"To Muriel and I, the pub that stands at the northernmost point of the Rye is better known as the Morning Star, which it was called until the turn of the century. No-one seems to know for sure, but one struggles to escape the conclusion that its name was changed to The Nags Head in order to cash in on the success of The TV Show That Must Not be Mentioned." My old man (and to some extent me) used to have a good mate, a Peckham native called Brian, who unfortunately is no longer of this world having pickled himself on Smirnoff blue/black for years. Anyway, he was a regular of the Morning Star, and it was proper old skool, one of those pubs with old piss pots on shelves as decoration. As far as I know it became The Nag's Head simply because the bloke that took it over was obsessed with OF&H. At one point it even contained a yellow Reliant Robin.

As a wayward teen I'd often be sat at the bus stop opposite King's on the Rye in the early hours of the morning, and the grass area behind the bus stop would always be covered in BMWs. I never got to see the inside of the club, but did have some interesting conversations at the bus stop. One guy asked to see my rings, and decided I could keep them as they were only silver. He then gave me a massive spliff to take home.

There are several reasons that I'd be reluctant to live above a takeaway, but risk of fire would be pretty low down the list. How often do you think these places catch fire? I'd be more concerned about how they dealt with their waste, and what sort of pests it attraced. NOTE: Not a comment on Maxim, just remember a guy I knew living above a kebab shop in Peckham, and seeing some big rats in his kitchen.

Some really good times, I'd be up for one if enough people signed up.

United Vs Spurs looks to be the pick on opening day. Liverpool have Stoke, which could be a tricky start.

Believe it or not, that's the second version (hence the "remains the same" bit.

It's just that when you say "tower block", I think of this Or similar. That one is in Stratford by the way. I've done home visits in there, amazing views. -

Again, can you define "tower blocks" please? How tall? -

So how tall are the buildings you fear? When it comes to Southwark and housing I have absolutely no faith that they will do anything but line the pockets of developers, but I still think talk of "tower blocks" in ED is just silly. -

Golden Lion is a lovely pub, which seems to do pretty well. Really really hope they are nowhere near the place!

Never even heard of it, what's it about?

Because we desperately need more housing and should let nimby nonsense stop it perhaps? Seriously, where exactly does anyone think a tower block COULD be built in dulwich? -
Although I'd say both Fortitude and Walking Dead are at the top of my second tier, not quite top tier with the HBO Classics. Although... SPOILER ALERT, STOP READING NOW IF YOU'RE NOT UP TO DATE WITH GoT... Was it really bloody necessary to have a child burnt at the stake last week in a scene which does not happen in the books (and if the author puts it in a future book then he's just become a puppet to a TV Show), was not required for the p[lot, and has now totally ruined a character that was becoming popular? Gratuitous shit.

The Walking Dead - If anyone has yet to have a look, especially if they're thinking "zombies are not my thing", then I recommend you try. Zombies really aren't my thing except for Shaun of the Dead, and the awesome Zombieland, but they're more piss takes. However, I decided recently to give TWD a try, and ended up doing 5 seasons in about a month. Very gripping stuff. Most episodes are good, with only the odd one where nothing much seems to go on. It's not constant zombie zombie zombie, it's about a group of people trying to get on, and trying to survive. It's about trying to cling on to whatever it is that makes us human, even when everything we know has gone to shit. I like it a lot.

Been watching Fortitude (2 episodes away from the end of season 1 - Season 2 has been comissioned). After being a bit unsure at the end of episodes 1 & 2 (double episode), I may well have not bothered, but the wife liked it a lot so we pushed on. Glad we did, it's very good. Unique location (set in northern most Norwegian island, but I think largely filmed in Iceland), good cast, and with 2 episodes yet, I have yet to work it out (I have theories, but not sure, and usually I'm pretty good at guessing these thigs). Would recommend. Only 12 45 minute episodes, so not too much of a commitment.

The owners, simple as that. When it first became "The Vale" in the early 000's, it was the only late license in the area, and many a good night was had. But quite quickly the owner started looking at himself as some sort of "Guv'na", standing on the door in his long coat, flanked by bouncers, like some sort of latter day Kray (but he couldn't carry it off). Soon fights were starting regularly and it occasionally got nasty. Soon numbers dwindled and it was pretty empty. Since then, over the years they have brought in various new managers, all of whom start so enthusiastically, engaging with people, trying to get interesting chefs and events on. But every single time they leave within a month or so, having been unable to work with the owners. It's crying out to be successful in some form or other, but over the years they have doggedly refused to allow it. Good riddance, I hope they have gotten out of the pub game, or some other pub somewhere is in for a rough ride.

I don't think it's fair to call First Mate narrow minded, but I do have to agree with the rest of that post. -
Yuck, what a freak. Glad you're okay.

And that I'm a West Indian mother, so I want what's best for my son... Don't we all love.

Yeah that was a bit of an odd decision. Never saw the match, will catch the goals later, but everyone is saying it was a corker.
