  1. Amen to that. There are many things I love about the US, but the bread isn't one of them!

  5. As I said earlier tho first mate - it's not the villian that causes the most damage. Or even if it is, his behaviour is already "broken" and isn't changing and still needs catching. But it's the normal "law-abiding" citizen who is killing/damaging more people on the roads - changing their behaviour is achievable because... well.. they are law-abiding, right?

  7. I chuckled loudly yesterday when I read this from Marina Hyde about her encounter with Big Sam "That said, there was a Football Writers' one a couple of years back at which I was treated to a lively Sam Allardyce explaining why a woman could know precisely nothing about cricket ? and with his good self not merely unable to recall the name of Muttiah Muralitharan in the course of one peroration, but apparently under the impression that Shane Warne bowled off-spin. As I filled in some of the gaps for him, I noticed that Sam's dinner jacket had leather lapels. It was a magical night. "

  9. A bit harsh BBW.. I've seen all the things you describe Al&Em but to be honest I've not seen many problems either - a park being a public space I kind of expect people to rub along. The dogs thing bother me more than most and I wouldn't shed many tears if the park started implementing some of it's own rules mind you..but none of it really mars my enjoyment of the place

  11. Whilst living in Exeter in the 90s I was woken up at 3am by police doing a raid on my flight, looking for someone with my name. Much "discussion" took place and when I showed my (Irish - lucky me) passport they were even more pleased. It was only when they saw the DoB they realised they had the wrong person. A few more clarifications later and their manner changed from cocky and aggresive to pissed-off and aggressive. I wasn't impressed

  13. To be slightly fair to motorists and Barnet, I have never been convinced by speedbumps. If nothing else, I wouldn't want to be a patient in the back of an ambulance going over those things But ultimately it is about human behaviour and changing the "there I was driving safely as you like down the road..." which is a statement that could be applied to the scene of any accident if you go back 30 seconds

  17. Not so sure I agree on the never part of this Torben. I predict that a 20mph zone will be xity wide in the not too distant future It will be amazing how many things will stop "coming out of nowhere" at 20mph as well..

  19. first mate - do you have anything to back that up whatsoever - or is it just a convenient peg to hang your bias on As Road fatalities continue to come down and down one report here is it any coincidence that it happens as road users protest ever louder about their rights and how they are being penalised? of course you would have to be a fool (and a communist) to make any link between the two, right?
  20. I'm not trying to take you anywhere Tony - you do like to "tease" a little sometimes.
  21. oh all right then, I'm being grumpy... hands up.. you got me etc etc It's Friday, have a beer and avoid the 185
  22. you brought up the colour thing, not me. And you gave the impression that you had seen the future and you know what colour it is. So don't go all coy on us now... Either you know and won't tell us or you don't know and it MIGHT be orange!
  23. So go on then Tone, spell it out - WHAT colour is the future?
  24. Why is it at this point I feel like referencing the Wire... Surely the point is that yes anyone can say "well i was poor and I made it out" but at a societal level we know that the odds increase dramatically against that happening. Some people will make it out but mathematically the systems in place mean that it's effectively a quota I don't want to be too bleeding heart about it and nor do I want to excuse any criminal behaviour - but if we are talking about root causes..
  25. Cassius - true, there will always be idiots driving at 60mph But it's amazing how so many "normal" drivers think they can classify their behaviour as different from the idiots... Whenever any law is changed or enacted, people say it will just affect the average Joe whilst the ciminals will get away with whatver they get away with . This ignores the fact that criminals will always exist and in many cases their behaviour is not part of the consideration. They are almost statistical outliers. Changing the "average" persons driving habits will have a far more profound affect.
