Only wanted a friendly dig at StraferJack, but the OP of the thread took it a bit personally.
  2. alice32 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- I remember one father accusing my son of 'attacking' his daughter, which was possibly a bit harsh considering he was only about 18 months at the time! Anyone who thinks that an 18 month old is capable of "attacking" another child, is a moron, who shouldn't be allowed to have kids of their own quite frankly.
  3. Any of Marina Lewycka's books.
  4. There is probably a software upgrade option somewhere in the phones settings.
  5. I wish ladies would ask more. I usually have headphones in, and my head in a book or looking at phone, so I am oblivious to what is happening around me. I am always more than happy to get up if I get a tap on the shoulder.
  6. Well yes, on that I totally agree. Even of he wasn't happy with you speaking to his daughter, he should never have sworn at you, but rather said "sorry she sprayed your baby, but I'll deal with it".
  7. I take your point, but I guess the whole problem with this is that we are talking about each individual's own children. I can see the value in doing things both ways, but unless you know a parent is from the same school of thought as you, you always run the risk of upsetting a stranger, and possibly getting a piece if their mind, if they have an aggressive disposition. At the end of the day, I just can't believe a little girl actually thought to herself "that woman just glared at me, I'll show hee, I'll aim right at the small baby's head, because that will do the most damage".
  8. She was Borg (full name 7of9). And yes, she was fit!
  9. Er, is it? I don't think that's the same thing. Fuschia may have preferred to have spoken to the parent, but as he wasn't about, she took it on her self to speak to the child. When I said I meant that they could have a word if she was about to hurt herself, or was kicking the back of their chair, or if she was about to hit another kid. If she had actually done something bad, I absolutely expect someone to come to me or my wife. If we are "not present" (we'd never be very far from her) I still don't accept that as license for them to do the telling off. I am not suggesting that Fuschia acted "inappropriately", I am simply trying to explain to you why some people may not appreciate her behaviour in this sort of circumstance. That in no way justifies the man swearing at her, but that is beside the point quite frankly.
  10. What I mean by that is that speaking to other people's children is a difficult one, because it has to work both ways, which means in theory, your kids could be good off by someone with a very different parenting style to you. I think I am happy for someone to say "don't do that darling" to my daughter, but if they feel she needs a telling off, I'd want them to speak to me, so I could so it my way. And I know it's not always possible to speak to a parent, before anyone point out that the dad in this incident wasn't obvious when looked for.
  11. Exactly, how would people feel if this sort of scary, aggressive bloke felt the need to have words with their children in public?
  12. Fuschia Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No he wasn't joking Fair enough, just came across as something I would've found funny, if said in the right manner.
  13. I never said this yesterday, but SW's above post has set me off. Whilst the Family Room is very useful, and often interesting, there are a couple of posters who like to share everything on here, safe in the knowledge that they'll get agreement and sympathy from their pals. That is absolutely fine, but don't word it like you're interested in other opinions, if anything opposing your view is going to be dismissed out of hand. I have no beef with Fuschia, and the bloke in this situation was obviously over aggressive. However, the parental protective instinct is so strong, and can make adults act quite out of character. Also, it's fine to believe that our kids should be raised by society, I'd subscribe to that, but equally, I need to respect that the next man it woman on the street may not share that view, and appreciate me having words with their child. New mother calling ANY child of that age "a nasty piece of work" is just plain weird! Finally, SW I don't like the tone of your post everything I've said on here has been polite. Edit for typos
  14. LaddyMuck, we've done plenty of digging thanks, but an 8 month pregnant wife, and a lively 2 year old don't always make it easy, so on this occasion we're cheating, and proud of it! I'll be there with my spade this evening though. Sophie, thanks for the link, and you're not too late, we won't actually be doing anything for a while.
  15. I would have said they're only 8 and 3, and you've got a seat now . Are you sure he wasn't just joking with you though?
  16. Do you think he ever actually motivated ANYONE?
  17. Perhaps you could've looked up startled, then upon realising it was a child, said something about being a bit careful. Then the follow up spray may never have happened. Just a thought, because I thought you wanted people's thoughts on this type of situation.
  18. Thanks, called old Kent Road, and they have them for about ?37 a day.
  19. Fair enough, I wasn't suggesting you'd been aggressive to the kid, was just making the point that my reaction would depend on the circumstances. If I'd been the man in this case, I'd have asked you what happened, then told the daughter not to spray people.
  20. Couldn't agree more! Not so sure about that, being as we don't know what was said, and how strongly Fuschia told her off. I'd have no problem at all with someone telling my daughter that she was doing something wrong. If, however, I felt they were really having a go, and upsetting her (having not approached me), I'd tell them where to go quite frankly.
  21. It churns up earth. It's needed on the wife's bloody allotment.
  22. Need one for a day or 2, and internet not much use. Does anyone know where I can hire one, and roughly what it could cost?
  23. To be honest, I kind of agree with curmudgeon, and I certainly don't think there was anything rude about their post. If I'd been squirted the first time, I think I'd have moved away a bit, and maybe said "be careful sweetheart" (with a friendly smile) rather than making my first move a glare.
  24. Doesn't the very mention of the word "squat" raise memories of eating pop tarts at 4am with blokes called things like Pickles, who are surrounded in myth. Happy Daze
