  1. John - seems a few learned historians thought it means "village in the valley" http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/william-young/the-history-of-dulwich-college-down-to-the-passing-of-the-act-of-parliament-dis-586/1-the-history-of-dulwich-college-down-to-the-passing-of-the-act-of-parliament-dis-586.shtml - chapter 1 And reference on p16 of pdf to Denny Allport's book "Dulwich Village" also suggesting same (available on ebay if you don't already have this). http://planningonline.southwark.gov.uk/DocsOnline/Documents/247255_1.pdf
  2. I used to go through the foot tunnel but eventually the sights of New Cross / Deptford / backside of Greenwich got a bit depressing. So now I use AE's route, with the slight change of going to the end of Bellenden Rd then up the canal path between Peckham Pulse and the library - genuinely lovely in the spring and summer (but probably best to be careful in the dark). The other occasional joy of AE's route is when you have to stop to let a boat under Tower Bridge or out of Limehouse basin. In terms of time, I find that it's hard to consistently break 30mins if you stop at all the lights, no matter how fast you go in between. If you really want the most direct route and you're not in a hurry, it's probably through Surrey Quays and then over the ferry by the Hilton hotel.
  3. Joom - good point. Plus they are very deliberately standing outside only one half of the house - if it had been one house then I would have expected the photographer (perhaps the father of the household?) to have included both sides of the house.
  4. We have a little one at the little fingers in village. We all love it. He has skipped in everyday for the last six months. Feel free to pm me.
  5. From Breakingviews today, advocating capital gains on residential property (and abolition / reduction in stamp duty / mansion tax). http://www.breakingviews.com/uk-would-gain-from-homeowner-tax-switch/21072613.article
  6. Quite a few years ago it seems See below from the "Charity Framework" part of the website. John, I think you may want to have a word with them about their definition of "East Dulwich" ... 269292 - EAST DULWICH SOCIETY DUE DOCUMENTS RECEIVED Other names: E D S (Working Name) Governing document: CONSTITUTION ADOPTED 15/07/1974 Area of benefit: PLEASE SEE OBJECTS Organisation type: STANDARD REGISTRATION Where it operates: SOUTHWARK Registration history: 24 April 1975 Registered Charitable objects: I) TO STIMULATE PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE AREA OF BENEFIT II) TO PROMOTE HIGH STANDARDS OF PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE IN THE AREA OF BENEFIT III) TO SECURE THE PRESERVATION PROTECTION DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF FEATURES OF HISTORIC OR PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE AREA OF BENEFIT. AREA OF BENEFIT BEING THE AREA BOUNDED BY LORDSHIP LANE, WOODVALE, FOREST HILL ROAD, PECKHAM RYE AND EAST DULWICH ROAD PLUS THE AREA TO THE EAST OF FOREST HILL ROAD KNOWN AS THE PARK ESTATE.
  7. So why do we have exactly the right amount of debt in the economy just now?
  8. I don't think removing the tax shield on interest would make it difficult to start businesses. I'd be quite happy to see the change as revenue neutral with cuts in corporation tax (actually more likely to get dividends tax deductible with higher corporation tax but that's another story). We need less debt in the economy - why are we subsidising it? And no, CGT on house price gains would not make it more difficult to move house * it's on gains not the value. Actually, I think it makes more sense than stamp duty, certainly at the higher levels * happy to see RPI indexation as you get for business and used to get for personal tax * the whole point is to reduce house price inflation / volatility Just think: if houses are a necessity, then why do you care about CGT on gains? And if they're an investment then why do we subsidise them?
  9. Couple of thoughts yes, remove tax deductibility of interest across the board not just for property. Skews capital structure decision towards debt away from equity. While we're at it, property gains should be taxable on realisation: if people are going to treat property like an investment asset then it should be taxed like one. Much of London's demand for property is from overseas investors looking for somewhere to park capital. The London property market in particular ticks a lot of boxes vs other international asset classes: * stable and attractive legal regime * benign tax environment (no capital gains tax for non-resident landlords) * history of controls on new builds leading to structurally high and rising property prices * and on top of all this, a nice place to live - not too hot, not too cold, good liberal cosmopolitan society with lots of like-minded people. Not perfect, but not bad So UK buyers accounted for only 58% of all London transactions in 2012 (only 27% for new builds). http://www.knightfrank.co.uk/news/70-per-cent-of-london-offices-sold-in-2012-went-to-foreign-buyers-01595.aspx Yes, I'm sure they're focused on the top end but it filters all the way down the property chain. Belgravia to Kensington to Notting Hill to Fulham to Clapham to East Dulwich. Problem is that I don't think we want to change much about what attracts people to London except perhaps relaxing planning and the tax regime. So other than changing these factors, we are into market intervention with Londonmix and Huguenot's ideas being examples.
