That made me laugh out loud! I've always been averse to poo - never minded vomit particularly, but poo has always presented a bit of a problem. Luckily I'm from oop north and DH is from daan sarf so we worked it that way when ever poss!

Any recommendations for first shoes? 10 months +

Spot on - cruising is when they walk around furniture hold on to 'anything' for support. Unless your little man has very wide or very narrow feet (in which case Startrite shoes may be a better bet), then you can't really go wrong with Clarks - John Barnet's have a sale on a the moment and they did seem to have a reasonable range of 'cruisers'. As an ex-Clarks children's fitter (many many moons ago), I have to say I don't find John Barnet's or Biff particularly good/consistent at fitting shoes well - your best bet is to go to an actual clarks shop, you're guaranteed the fitters are well trained and not just out to meet their sale's targets..... There is a Clarks warehouse shop on Rye Lane (a couple of doors up from Primark), the staff are trained and the kids shoes are at least half the price of 'normal' clarks shops. -
Questions regarding nursery place at local school

chantelle Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >Is it a big deal if they go straight into reception? Personally I don't think it is a big deal - I think given the shortage of school nursery places in SE22 (I live on Jennings and my daughter didn't get into Heber nursery, I live literally opposite the nursery entrance gate, no-one can live closer! However, allocation for September was ALL siblings), many children will go into reception class from some other type of childcare - nanny/childminder/private nursery/parental care, in fact I'd even make a guess that most kids entering reception haven't previously attended a school nursery. x -
Emergency childcare - does it exist?
kristymac1 replied to jac428's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think there are nanny agengies which offer emergency childcare - not sure of contact details, but I'm sure someone on here must have used a similar service? -
Schonrock kids and unchaperoned "school run"

Now who's hysterical?? I wasn't referring to the risk of child abductors, I was referring to the risk associated with the inevitable heightened media attention along that route (for the next 24 hours anyway - after that no doubt the 'hysteria' will have moved along). Last week the kids only had to manage one road with a lollypop man, today they'll face a slalem of photographers. david_carnell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > kristymac1 Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Great, so the precise route that these > little'uns > > take to school unaccompanied is now national > news > > - doesn't that put the children at even more > risk? > > Yes....yes it does. Great, so the precise route that these little'uns take to school unaccompanied is now national news - doesn't that put the children at even more risk? -
New photos on wall in North Cross Road
kristymac1 replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I like them too - particularly the images of the junction of NCR and Lordship Lane in the 40's - looking at the photo and then turning to look down the street really transproted me back a time. -

Personally I think 8 and 5 is too young - I have nephews of that age and couldn't imagine tham paying enough attention or being responsible/mature enough to manage the journey on their own - I can accept that its probably a lot to do with the individual child/children but for me that would be too young. The article mentions that they are picked up by either a parent or the nanny - it's hard to imagine why one of them couldn't cycle with them in the morning as well? -
Found one in the gutter on Whately Road, placed it on the windowsill of the electric/building (?) unit on the corner with Crystal Palace Road. He looked well loved, hope he's found his way home......

Questions regarding nursery place at local school
kristymac1 replied to busymum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hiya, If you were able to split the hours between school and private nursery - you wouldn't be able to split the free 15 hours allowance between the 2 - that's because you'd be taking up a full 15 hours allocation at the school nursery (whether you use it or not). I really don't want to sound too critical but I think it would be pretty unfair on others who haven't been able to secure a 5 session place at a school nursery if it was possible for others to take up those places but not make full use of them. There's a distinct shortage of nursery places in this area, and to take up more places than you can possibly use seems a bit selfish - that's a general comment, not directed at you busymum as I don't think that's what you're suggesting. Good luck, however it works out x -
Saw it on Monday and I really like it - my daughter's 3 and she stared at it for a while, pretty puzzled but no nightmares....

I have to say I find the whole debate around b/f fairly tedious with the same the arguments churned out time after time there's no way new(ish) parents wouldn't have been advised of the benefits of b/f their new borns/little ones but there are many reasons why a mother may choose (or not even have the luxury of choice) not to breastfeed and there's no reason at all why she should have to explain/justify that reason to anyone. I b/f my daughter up to 8 months, after which time she weened herself off the breast onto bottle - however I prepared her for bottle feeding from day one because of a medical condition I had. I have many friends who b/f and many friends who formula fed, never once have I thought it was relevant (or appropriate) for me to ask why they made that decision. Oh and: ClareC Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Stay in the family room, its always > good to hear from you I totally agree!

Smiler Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Watch out re. contraception, unless you're keen > for another, any natural contraception from > breastfeeding diminishes really fast! On this note - its worth pointing out that b/f doesn't necessarily give you protection against conception - scarey but true!

