  1. 4! The number of times I've seen 3 wheelers topple... Don't do it!
  2. Depends on which part of islington you are in Zeban and yes, you can keep south london. Dulwich is suburban and aptly named. A friend and I had a minor dispute over whether it meant dull or not. His finding was that Dulwich was derived from "Dill Field". My better research came up that "Dill" is old saxon for Dull. Dull Field it is. Different strokes for different folks. I got fed up with the posh/common black/white segregations. I'm fond of Dulwich, it has a charm but I wouldn't live there again and by the looks of it neither does a lot of this board. meh.
  3. I moved back to islington. Suburbia was not for me. Central enough that we have cctv everywhere which keeps crime down and very quiet in the evenings when everyone has left work. I love it.
  4. My child went to Rainbow smiles for a few months and I have to say it was terrible. Shouting at the kids, dragging them and yanking at them when they didn't listen to the shouting. The owners let their teenage boys look after the children (illegally, underage and no crb check). My child came home bruised regularly and when I asked to look at the cctv they themselves promised was there for parents to see, it was unavaible for the incidents. My child became worringly withdrawn. Rainbow Smiles regularly have spaces open because people take their children out after a time and there have been lots of complaints. There seems to be an awareness about the dragging and shouting but I guess some people are comfortable with it, personally, I didn't agree with. Looks great initially but having gone through it, I wouldn't inflict it on anyone, let alone my baby. Just put your name down for Nellys and hope for the best, they were asking for people on here a few months back, sometimes a spot opens up...
  5. Dulwich is now in the top ten areas for crime in london. I found a really good way to avoid the car, bike, pot plant theift, the break ins, the muggings, the scammers, the pub prices was just to leave dulwich.
  6. Not a cyclist or a dog owner but it seems very clear to me where the road is and where the masses of open field is. One would think common sense would prevail but then those dog owners seem blind to the signs which say not to take dogs off leads and don't care about terrorizing young children. Seeing as dulwich park hires out bikes and the road is VERY wide why don't the dog owners keep off the road. They could also keep their dogs on leads so I don't have to drag the rotten shit machines away from my child. I say well done becca.
  7. I did complain to the stall holder. I saw a bag I liked, gave over my money very politely and waited for my change. As I was waiting I looked a little more at her stall and saw three golliwog dolls. I said I was not interested in the bag anymore, could I have my money back please. She asked why and I said I do not spend my money with people who sell gollywogs, why would you you sell these things? She had no come back except to give me my change and look down at the ground until I walked away. Someone else noticed my question and took a photo of the offending items. Usually I would have made more of a fuss to be honest but my young child was with me and I didn't want to cause a scene and ruin the nice experience of the fair in general. I was quite offended by its presence and couldn't understand why someone would think that was ok. So I thought I would ask here. Just because sometimes a conversation has an ugly element to it doesn't mean you should hide and avoid it because it just gets uglier - be brave and tackle it. Doesn't require a fight just a bit of manning up. I suppose I take these things seriously because I don't think somethings need to be perpetuated.
  8. People have called me a liar. Things (and people) in life are not always so black and white. I was merely offering explanation. I'm not after any kind of argument but rather a reasonable discussion. I was curious to know what the consensus is on such subjects. As the topic is racial in nature I understand that people will subvert the focus away from the topic and come up with special and random defense. It is possible to keep it a discussion. A ten year old is at the mercy of his parents choices and not what I'm discussing Kruger - the point is why are people still trying to sell golliwogs when they are something to be embarrassed about and forgotten. When discussed with various black persons the consensus is unanimous - this is some offensive nastiness that does not need to be happening at all. In this instance in particular does not need to come with a matching mug and plate set. If you want to side step colour then when I saw nazi memorabilia being sold at last years dulwich fair on an antiques stall I thought that was quite dodgy too. This photo is from the stall. She was selling girly bedroom stuff.