  10. I know, I know, I should be more cynical. But still seems worse than normal. I'll take the temperature again next week. In the meantime, back to the Pope. I've heard Richard Dawkins has put himself forward.
  11. As I was flicking through the main forum, I noted that 9 out of 30 threads on page 1 are about anti-social behaviour (robberies, muggings, late night parties, dog poo, scams, etc). I know this does not mean that 30% of ED life is like this but still a little depressing.
  12. At 9am this morning, south circular was stationary NW-bound from the Grove through Forest Hill to Catford.
  13. Computedshorty Thanks for the memories. For Milo Road, some maps show the alleyway continuing past 1a and 2a, e.g. here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=533683&Y=174277&A=Y&Z=115 Do you know if the passage goes all the way to the houses on Townley Road at the end? Also, re Milo Road, I think Tillings used the garage area as stables for the route to the Plough. Mike
  14. We have a little one on at the Dulwich village little fingers and we love it!
  15. garnwba - worth a try though First Mate - google can tell you, as with everything. Not sure it's going to prove anything though about a CPZ in ED though. I think 20+ pages of exhaustive comments covered all the points last time. Does anyone fancy doing a public service and summarising all the arguments pro and con?
  16. Vote for this to be moved to Lounge as this is about SE5 / Lambeth, neither of which are East Dulwich (unless John K tells me otherwise, e.g. John Ruskin's old house / Greendale)
  17. Lowlander, I think your link showed leaving CW on platform 3, arriving PR on unknown platform, leaving platform PR from 1 and arriving ND on platform 2. Does anyone know which platforms the Overground trains will use? i.e. 1 and 2 (the ones that used to be the SLL platforms) or 3 and 4, which were for fast trains to Victoria?
  18. 1. I get fed up when companies claim they are paying lots of tax because of PAYE - that is tax that I am paying, not the company or its shareholders. 2. How much of the interest paid by Nero is being taxed on receipt? Sure some of the interest received is taxable but plenty is not. Yes, interest should not be tax deductible, completely the wrong incentive for a company. 3. However, let's be clear: corporations are not people - everything is ultimately owned by or for the benefit of individuals. So by all means tax corporations if it's easier than directly taxing people (particularly overseas or wealthy people) but let's be honest about the incidence of this tax: it is ultimately borne by shareholders, employees and customers. 4. Tax on turnover is unworkable - what is the appropriate level of tax? Operating profit margins vary across industries from 1% to 40%, and it is often those with slim margins that are providing the most useful goods to lower-paid people.
  19. Any good recommendations for fixing electric underfloor heating? So far all electricians have declined to get involved. thanks Mike
  20. Bryony Just to reassure you that it is posisble to be very happy riding a modest hybrid bike for years! Despite being slower / less glamorous, a hybrid has a couple of advantages over a road bike: (a) often a bit more robust, particularly the wheels - which is a good thing given occasional unexpected potholes (b) less desirable to potential thieves, which means you'll be happier locking it up in public when you're out - so you're more likely to use it not just for commuting. Happy cycling!
  21. Thanks everyone. If it helps, I live just off Lordship Lane, about halfway up. Last week I ran through Dulwich and Belair parks, up Croxted Rd and Herne Hill to Champion Hill and then back down the side of Peckham Rye - this was just over 10k.
  22. Can anyone recommend some 10km running routes around the local area? I've rashly signed up for a triathlon next year and need to get a lot fitter. I could just go round and round the parks but I'd rather see a bit more of the neighbourhood, including a few hills. Thanks Mike
  23. Computershorty's comments on traffic are relevant: I live near here but no longer use the Lordship Lane junctions with either Heber or Goodrich roads as visibility is just too poor given the bends and parked cars. I wouldn't like to live there and have to do it regularly. I note the Acorn report also suggests that the Fred Francis Centre is also likely to be redeveloped soon into residential accommodation.
  24. I've seen the following instructions: 1. disconnect your TV (or freeview box) from both the mains and the outside aerial for 30 seconds. 2. connect the power only and retune - you should get zero channels 3. reconnect the aerial and retune again. Or buy some boxsets ... http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,967794
  25. At the risk of coming across as a sewer nerd (too late?), see attached another map: fewer surface features but the contours are interesting.
