And something dreamy and romantic this morning Gavin Friday - Angel
-
Sean is indeed happy - nice one muttley Although I would suggest Northcross Rd is Greenwich Village
-
I have to thank Iain Banks for the whole whiskey thing. I had resisted for so many years, assuming Bells/Teachers were the yardstick But his book (just a book) Raw Spirit touring all the little distilleries was a revelation - I would recommend it to anyone even half-thinking of taking the plunge
-
Lester Freamon - The CitizenEd of Baltimore po-lice
-
Citizen - you need persuading because you think American = over-simplified or American = not close enough to home? Trust me, there is absolutely no concession to anything approaching a touchy-feely, American vibe about this whatsoever
-
Series 3 was meant to be the final one (althought the creator had sketched out 5 series, HBO were worried about ratings and the show's potential to illustrate some home truths - so there is a sense of closure around some issues. But the successful lobbying meant the final 2 series got made so hoorah! Now release them on DVD gits)
-
Laphroig for me!!! 14 year old if possible Had a lovely Talisker courtesy of Mockney quite recently and was very nice indeed
-
FX But I have the first 2 series on DVD for those who feel the urge (or will do when I get them back on loan)
-
>:D< - good shout blinder999 Which ep/series are you up to - I should be careful what I say
-
something about that Dan Le Sac track has always bothered me but encountering it again made me realise what: (it's not a deep thought so don't hold your breath) I get unduly worked up by how much I hate some of the bands on that list in "...just a band" but there is no denying that when you are young and get into music for the first time, it is the opposite of JUST a band. If you choose wisely you can have your world opened to a whole bunch of other influences from writers to films to philosophies. Which all in turn can lead to other things Of course you could choose unwisely, get into Simply Red and ossify for the next 60 years ;-)

Ok, so I have mentioned it ad nauseum at every available opportunity but now I know there is another fan on the forum, I'm starting a thread on this one First up - the why? [existing fans can skip towards end of this post to the section starting with *********** ] Now I KNOW it's just a TV show and I would normally not bother starting a thread on it But then again it isn't just a TV show. It isn't even what it looks like it is ("what... some kind of US cop show with lot's of drug dealers and I can't understand what anyone is saying") - yes it looks like that but if you still think that after series 1 then you have been watching something else I like my entertainment. Heroes, for example, is keping me royally amused at the moment. But The Wire is simply Not. Like. Any. Thing. Else Someone once said that having seen it, watching The Sopranos was like watching The Waltons The other downside is that some people think "Oh if you like The Wire you will like..... [insert some other show here - The Shield is a common one]" - which is nice of them but never right It's not episodic. Each series is like one big show. Comparing the show to a novel has been overdone but no less accurate for that. Many people will not make it past episode 2 at best. Having heard so much about it, it won't have sunk in yet and it will be dismissed as "meh" You will see characters you ignored, or despised, or loved all become so darn personal to you, you will wonder why other shows can't do this You will get to THAT scene in episode 4, series 1 and a) laugh b) realise why this is different It isn't about good guys or bad guys it's about all of us and the systems we have to operate in, be it in our personal lives or our work lives. And how no matter how bad things get, changing them is nigh on impossible (bleak message - funny show. A bit like life I guess) ************************** So if you HAVE seen it, who is a favourite character and why? Mine are currently Omar and StringBell. Omar because he is just the coolest person I've seen and Stringer because..... I have started to think "What would Stringer do?" in certain situations where I am stuck in life ( I know, sad)

Your selections have all been pretty good so far Bren - How about A House to put it all in?

Can't remember the exact page MM (it was a couple of years ago) , but I definitely went through the website and filled out a form You could try starting here and having a look around some of the links : https://securesite.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=276 -
Fair points Tom - I think it can be a bit like newspapers in August tho, the silly season and all that - Once the news stops being "new" and dries up, the space still needs filling! Living in ED is great but it's not like something happens every day - but we do our best

Good points Siduhe Having ordered a skip and requested that the (now remedied) pot-hole ridden Friern Rd be sorted I had very swift responses. Obviously the roadworks were already in the pipeline but someone took the time to reply and outline the strategy which, given the bad press councils get, I wasn't expecting Now a private company like (insert telecomms provider named after a vivid colour/fruit here) has been absolutely appalling for the last 4 weeks and is very clearly not interested in fixing a problem experienced by several of it's customers -

Re: Hooters Be advised there is also a Hooters airline, although I have not travelled with them. But the mind boggles -
This is going to be aces... roll on 21st

Jeremy - I wasn't trying to deny India's poverty (much less it's various religious strands and instances of gender inequality) But I would say it was an extremely suitable frame of reference, with so much money starting to be generated there, it's a society that can afford the infrastructure to reduce those numbers, and I fully expect it will. It just won't be because of 3000 year old belief systems David - as I understand it, even if you did get your hands on "scientific trials" with "double-blind tests" my understanding is they would be disbelieved by some people as not relevant. I know, I know....

India a third world country???? Have you not been keeping up with the news?

Agree that the 185 to Lewisham is tortuous - it takes a VERY round-the-houses route. I have trained it from Peckham to Lewisham and then changed before. Much quicker. Im in the Upper East Side too but tend to walk to Peckham Rye (unless, you know, a bus just HAPPENS by)
