  1. When you post in the wrong thread...
  2. @otta. Further up east ham high st north is Ruskin Arms. A proper rock pub with regular gigs. Lots of big bands state of there. Quo played there for some reason when I was there as well
  3. It's worth noting as well that mrben is no bleeding heart liberal Woe betide anyone who suggests his entrepreneurial efforts don't deserve their dues. So as canaries in coal mines go, his op is significant There is much I agree with in Jeremy/daver and other posts as well. I don't think anyone is "the bad guy" in the debate. But there is, to my mind, a whiff of 2007 about some of this. "Anyone smell anything wrong?" "Nope full speed ahead and don't be listening to naysayers"
  4. Last time I went to east ham was maybe a year ago. Didn't look any better to me. Busy high st. Precious few places to go of an evening
  5. Historically making do is what you do in mid range jobs If making do wasn't enough you became a professional and "got on" I think what mrben is saying is that it's getting a but weird when well paid professionals have to "make do". For the sale of a decade. People buying here 10-15 years ago weren't just making do, they were taking an educated punt (which paid off) Suggesting people try same in eltham isn't same thing at all I totally get that it's how it is. And at the moment there are enough people lucky enough to be able to support buyers in the area (parents helping out etc) I don't think anyone is suggesting a revolution. But mrbens point is a point worth noting. Saying "'twas ever thus" isn't quite true and others saying move to eltham is something else again
  6. I live there for 4 years and thought about buying a house there then (1998). If I thought long term I would have had a very dull 15 years in london
  7. Yeah I'm pro renting but with some sort of controls. Renting as exists in this country requires too much luck and insecurity
  8. Relatively speaking boring obviously. I love manhattan
  9. Don't make memo back to east ham jeremey - please, I beg you But saying what is going to happen isn't the same as saying something is wrong But your speculative points all sound plausible. I suspect London will become more affluent and boring (just as Manhattan has over the last couple of decades)
  10. Boiled down, yes Jeremy. Or close to it anyway
  11. I will be as happy as anyone if we win a trophy. But supporting a team isn't all about winning trophies
  12. If we do buy him we know he is trouble an can be reasonably sure he will want away within 2 years. Not keen at all
  13. And even if you manage to get a place, where is your path upwards? There isn't one, even if you forego beer, socializing, living in london generally, and just save. You aren't going to be able to afford a step up
  14. Links to propert for that salary in those areas?
  15. If arsenal are serious and if they do land him, I wouldn't call it a decent purchase
  16. "A lot more affordable" has a hint of "I could easily downsize" Try earning a decent salary in london, and you are early 30s. Should be thinking of setting up a base. Say 30ish k. Where exactly is affordable?
  17. I think it's arsenal pretending to be serious for him, knowing he wouldn't go there. But it shows other clubs and fans they have money and are looking to spend it, maybe sniffing out other players
  18. It?s one of the most heated discussions I can recall amongst Arsenal fans. Those of us who suggest we don?t want someone of his character at the club are shouted at for lacking ambition. You just know those same people were at front of the Q condemning him when he played for Liverpool I don?t think he will sign for Arsenal, and I hope he doesn?t
  19. John K What are we missing?
  20. zeban Have you seen threads on this subject in the past? The front and area of that station is/was pretty stunning The dark alleys created by the shops out front are horrible and them being smelly isn't an opionion The businesses themselves don't offer anything different to the 20 bazillion other shops along Rye Lane I like Rye Lane and go there often, but to suggest there isn nothing wrong with the station and things couldn't be improved is a bit harsh
  21. On the vague subject of Indian restaurant staff, I was mildly surprised to learn that Dita at Tandoori Nights has transferred to the Fulham branch She was outside LL last week and I mentioned I hadn't seen her for a while (mostly because I haven't been there for a long time) when she said. Feels like end of an era...
  22. UncleBen - you'll have to mark me down as a non-fan, but you will survive I'm sure. But on this thread I have tried to seperate the post from the poster. It's probably true that people are loading their judgement of your post based on their already formed impressions of you This may not be fair but it' surely a reason for pause for thought as well I don't think anyone should be accusing you of outright racism without backing it up and I would support your defence in that particular matter But with regards to the joke itself, I'm finding it odd that people think it's just a bad joke/juvenile and couldn't be misinterpreted I've thrown it out to people I know (not just friends, or a narrow base of people), who have no clue about the EDF or who/what an UncleBen might be - and I would say it's been pretty unanimous that people think it's not just unfunny/juvenile but whiffy I think it's the combination of illegal/curry house/tampering with the food and nothing to do with underpants/juvenile elements
  23. Kalamity, I'd agree. That does seem an accusation too far and isn't backed up with anything As for the joke itself, I'm half tempted to throw it (without reference to the forum or who wrote it) onto social networks and see what sort of responses it gets and who from
  24. Exactly So why would anyone ever suggest it would happen?
  25. Not sure what your point is them If you wouldn't be comfortable with it, what would the reason be?