I'm not a liar. I didn't say I was white either. I'm an of mixed heritage which includes malay, spanish, irish, english, dutch and bajan. When I was a teenager if you weren't white you were seen as black but as an adult I take time to consider all my makers including my white family. I This is not a troll post but rather a serious question. I get that people round these parts are quite ignorant in regards to black culture and think that gollywogs and lynch mobs are a joking matter but these are quite seriously offensive things to black people and are not taken lightly. I appreciate that perhaps you don't find a black person depicted as a slave offensive but perhaps gollyhonky should get a whip and some shackles so so the non white folk can have a big laugh about how english folk used to travel the globe and capture people to keep as pets and use for hard labour. Hilarious. I'm not a troll and don't think such things are funny or worth discussing for amusement. Granted it has now been established that there is a collective of daily mail writers living among you so I'm not expecting anything amazing but there is clearly a need for discussion and education on racial matters around here because you lot come up with some serious BS sometimes.
  10. Yes, I found it offensive. What is not offensive about having a toy that is based on a black male slave? Specifically a slave that the super rich would have to display their wealth. So rich they could afford to keep a field worker dressed civilly and have him in the house and obedient. It was seen as a thrill and a bit of a challenge. The reason there was a golliwog on the robinson's jam is that this black male slave got to hand out the jam in privileged homes. Hence making it to the jam jar as an aspirational ideal. Do I think it is offensive to have a toy that depicts a black person as pet and play thing specifically within the setting of a slave? That children would keep. There was good reason that robinsons finally lost the gollywog and they had to remake noddy. We've all seen the extras episode. I'd have dumped her in a second. A golly is a golliwog Gollywog Just because some enterprising soul decided to drop the wog bit down the line does not detract away from the original idea. No I'm not black and I don't think you have to be to care.
  11. ...Did anyone see the golliwogs for sale? I was a bit surprised.
  12. The seed swap was brilliant, thanks a million to the ladies to bought the perpetual spinach along I've been looking for some for ages!
  13. do you feed your tree and water it?
  14. I would be very happy come the season to run some kind of local produce swap.
  15. Not really. (fair enough bunny). You would not crack jokes about the holocaust to jewish people You wouldn't think that genocide is a laughing matter so why is it suddenly ok to attempt satire using lynch mobs when lynch mobs are as horrific to black people as the holocaust to jewish people. The last lynch mob I heard of in this country was in the late '90's. They strung up and burned a black man for dating (respectfully) a white woman. It is not so distant and gone. The point is that whilst race relations have made enormous steps forward, we are not all the way there yet. A black head teacher is still fairly progressive and in a vulnerable position. It is not appropriate to make jokes about lynch mobs, it show a great lack of awareness for what people have come from and whilst some of the white middle class populace may not understand that it is hard to integrate at a higher level post and lead people when they cannot even understand who and where you are as a person. I don't think it was paranoid of mrs. Patterson to call the police. I think she knows where she comes from and where she is. Some People in east dulwich can be amazingly racist but think because they haven't used any "n" words and they haven't said whatever directly to a black person that it tows a line. People need educating and integrating - I would have thought a black head teacher was a perfect place to start. Take it as a learning curve - don't get angry and defensive about it. Learn to say "I have acted like a complete moron. I do not want my child to grow up to be a bigot like me so I will open my mind and learn what is fair, true and decent." Good luck.

No, it is about the child not the school. You can't blame a school for your child's lack of smarts. Secondary schools don't look at sat results and say "well, milly your results are rubbish but the rest of the school did well so maybe you are a genius after all." NO. Maybe if the parents of goodrich spent more time on their actual children than mud slinging through the national press then there might be some hope.

Has no one considered the possibility that the results went down because the children were not very bright? I mean the whole daily mail/lynch mob thing seems quite a thick thing to have done anyway. These are parents who can't accept that they are just not good enough to earn enough money to send their child to prep school and have to bully staff to make up for their deficit. Or maybe they know that at ?105000 per child that their child wasn't worth the investment. Also all those prep schools over in west dulwich are quite multicultural and diverse. What do you think they would have done with this poster?

The saddest thing > is, I am sure most of these white middle class > parents are university educated, so one would hope > should know better!! Well said. I love the way they keep saying its not racist - its not for you to say. Of course you can't see the offensive if it doesn't pertain to you. I would like to know what percentage of lynch mobs that harassed Charles Darwin compared to killed black people for getting out of place. Do the goodrich parents understand that lynch mobs signify what some white people would do when a black person "got out of place" by which of course I mean treated themselves as a human being. It is a very strong history. I would say you don't make jokes about lynch mobs to black people. It is highly offensive and down right rude. Yes, you can argue the poster isn't racist but why have a lynch mob when some black people's ancestors where killed by lynch mobs less than a hundred years ago. You wouldn't have concentration camp jokes, you wouldn't mock something murderous for the sake of political satire. Why all the shamelessness about working for the daily mail? I do read it on occasion to see if the legends are true and you don't have to read long to find the badly written, poorly edited, racist and offensive trash. It is the lowest of the low in terms of publications. Written by morons for morons. It is right wing, backward and stupid.
  19. I think it would have been unprofessional for the teacher to comment to the daily mail. Any other paper maybe but they were always going to give her a rough ride. The poster is awful and too questionable a choice to have been used in the context of a primary school even if it was for parents. The guy clearly has an ego problem if he thinks it was appropriate. If he was elected then surely it was his choice to work for the pta, so just do the job and don't try and turn it to a satire exercise. Magazine, student paper would be appropriate. Kids school no. I have noticed that some East dulwich residents are sometimes racist. Whether out of malice or ignorance it has been seen and heard. I wouldn't discount that there may have been events which contributed and affected the head teachers perception of events. The fact that the parents are pushy enough that this poster was made in the first instance would suggest the head is up against it. Good luck to her I say.
  20. There is the same problem in north london, in fact there are mums up and down the country who complain about the same thing. Parent and child spaces were bought in after a child got run over in a car park. Don't wait to be a parent to try and make parenting a bit safer. I appreciate people without children can be dismissive of a parent's job but trying to keep your child safe and alive is quite hard. We manage but not everyone makes it and there is nothing sadder than losing a child. Yes, overall we can parent without these spaces but considering parents are buying food for a family compared to single people buying for themselves and a lucky partner, we spend considerably more money in supermarkets and subsequently should have our needs (safety) met.
  21. I'm not convinced she is joking. East dulwich is known as an easy area to occupy.
  22. I got the p13 bus from bel air the other day, tfl said 15.10 the timetable said 15.15 I got there at 15.05 the bus got there at 15.25. I hate this bus service. If Renata or James can do the seemingly impossible and sort of this bus so it at least so it does the little it says it will then that would be impressive.
