' while watching cool new films? Unlurked - do you have any suggestions as to what should be done with St Thomas More Hall? Presumably something that doesn't attract people to the area, either during the day (lest the "chains" notice the success of LL) or the night (to avoid marauding drunkards). A 'shop' like the one next to the butchers? some inexplicable council office that never seems to be open (like Foxton's used to be)? You're right it's a tricky one - maybe we're better off with the Hall remaining empty. [edited for typo] -

@unlurked, you seem to be somewhat focused on the downsides of a building is simply showing films that (mostly entirely sober) people want to see. Whenever I go to the cinema, I somehow don't get anywhere near as drunk as when I spend the evening at one of the many pubs on Lordship Lane. -
40 new homes 2/2A Crystal Palace Road
mikeb replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For the record, I agree that the property needs redeveloping - it's been an eyesore for years and it's the wrong place for a light industrial warehouse. But it's going to be a very public site, visible from Goose Green, the playground, the church, the sports centre, the restaurants on EDR, etc.. And it will be there for a long time. So the council should make sure it's a quality plan. -

Trehaven normally seems to use Nicholas Taylor Associates as agent (see the Evening Standard link above for the Chelsea site). They must have thought Mr Humphries would be more appropriate for a site in Southwark. Some other local developers seem to agree. * http://betterelephant.org/blog/2013/04/09/report-uncovers-corruption-at-the-elephant/ -
40 new homes 2/2A Crystal Palace Road
mikeb replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Mick Mac asked for some more information on Crystal Palace Properties Limited. I've done a bit of digging. And I started this post by thinking it would be a straightforward case of a property development company with maybe one or two investments. But now (about two hours later), I've been through 16 group companies and property investments totalling maybe ?50m or more. All of the information below is public and usually recorded as a consequence of maintaining limited liability of the investment vehicles. In the interest of balance, I would note that property development means disturbing vested interests and can result in unfair media reporting. Crystal Palace Road Limited is part of the Trehaven Group Limited. Previous SPVs have been Chrisfys 1, 2, etc., although other group affiliates include partnerships like Old Kent Road LLP and Brixton Road LLP. The constant factor in the wider property group is the involvement of the following five people as directors / shareholders * Charles Allison (appears to live in Holland Park) * Simon Bakewell http://www.astonrose.co.uk/news/newsdetail/simon-bakewell-appointed-as-chairman/171 * Philip Nelson * William Woodward Fisher * Rebecca McKinnon (as company secretary) Also Magma Auditing LLP of Rugby. Some history on these Messer Bakewell and Nelson here here http://www.fasttrack.co.uk/fasttrack/leagues/dbDetails.asp?siteID=2&compID=416&yr=2000 And here http://www.propertyweek.com/nelson-and-bakewell-company-collapses/3104748.article Miss McKinnon, who is Company Secretary, is also company secretary of Kensal Properties Limited, which was recently in the Evening Standard http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/faked-emails-support-flats-plan-for-library-8829637.html One of the more-frequently used trading names is Chrisfys Properties. There is plenty of public information available on Chrisfys and its subsidiaries. It mainly develops property in London and South-east e.g. *. Houndslow http://www.forsters.co.uk/index.php?page=15&person=14 * Barking http://www.barkinganddagenhampost.co.uk/news/heritage/barking_magistrates_court_plans_raise_heritage_concerns_1_2236691 * Chelsea http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/rory-bremner-helps-defeat-plans-to-shoe-horn-new-house-into-green-sliver-in-chelsea-8941455.html * Iver http://www.capitasymonds.co.uk/pdf/Notice%20Underlease.pdf * Southend http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/792232.Millions_to_be_invested_in_Kursaal/ I note the attempt to renegotiate s106 agreement in Southend; times were tough in 2008 for leveraged property companies. ** edit Jan-15 Apologies, I can no longer find the article relating to s106 at Southend, not sure what happened there. Fortunately, it turns out Trehaven has sought to redevelop s106 agreements elsewhere and more recently - in Hounslow, Bedfont Pits - see point #53 here http://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/(S(0jvmmq45oktuyd55cs22ct45))/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=581&MId=6891 End edit ** Digging further into the group, I note companies such as Edgehill Securities and Padmanor Investments, which seem to be largish companies in their own right. I also note income from film LLPs such as Howzat Media LLP and Big Screen Productions 20 LLP. Odd that a property development company would receive income from film production companies. I note recent legislation reducing tax relief on investment into film production companies. So overall, I would note * very experienced property development group * not afraid of taking financial and planning risks * adept at using limited liability to ring-fence development risk * publicly-reported debate on their development tactics (often public reporting is a minor proportion of private speculation) I'm sure Southwark Council is capable of handling these development proposals fairly and will appropriately weigh the intentions of the developer with the interests of local residents. ??edit some time later?? Also found some interesting news regarding the business carried on at the warehouse http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/00,news,13417,5632,00.htm Southwark news link stopped working, replacement here: http://www.xact.org.uk/investigation/news/art-13.html -

James - this mismanagement deserves to be investigated. How can we find out who the project manager was and their explanation of how they missed the budget by 50%? -
Public Transport to Lambeth Bridge - any suggestions?

Thanks KK. It was mainly Camberwell New Road between Camberwell Green and Vassall Road. It's just a bit frustrating given it's not very far! -

Taking the 185 at 7:40am got me to Lambeth Bridge at 8:35. Is this standard? If it were just me, I'd cycle or run as it's only 4 miles but I'm taking children. thanks -

I used K&O the other week - highly recommended. For some reason they offer a discount on removing wasps nest during the summer. http://www.kandopestcontrol.co.uk/page5.htm
