Are there only about 6 EDFers at work today?
SeanMacGabhann replied to mockney piers's topic in The Lounge
I'm doing my bit! Well... post wise. Not so much work wise -
I missed the..... exposures later in the evening as my posse required that I take them home about 1ish, but mostly concur with MrBen's report. Whilst not on a par with the first one a few years back I think I spent too much of the evening comparing the two events instead of just enjoying myself. In the end I had a ball As someone else noted it was expensive for what it was, but to my mind there aren't that many occassions where I get to dress up proper-like. An interesting mixture of people too - one chap in particular who appeared to be "inspired by" Russell Brand gave good value already, but when someone else related the next day that when this was put to him at about 3am, he replied "on a good day I get Jonny Depp, on a bad day David Dickinson" I hooted some more We got to spend time with birthday-boy Mike P who judging by the hour and demeanour of his subsequent posts enjoyed himself enormously. Lady MacGabhann got to have a proper boogie. Eva gave me more free fizzy drinks than I was permitted. The DJ was clearly nuts. I mean, what's not to like?? Oh and retiring at 1am did have the added advantage of me not suffering the fear the next day. Took my guests over to the Nuns Head for a spot of burger and chip therapy and it was clear that most of the staff hadn't seen bed at all - I wasn't sure if I was jealous or relieved

Hmmmm Ideally, we would have some kind of visual record. I'm thinking along the lines of a Tim Burton film where the camera is 200 feet in the air, Danny Elfman soundtrack playing, and you can see scores of people descending Barry and Friern Rd, scores more from East Dulwich Grove, Adys Rd etc, all looking like Oompah Loompas from this distance - before they all shrug a now-lifeless tress on the pyre Actually it sounds more like Farenheit 451 (the book) crossed with Lemmings (the game) when I put it like that but still I'm thinking about this too much - I'm aiming to hit the Rye at 8 and the pub as soon thereafter as possible
-
I was thinking of doing the same on Monday evening. Maybe a collective troup to the recycle station and thence to the Clock House for a restorative
-
Indeed indeed. But it's harder and harder (and I know you have spoken several times about this on here already) to stay excited about a game when you can see so much of what's heppening behind the curtains. And I only quoted the West Ham example as I read about it on the way in to work today but there is hardly a club around that isn't in the papers for similar reasons at some point or other Listening to 'Arry talking about how many games are being played each weak and how it means the cups (that traditionalists like him are supposed to be valuing against the indifference of all these bleedin' foreigners) get sacrificed because being relegated is too expensive. Now, getting relegated was never a good thing but unless my memory is failing, there was an assumption that teams could regroup and get back up (or if you were Palace, go up 4 seasons in a row and then down 4 seasons in a row). But money has warped the game so much (an embarssaingly clich?d line, I know I know) that you find yourself nodding along with Redknapp, before going "hang on a minute..."

Haven't you got enough to be worried about hmmmm?

I'm vouching for the loveliness of the Australians (and the OP of course) but I can't make this - have a good night to anyone who does go (nice of you to do an open invite as well strawbs - this was going to be the date of the forum drinks wasn't it? We'll see how many people are up for a drink after the last week!)

Thai Corner Cafe is BYO - on North Cross Rd

cheers MP - reading that article was the best use of my times so far this week. Many many cherishable quotes in there - Lawrence Wilkerson proved to be a favourite of mine - and even if there is an element of these guys pointing to the obvious targets and alleviating themselves of any responsibility it doesn't make it any less compelling. Or scary

When did naming pubs after the owner become A Bad Thing. Fairly standard practice where I'm from

oh lummee - please let's not start THAT argument all over again* Although I see the original poster on that thread removed their post... *Actually, I don't really mind if we do

Who Is Going To Get The "January Blues"???
SeanMacGabhann replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
And there was me thinking one of your '09 resolutions was to not just SAY you were coming to a drinks quids... One of my 08 resolutions was to not get quite so gut-churningly upset, just because of what 11 fellas in red and white do on a football pitch. Fortunately for me I largely managed that, because those fellas in red and white went on to be even more dissapointing this year. But the main reason to not get so gut-churningly upset was, quite apart from my own sanity, it didn't seem fair to inflict it on Lady Mac. So there it is. "Not getting upset makes other people happy" shocker. -
to the forum's pre-eminent paeleantologist .... Happy Birthday Michael!

Burglars Code Information
SeanMacGabhann replied to tiger ranks's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
but could that not equally be a mark left by a utility company? If the marks left are known generally to be burglar marks then the burglars are unlikely to use them I dunno - I'm not trying to shoot anything out of the water - it's just this story seems to a perennial in the media and never seems to coagulate into anything meaningful -
Burglars Code Information

It's not to have a pop tiger, more to reassure you. You read something, started worrying about it and then worried some more. I'm only suggesting it might be worrying unnecessarily -
Burglars Code Information
SeanMacGabhann replied to tiger ranks's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
These threads worry me for the simple reason that, under the guise of "trying to help people" all it does is probably stoke up lots of rumours and prejudices. Being burgled is horrible, it's happened to me and anyone who has lived with me subsequently has to put up with my cautiousness... but come on Let's say there definitely is a code and it's definitely being used by burglars. And you spot one outside your house. Now what? Are you going to ring the police? And tell them what? Are you going to double-check your security? Why aren't you doing that anyway? If you want to see how conversations like this develop Here's an example Another example -
EDF Drinks at The Phoenix this Friday 9th January
SeanMacGabhann replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
slightly more helpful to eliz I hope - The Phoenix is directly above Denmark Hill station. It used to be nigh-on the worst O'Neills pub I ever set foot in but the rebirth Exclaimation as another Mitchell & Butler pub similar to the Plough is pretty darn good I reckon Does anyone know if we have the balcony/mezzanine booked or if we are just finding a spot in there? -
I didn't ask Santa for that, but the blonde in question had arranged to meet me there .... :X ;-)
-
I'm surprised that post from January didn't get a response ed_pete. But the dedication on your part is admirable!

My wireless setup is faaar from optimised (it's an old Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange Livebox) but certainly for anything Wii related it's fine. I only use the browser on the Wii for iPlayer catchups - for general text browsing the resolutions is too small for my taste. Gaming-wise I haven't noticed any undue lag with the wireless connection When I need more robust speeds (streaming HD content to the 360 say) I tend to use wired connections - all else seems fine
-
Blimey EdOldie & chuff - sorry I didn't spot either of you. Then again it was packed in there, I was with family and I was looking for a gorgeous blonde so....
-
blimey AndyB - I'm surprised you have time for the forum after that lot I was convinced I would get at least one solid day of gaming over the Christmas break - I hardly had time to turn the thing on - was gutted

Any pubs open for lunch on New years day?
SeanMacGabhann replied to Indiana's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not sure if it's a happy coincidence or if recent steps have been taken but I reckon the food in the Bishop has seen a noticeable improvement of late - the spicy beef ribs for example are well good ( I'm not a first time poster so hopefully people will realise I have no connection with The Bishop!) -
Door knocking scammers again on St Aidan's?
SeanMacGabhann replied to Crystal Tips's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This scam has being doing the rounds for years - there was a loooong thread about them a year or so on the forum (I can't find it just now.. but trust me it's not new) Lot's of people have been fooled
