Streetcar is marvellous - though some of the cars cleaner than others - hurrah for Friern Road - boo hiss to Mulberry Court -
DV do have a siblings policy They have 50% chirch and 50% non church places Places are allocated in distance from the school (after siblings and olooked after children, special medical requirements etc) There's more to the church places than I've described ... I think you can find the info on their website.

bawdy-nan replied to ClareC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Its out of ED but this has to be on eof the most extraordinarily downbeat bits of marketing I've ever encountered - "see, see the lovely views" -

wow - sounds like you've turned up a big demand locally... Haven't popped in with my various bike niggles yet but was planning to .... when do you think you might be opening up for gear based clanking problem solving?

I like the Herne. Don't go there much but have had a lovely time when I do. Might be that I've mostly gone earlyish on a sauturday lunchtime. I've found the menu imaginative and mostlye delicious. Sometimes the service has been a little slow but not so I'd get steam coming out of my ears. It does seem that slow service has been a problem and the manager's excuse makes sense but doesn't really address the problem. I can see how and why things might get a bit out of hand but you can usually solve bad feeling by letting people know how long they might have to wait and surprising them with a small bit of something delicious to keep them going - could be as simple as some lovely bread and a decent olive oil - or some other small lovleliness

Strange man near the Peckham Rye Cafe / One o'clock club
bawdy-nan replied to jimbo1964's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was in a similar situation recently - at the playpark at goose green with 2 small kids. I noticed a man, who appeared to be on his own, filming children in, what seemed to be a quite surreptitious way. I was a bit troubled by this but thought the best thing to do was to stride over and ask him what he was doing - politely. I did and he was with some friends and their kids filmingthem. Perfectly satisfactory answer and I felt a bit embarassed but it felt like the right thing to do. At the same time as being a concerned parent, I am also worried by the growing challenge to our rights to take photographs in public places. It seems to me that in most situations talking to people helps - challenging the wierdos and meeting the people doing interesting video / photography projects... -
Yes - it was like that on Friday. Also noticed today that the police station on LL has finally closed down - notice on the door suggesting you use a phone to speak to the police or dial 999 in an emergency. Seemed to be lots of uniformed bods around though...

It seems to me that the thread has brought out lots of the really big problems around this issue. The "3 day" "training", the mixing up of terms, the idea that its a "therapy" that can "give you a bit of a lift" when poor advice can have dire medical effects. A light google of "nutritional therapists" will bring charlatans to the surface like bubbles in a glass of fizzy water. On the other hand, Monica's spirited defence and evident care, passion and committment to enhanced study lead me to revise my original, deeply sceptical opnions a little. I would feel happy taking advice from Monica, at least. I think that if BANT and the new register want to be taken seriously they really should apply some rigour to the process of registration and expect that they are likely to lose a lot of under qualified and dangerous quacks and moountebanks from their ranks.

True - the staff are very friendly and helpful - I'm just annoyed by the blatent rip-off

lloyds pharmacy took over the chemists on ncross road and prices have shot up. I went to renew my stocks of non-branded hay fever tablets to discover that I was buying the last proper non-branded pack available. There will now oh be "lloyds" branded medicines to buy aside from the normal clarityn type of branded medicines. This will mean the price will almost double from 3.99 to 6.99. Apparently this will be the case across all of the over the counter medicines. Boo hiss.

The Lambeth country show is my all time favourite event since I moved to London 14 years ago - i love theridiculous chutzpah of it - it remidns me of all the ages and stages I;ve been in my south london sojourn I have loved the displays of wheat and potatoes with labels in case yo don't know the alternative morris dancing - indian folk (the connection being handkercheif waving) glorious launch of lambeth sure start - tent with big dungareed lady leading a rousing version of she'll be coming round the maountain the big piles of sheepskins and children gone giddy rolling in them and, always, the owls hurrah for it

I think they are wonderful too. You can see them from the playground in Dulwich PArk and thy look like a fairytale castle. I think they work so well because they are perfectly placed - they occupy the higher ground and go higher.

