Green food waste bags no longer free from Southwark Council

Just to say that I found a supply of caddy bags in Farmers - what a great shop it is. Wonderful selection of the most useful things always. -
Green food waste bags no longer free from Southwark Council

Having run out of the Council free bags for food recycling I have been looking in vain to buy small compostable bags to fit a kitchen caddy. Can anyone advise where they are to be found? -

Interesting piece of possibly related filming to be found at -
Saw a quantity of these tubes on Goose Green Park last weekend. Hope that Southwark Council will follow Lambeth in banning the sale

Schoolkids hold summer party. Shocking.

Had a similar caller last year, white, middled aged, dressed like a builder. Garbled story about making a lot of noise while cutting down a tree in a neighbouring garden and could he come in and see if any branches were likely to fall into our garden. Knowing that there were no trees anywhere near I refused. He looked quite exasperated and pushed off. He didn't try any of our closest neighbours so am sure it was a complete scam.

And at Oxfam you get Nectar points as well!

I'm pretty hopless at maths, but isn't a important factor in this the number of doctors on duty?

(ED Picturehouse now open)when is the cinema on LL opening?
KestonKid replied to Ole's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you hkphooey, we have no further info than we gleaned from the BECTU leaflet. Sooon realised that everyone was so excited about the cinema opening that there was little or no interest in discussing the staff conditions. At least there is a trade union to hand for them. Can certainly recommend taking out membership. It does pay off quite quickly. Just waiting now for something we want to see. -
(ED Picturehouse now open)when is the cinema on LL opening?
KestonKid replied to Ole's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As members of the Brixton Ritzy we are delighted at the opening of the East Dulwich Cinema within walking distance. However, passing the cinema yesterday my wife picked up a leaflet from a member of BECTU who was demonstrating for the right to unionise the workforce of what is a very large international and highly profitable organisation. BECTU had a successful campaign at Brixton and won a 26% payrise for the staff there. Perhaps this would be a good time for the patrons of the new cinema to ask about the conditiona in the ED cinema, ie right to unionise, are they on zero hours contracts, do they get the London Living Wage etc? -
Such a friendly crowd at Horniman's yesterday!

Much looking forward to returning to the excellent cafe and stuffing myself... -
We had some cracking at the front of the house. We called in our insurance company who, after a year's worth of test pits, attributed it to the roots of the council's flowering cherry tree on the pavement outside. The cracks were then repaired, without any need for underpinning, and the rooms redecorated. After paying up, the inurance company then recovered the greater part of their costs from the council. Job done. But after that we found it difficult to insure our house. We eventually managed it, albeit with a policy costing twice as much as before. So you win some, you lose some....

Three sparrows came and had a hearty breakfast this morning! Wonder if Nature arranges a gathering of different flocks to widen the gene pool? Very happy to see them back, especially on such a dreich morning.

As the original poster I have been grateful for the friendly messages. No sign yet of 'our' sparrows but have seen a wren several times and today a blackbird! Like the idea of a nesting box to try to attract them back. Will look into this.

For years we have had daily visits from a flock of sparrows but haven't seen or heard them for about ten days. They flew about round various gardens near Goose Green/Adys Road/Keston Road. As far as we can tell nothing has changed in the habitat. They coped with various cats and even a sparrowhawk. Would love to hear that they have just moved in safely somewhere nearby. Meanwhile we are keeping the feeders topped-up and putting out fresh water.

foreign visitors - medical help

My sister visiting from Australia went to the (private) Guthrie clinic at Kings College Hospital to have a check on her Warfarin level. They were helpful and not expensive. -
I do so sympathise with you. We have a similar problem with next door neighbours who live in two flats sharing the bins. I contacted the council to get leaflets, caddies and green bags delivered but they were left unused on the doorstep. They constantly put things in the wrong bins, dare not think where they put the food rubbish (there must be something surely?) I have in the past sneaked round when they were out and sorted out the mess even washing the stinking bin to the great amusement of my other neighbours who thought I was going to provide a general service. Perhaps the binmen could put a card through the door of such households explaining why the bins are not being cleared

Olley's Fish Experience of Herne Hill do gluten-free food on Mondays and Tuesdays, and they also sell gluten-free beer (result!).

Fed up with snails and slugs invading the bird-seed feeders hanging in the hedge, I hung one feeder on the washing line in the open. Sparrows soon found it and have had a couple of happy days until now, when out of nowhere, a female sparrow-hawk swooped down. Don't think she caught anything. Realise now that what I caught a glimse of earlier, and thought was a jay, may have been her mate. Have now moved the feeder back to a more sheltered spot.

It's a wonderful amenity - let people use it how they will!