Settling in at nursery - advice needed!
kristymac1 replied to charlottep's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter is due to start at nursery in a couple of weeks time - she too is used to being with a childminder for 3-days a week for 2 years now (crikey!). The settling in process is much more involved at the new nursery, 2hrs the first day (while I stay with her), 3hrs the next, 4 the next etc until she eventually does the full day with them - there is also complete flexibility to change that/extend it if that's what is required. I'm really nervous about it and will probably fair much worse than my daughter (silly isn't it?). I also put a post on the forum to meet up with any mums and their little ones who already go to the nursery so my daughter would recognise a friendly face when she went - we met with a lovely mum and her daughter and I feel much more confident that the settling in will be easier because of that - perhaps you could do the same? Good luck x -
If you don't want to drive, the number 37 bus will drop you right outside the lido on Dulwich Road - you can catch it from opposite Goose Green or various stops along East Dulwich Grove - 10min journey if you go after the school runs are finished.

Practical advice wanted: how to child-proof my house??
kristymac1 replied to MrsMc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I worked on the basis that I would baby-proof areas which could do serious harm - ie undersink cupboards with cleaning products etc, stair gates to prevent climbing/falling down and up the stairs, plug sockets which were accessible to wet/sticky fingers. Everything else - including table corners and door hinges I tried as best I could to keep an eye on things and explain/yell 'n' grab when things looked precarious. I have to say it seems to have worked reasonably well, not too many accidents (certainly nothing dangerous) and my daughter now has a healthy respect for cupboards when we go to friends houses..... -
Hi C, I'm really sorry you're going through this - its obviously on your mind the whole time. I wonder whether having the appraisal would actually be a 'good' thing anyway (as good as it can be in these circumstances). If the appraisal is conducted properly then any concerns (from both sides) will have to be raised and dealt with using the proper process - including being written down and being signed/agreed by both sides. If you opt for an 'average' rating then I fear you are giving your employers an opportunity to avoid transparency. If you are uncomfortable with the appraisal process given what has been said (and you have every reasonable right to be), you could write down your concerns and request that you are accompanied by a person of support who could be a friend or representative during the appraisal. If you need a coffee/rant I'm around tomorrow xx

Dulwich Medical Centre - Late patient policy
kristymac1 replied to mexicanMike's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
DMC is one of the better GP surgeries I've encountered, I find their reception staff (mostly) very efficient and polite and the doctors (mostly!) are very good - there are one or two that I am able to avoid, all of the others I have seen have been excellent. As for late policies, just before Christmas I had 9am appointment and ended up being 30 minutes late, I explained the situation - a lady had gone into labour literally on me in the street and I took her into a house and waited until the ambulance arrived - there was no question about me not being seen by the doctor (even though the situation seemed fairly far-fetched). I am very happy with the service they provide and can imagine they deal with a number of a**holes on a daily basis....... -
To all medical people - advice please?
kristymac1 replied to kristymac1's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hiya, Thanks to everyone for all helpful comments/advice. We did go back to the gps today and were given a different antibiotic which tastes very milky so easier to hide in milk based drinks - saying that 3yr olds are smart and she is now very suspicious of any drink we give her, but is asking for water a lot - she NEVER asks for water, obviously she knows its the one drink we can't spike! Hey ho she's had some ab today, and I figure some is better than none and will hopefully be enough to keep her out of hospital - confirmed that if she doesn't take any abs, she will need a stint in hospital on IV. Many thanks again xx -

She was prepped for IV antibiotics at the hospital yesterday. I'm going to call to see the GP again today so will ask her again - she's a new doctor down at DMC (or at least newish - I haven't seen/heard of her before) and she was lovely, excellent with my daughter and me and very thorough in her examination - hopefully she's on again today. btw, we seem to be having some success with mango smoothie as a mask for the antibiotics - not sure how long that will last though.... -

Also, very interesting that nicolemodesti was prescribed them for her little one (my daughter is 3 so age shouldn't be a problem) Isn't this Forum and all who sail in her just great?! -

Thanks Ryedalema, I may well take you up on that offer of employing nurse C if things don't go so well tonight... Fingers crossed though, our fridge is currently full of various types of liquid from chocolate milk to mango smoothie all laced with doses of antibiotic (to which M has literally turned her nose up to) And SteveT - ice cream is a good idea and her favourite, but alas she turned that down flat too (could have been because that too was 'hiding' illicit substances..) My next question, to myself probably as a research chemist (in a past life at least) is 'Why the hell can't they make antibiotics that taste nice?' - can't be that hard surely??? x -

kristymac1 replied to kristymac1's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks Buggie - that is really helpful. We have tried ALL ways to get medicine into her and none of it works, it is especially difficult at the moment because her throat is so sore (it was actually closed over this morning and the whole of the roof of her mouth was/is ulcerated to the extent that she can't swallow saliva. Her fluid intake is definitely down but we are trying to get as much into her (laced with antibiotics) about 30mins after the paracetamol which is the only time she seems willing to swallow anything. I will definitely take her back to ED if she is in the same distress as last night. They did prep her at the hospital for IV fluids and antibiotics but after some paracetamol she drank some juice and we were told we could take her home - I wasn't going to hang around, much prefering to have her at home than at hospital - in hindsight it may not have been the best idea..... Thanks again