Hi Monica I'm aware of the BANT registration process with CNCH as I understand it. I'm not entirely convinced by the process (though obviously, its still being developed): voluntary registration along criteria decided by the nutritional therapists, a code of ethics unavailable for public view and a set of practice criteria (not sure if this is the right phrasing) lifted from the dieticians. I;m not convonced it will be rigorously enforced (there seems to be quite a lot of wobble room) and in any case there's no "striking someone off" when a register is voluntary. Trying to decipher just what the letters after the name mean is very very tricky (in all cases). I have come across some very sane seeming, thoroughly careful and seemingly well-trained people who are nutritional therapists and I absolutely acknowledge that some of the training available can be very thorough. These are the ones who would not stray outside their spheres of knowledge or expertise. I think the very big problem is that anyone can call themselves a nutritionist or nutritional therapist. I have also come across a number of cases where the health advice given out by NT's has been downright dangerous, utterly unscientific. I'm not a total CM refusnik and do, I think, have an open mind and have used arange of "alternative therapies". I just bristle at some of the claims made by this particular group and at the exploitation of people at their most vulnerable. Best wishes BN

Co-op are trying to buy them up...

Don't we have to go through 2 successive quarters of decline before its official?

Watch out: nutritionists are different to nutritional therapists different again to dieticians dieticians have a lot of training and are regulated within the medical profession nutritionists tend to work in an education capacity and have a voluntary register which requires a degree of proper training (involving at least some science) it can be checked here. they are not regulated nutritional therapists are the ones who reckon they can cure conditions like MS and can set themselves up after a short correspondence course. They are unregulated and one of them recently had to pay out ?810000 to a woman left with brain damage after following her instructions to drink lots of water, even when she was fitting as a result of excessive intake of water. In my opnion its total bunkum and they often prey on people's vulnerabilities, using pseudo-scientific jargon based on no evidence. Of course, people will say they have had an effect and improved their life /condition. I don't doubt their sincerity but I would say that these people are often ill-qulaified to offer medical advice and can do harm unlike some of the other "alternative" therapies. I have been asked to amend my post. I don't know the person recommended and know of no reason why she should be avoided in particular. EDITED: to remove link to named nutritional therapist, I absolutely stand by my comments on nutritional therapists. They are unregulated and do not have to be medically trained to practice. I would say absolutely beware. It is of course true that regulated practitioners, like GPs, can also be guilty of malpractice, the difference is when they are they are not allowed to continue practising. As I said I don't doubt that some people will genuinely feel they have benefitted from their services. In my opnion, and I accept this may not be the opinion of everyone, its snake-oil. I'd suggest that if someone has a problem that they suspect might be nutritional they should first see their GP.

What is East Dulwich Missing - Food Wise
bawdy-nan replied to SweetShopDan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
looks like we may well be getting a co-op if the soimerfield takeover goes ahead - looking likely I think. Steak house wouldn't do it for me - I'd love a proper italian - like buena sera in CLapham junction. Friendly, proper pizzas, fnacy if you fancy it - cheapo if you don't ... kids in the daytime, grown-ups in the evening - relaxed and delicious. The anit-thesis of poncey. -
isn't this about the Barry road development proposal? In the thread someone talks about how the development goes right up to the join with the pavement and will therefore likely mean the removal of mature trees on the pavement. If this is the case then I simply don't understand j russel's points. The proposed development isn't affordable housing and doesn't address the unmet need for family size affordable housing (which I think might be a planning issue in any case). There are far more interesting ways of using up space and nooks and crannies and being creatively high density.

Harris Academy for boys on Peckham Rye approved
bawdy-nan replied to Dr De Soto's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There's also the question of whether the Harris Academies are best placed to deliver education. The Academy at Peckham is on eth list of schools threatened with being turned into academies because they are underperforming. -

Whenever I've had anything from them that has been less than lovely I've mentioned it to Chris (who keeps an eagle eye on whats being sold when he's there and won't let anything wilty leave in a brown paper bag). I've always had an apology and a replacement. It happens to me very very rarely and we shop there every week.
