  1. But if that price is lowering educational achievement for the most disadvantaged doesn't that undermine the whole point of the principle in the first place?
  2. He's been sold to Man U
  3. Read Wikinomics Allfornun
  4. Aside from the arguments about personal freedom, in principle, James and CED are right, in reality you could argue that that would further exacerbate house prices in posher areas and increase ghettoisation between the majority and the poorest. It looks though like most of us are in agreement on some form of streaming based on ability should be applied to education...the Grammar school system, of course, failed lots of people, but I think the argument is that educational achievement among the poorest have slipped dramatically in recent years as the delayed effect of the mass social engineering that was Comprehensive Education has come through
  5. All my Essex mates who bought their replica Hammers' shirts.....the only Football shirt to have it's average wearers size on the outside!!! (can I please point out I am a thin Hammer)
  6. er..... there's now many more public school kids going to universities too fairy - it's the expansion in both the population but also the massive increase in Higher Education since the 11+ heyday (50%+ now go to..er, 'university' compared to less than 10% 20+ years ago) the point is that proportionally those in the lower 10th income household make up less of a share of students than they used to...and , even according to the goverment figures, social mobility has decreased.
  7. Universities have a lower number of entrants from working class backgrounds, Oxbridge ditto and social mobility is now actually falling........crappy old elitist Grammar schools eh...
  8. So SimonM - we now have a system where many comprehensives (especially in deprived areas) have become as bad academically as the old Secondary Moderns and far more dangerous! So rather than 20% getting an 'elite' education it's a far lower share and largely determined by money (private education / moving to expensive areas with different schools) and for bright working class kids in deprived areas that has been a disaster and is a disaster for us all in terms of social mobility, equal opportunity, etc...the music and drugs may have been good but the 60s didn't half foook up lots in our country...
  9. Seperate schools by race...great idea (not) sounds just like South Africa circa 1960-1990 Seperate schools by gender - females better than males is at an average, straeming would sort out all of the problems disruption, etc associated with this but Streaming far too nasty and competitive and capitalist...Good old lowest common denominator lefties... When we had a pretty good streaming system (ie Grammar Schools) bright working class kids were suceeding en masse, the decline in working class achievement in schools started not long after the introduction of comprehensive Education...this is a major factor in the reverse of social mobility that has been happening for over 10 years....so stick that in yer 'class war' pipe and smoke it Harriet.... Private education was also on a terminal path downwards until Comprehensives....social enginnering, I spit on it
  10. Well maybe Inde - but I moved here at the peak with quite a lot of equity. Now, If i'd have had hindsight, I could have stuck my money in the bank, rented a house like I have (just on the interest payments), had all my salary as spare money to spend or save, not paid a few 10s of thousands in stamp duty/solicitors fees and then bought a house now for ?50K less. and maybe ?100k less in a year. All in all, and with the benefit of hindsight, I'd be about ?100k better off!I could live with being a renter for two years or so for that! Still, If i'd known who'd win the Derby and Grand Nationl every year I'd be a millionairre!
